Here is the long awaited SUREFLO 3.5" single 'loud' mild steel catback audio recording #1.

This is the first of a series of recording using different microphones at different positions and instances to obtain the most realistic audio recording of the system possible.

A Dynamic microphone positioned approximately 2" from the exhaust tip is used in this first trial recording. It is loud, and driving under WOT 0-100 km/h, decelleration, WOT, stop then WOT 0-100 again.

As I stated, this is the test recording of this setup. I took a Decibel reading, and it read 82Db @ idle, and 122 Db@ 4800 rpm.

http://www.snapdrive.net/files/358948/Sureflo%203%20.5%20inch.mp3 (1.32 MB )

Please leave requests for some different driving, and my aim is as stated, to get the most realistic sound capture. This one sounds like a bloody Supercar, and I made the mistake of trying out SHELL 100! Never again. Crackles too much on deceleration.

Cheers guys,
Panelman

I believe moving he mic away from the tips to about 3 feet will increase the clarity.

Good job mate, that would have to be the clearest exhaust
recording I have hear
Now imagine that a whole lot louder and substantially deeper
and you are listening to the 3.5 with cam.

That sound file is great, I will put it on our website as well.

Well done and many thanks!!!

With the decibel test, did you do it at 500mm at a 45 degree angle to the tail pipe? That's the way EPA does it.

Cheers
Greg

Re Db test, ah, no. Didn't know what the spec was for testing, so I did it around 1 foot i think... can't remember really. That would explain the high reading. I'll redo tomorrow.

Thanks for the feedback, and as I said, this is the test recording, so more will followwith different mics and placements.

A recording with the mic near the driver's ear (and driver's window down) would give a good idea how it sounds from the driver's seat... or would the wind noise spoil it?

Sounds a lot different sitting in the captains chair than it does standing
outside as it sails past. I think I would rather know what others are
hearing than what I am hearing ;)

I already have the medium on my ute, I only suggested that so others could also get an idea what they will hear from the cockpit. I know for me it's windows down at every opportunity and stereo off. People ask me why I don't turn on the stereo any more... the best sound system around is my LS1 Sureflo.....

Works the other way too Greg. When you are sick of the sound of
your exhaust, the 3.5 medium allows you to wind up the window
and enjoy drone free Stereo ;)
