View Full Version : So.... VE SV6 or SS?

The answer is quite obvious ;) but has anyone got any constructive pro comments for the SV6?

Stunning car, and while I am very much attracted to that amazing V8, there is a fair price difference (looking at the 06 model runouts). How are the buckets on the SS, much better than the regular seats?

We're going hunting tomorrow, hoping to find a nice garage friend for the Munro :)

Cheers!

I've been in both the SS and SV6 and I can tell you there's almost no difference apart from the engine. Ride quality, smoothness, steering, it's all pretty much the same (excellent).

The SV6 is excellent and packs quite a punch for a stock V6, I'm very surprised with how quiet it is also, I can't hear my brother come home at night because it's that quiet. On takeoff the exhaust note is rather pretty too, and the car will still hold you back in your seat.

At the end of the day, all you need to ask yourself is do you need the extra power or not? The rest is all the same :yup:

Mate, you really cant go wrong with either car. I own an SS and at my 3k service, the dealer gave me their SV6 demo. I loved it. The V6 is very punchy, and the car is incredibly comfy. It lacks the outright grunt and noise of the V8, but everything else is just as good.

Dude, i test drove one right after the other. The SV6 and the SS-V are the same with comfort but the SS packs more punch. Once u drive the SS-V i didnt want to know about 6 cyls. I only wanted an 8. N i went to buy the 6 too! The 8 is jsut so damn good!

SV6 and SS are basically the same, bar the different engine/trans.
It's really down to three things...
Can you afford the purchase price of the dearer SS comfortably?
Can you afford the dearer running costs of the V8 SS (includes more costly insurance as well as fuel, and since you read a performance forum, the onset of "mod" disease...)?
Away from the rather predictable responses of a forum ("get the V8, you're not a man if you don't" type of answers..) do you really need a V8?
If you can justify the price and costs side of it, and feel you definitely want the V8, there's your answer!
But, as I always say, it is YOUR money, not some dude's that you don't know...

If you can afford to go for the V8. Guy I worked with had the SV6 and there was nothing in the fuel consumption difference. If anything he was using a tad more fuel than me. Maybe my mods helped with that. Who knows? You may have to pay a little more for insurance. Small price to pay for the extra grunt methinks.

Likely to be down to different driving styles. The Alloytec should always use at least a couple of litres per 100kms less fuel than the L98 in the same conditions.

Dunno. I drove mine like I stole it a lot. He seemed a very sedate person. Baby seat in back and all.

Im still shocked, I cannot tell the difference between the VE SS and SV6 until I see a badge, or I suppose rims. What are the physical differences if any?

For instance the VZ the SS had the guard flutes and different headlights, what do the VE have thats different out of curiosity?

The new VE range has thrown me out completely, I'm battling to tell the difference between models now which is odd for me, I can usually tell an SS or Calais or Berlina from some distance away but not VE :cussing:

If you can afford it (before and after purchase), get the SS, but make sure it has lots of airbags, the V8 will try a lot harder to kill you than the Alloytech.

The SS has twin exhaust tips and the 6Litre badge.

The L98 is an awesome motor with lots of potential I had a VZ sv6 and tbh It was a great car and performed very well for a NA 6cyl. The VE SS however is no comparison drive them both and make up your mind then.
If you are a bloke that like an 8 you will kick yourself for getting a 6

You'll be able to tell the VE's apart soon enough Matt, it just takes some time to get used to. The Calais, Calais V and Berlina are easy to distinguish, and the SSV is the one that you can spot out. You're right that the SS/SV6 are difficult to tell apart, as there's almost no difference apart from very small details.

If you think it's an SS, look for this- SS badging on the side + 6.0L badge below the flutes, quad pipes.

If you think it's an SV6, look for this- No badging on the side, V6 badge below flutes, SV6 badge on back, dual pipes.

From the front, you can't really tell the difference.. Which is good for the V6 owners, I guess.

Indeed... I was more after opinions of the car, not looking at the $ side of it.

And as for the "do you need a V8"..... well I already have one :D

Sounds like you know your answer before you even posted this thread up...
"Opinion" will give you an almost exclusively V8 answer on a V8 forum. Hmmm, wonder why???

Well I know there are a lot of satisfied SV6 owners, and it is a chunk of money that separates the two (basically 10K once you've fiddled with options).

My sensible side was saying "Don't need another V8, the 6 will be fine". I wasn't expecting to go drive them this morning, hence my thread yesterday :)

The VE SV6 goes as hard as a VR-VS-VT series 1 Clubsport 5 ltr.
That's another way of judging it's performance!!!
How times (and peoples expectations) change....

The other thing the SS has that the SV6 doesn't is a taller rear wing, although it might be hard to work out if it had the tall wing or the short wing if you didn't see them parked side by side.

I'm pretty sure it's the SSV that has a different wing to the SS + SV6, and the SS + SV6 wings are the same.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

You're wrong, consider yourself corrected :)

SS and SS V wings are the same, SV6 wing is lower.

Sv6 spolier is lower.
I test drove the SS and then the sv6 was looking at both. Suspension, drive, smoothness is identical.

I found the seats in the SS better and nicer looking they held you in alot more around corners.
I felt more comfortable with the sv6 auto gearbox than the ss auto gearbox.

I ended up going for the sv6 for a few reasons. I had a VY SV8 for about 3 years and loved it along with the mods.
However being recently married when it came to decide I went the sv6 due to a roughly $7K price difference in the end, lower fuel costs am running mine at around 12lt/100km only burb driving no highway, and also the insurance 4 the ss was about $500 to $600 more per annum plus sefvicing costs etc etc.

I cant complain about the sv6 i have, i love it all i can say is if you can afford the ss GO FOR IT. I think about not getting the v8 every day, maybe coz its always been in my blood.

If you are going to keep the car for a while and you can afford it as i said get it and enjoy it. One thing i can say is that you wont ever be able to use the power the ss has in normal suburban driving nor highway to an extent but its always nice to know you have it

EH! wrong!...

The sv6 doesnt have any v6 badge on it anywhere, infact the only badge it sports is a SV6 badge on its ass.

You can tell them apart from the pipes (twin for v6 quad for v8) and thats about it.. forget about lights tools like me change them :D

12 eddie? eeek.. im doing something wrong...

and actually rob not a good thing for a little red sticker holder, because the boys in blue cant read S V 6.. so they think its an ss, and try and get you for power to weight and a v8 lol.

Yeah we love our SV6 as well. Motor gets a bit raucous above 4000rpm and it doesn't want to know about any hills in 6th gear, but the handling, comfort, steering and fuel economy are all excellent for a car of this size.:)

Go the V8. The SV6 seats feel to flat and are easy to slide around in. The steering wheel is less sporty and more rounded so to me at least is a little less comfortable, and as others have said, the rear wing is lower. So actually is an excellent car.
If you go the SSV you can also get the colour coded dashes and trims! My fav!

But really if you do not want a V8, the SV6 should be enough. Especially if you option leather. Great car and power wise is very surprising.

I think by looking at the date of the thread (March) and Zombies rides he now has an automatic SS :D

SV6 = All show but no go. I drove one a few months ago. It's a nice car but I found the performance lacking. If you want to look good and are not all that concerned with performance then this is the car for you :).
