Hey mate

I checked both of them out on a US website and the onlydifference I could find is that one version (KN-63-1099) is CARB exempt?? Not sure exactly what that means but some US states have strict emission etc. laws so it may have some thing to dowith that?? I have one of them on my ls1 (not sure which part no.) and it is ok. It has problems restricting hot air from the engine bay. Maybe look at a Kostecki system (same style, better design) or a Marranos one. Cost more but both are good systems.
Good luck

thanx for the info..

i was 'told' that the difference is the air filter that comes with the two kits and that the maf pipe is the same...

im not sure what way to go....definately not going SS inductions. I like the K&N coz its neat, looks good and will sound good (i want that hardcore injected V8 induction growl :P) but i have read about its heat problems. And also the illegality of this setup EPA wise in Vic. not sure if i want the headfuk IF i got pulled over?

I have considered OTR, but, not sure if i can really justify the cost. You have the OTR shroud, then the filter, then the mafless tune..all adds up i guess. And i dont think OTR looks as good. I am aware you can get MAF OTR kits ie from sureflow...but (and no offence to the sureflo people if they read this) I think their OTR shroud looks ugly..and Im not sure of the ease of extending the MAF plug to that position!!

The other option?? a STARR performance (or similar) cold air box and pod filter or just a replacement K&N panel filter...but im sure the cost of one of those boxes themselves would be as much as an OTR setup (less the tune)...

Out of curiosity...where in melb does mafless tunes and for roughly how much??

THanks ppl.

Chris,

Have no idea about the differences but basically anything but a Holden or HSV airbox is going to be illegal EPA wise because it won't have been through the full certification process. I doubt anyone would specifically give you a hard time from that point of view. However, be aware that in some states, good old Vic being one apparently it is illegal to have a non-enclosed unit like the Aircharger. I was thinking of putting a Kostecki on my VZ SS until I was told that being non-enclosed it was illegal here and I can imagine some police giving you a hard time about that as they can stick out like dog's balls.

I think G&D have an enclosed setup that gives good gains - they certainly do for VE. For tune prices see the sponsors eg. G&D, APS, Chevs in the south east and GM Motorsport if you are out Melton way. I believe MAF tunes are currently around the $900 mark typically and mafless about $1400 - $1500, though have never had a muffless tune so not 100% sure on that.

Thanks mate. The only open-pod style filter that is EPA legal in Vic is an oiled type...forget about non-oiled. Im not sure about pod filter enclosed in an airbox such as the STARR performance cold air box (which looks factory)... geez tuff life deciding what to do. If your price estimates are a close ball park, i dont really want to spend that much on mafless tune (tryin to buy a house!!)...so im kinda screwed :P

Chris.

Also trying to weigh up the possibilities of being pulled over and my car looked over by the cops. I went for years in my old car with a pod filter and never got looked at (was also lowered in 17" rims (on a suzuki swift!!, loud exhaust etc)...but not sure..too old now to be bothered :P

I was just reading through the EPA guidelines, it appears even a MAFless intake system is not EPA legal (in victoria anyway). The regulations prohibit the removal/disconnection of the airflow meter.

iv had both the air charger and otr (orrsom) and the otr seems a bit more lively, more so on cooler nights...the air charger has more induction noise though...you can always mod the air charger to seal a bit better...the maf pipe on the air charger is 3.5 inches too i believe, which is smaller than the hsv - if it were me, i would just keep saving and get the otr, even if you keep your maf....heres some pics:
