Hey all, Thinking about buying a new set of 20x8.5" wheels but have come accross a slight problem....
The tyres i was originally going to purchase were a KUMHO or NANGKANG but i found out they would have an inncorrect load rating for my car.
Corect Load Rating - 650kg Index 93 or Above.
KUMHO & NANGKANG Load Rating Tyres - 600kg Index 90.
After doing a bit more reaserch i have found a tyre call WANLI (225/30/20) Load Rating - 650kg Index - 95, But was told that they will rub quite alot.
Can anybody tell me what these tyres are like & What my other options are?
ANYONE WITH A SET OF 20" WHEELS ON A VT-VX CAN YOU PLEASE HELP ME ?

The Wanli 225s should fit without rubbing, ive seen them on a VU SS ute as low as mine with them and they didnt scrub....

Hi VXSS,
I have been running Wanli 225/35/20s on my Monaro for the past 15 months now. They have NEVER rubbed and I have never had a drama with them..touch wood! When they were new they squealed a bit (Hollywood style) when pushed hard but not so bad now. They are a harder tyre than the Bridgestones and as such don't grip as well but don;t wear fast either.
I know others have complained about their grip in the wet and yes when pushed in the wet they are slippery but I find most tyres are, however if driven at normal (safe for the wet ie slower than what you would in the dry) they are fine. Like I said, I have never had any probs and mine is a daily driver, albiet a low km one.
As I said, mine doesn't rub on the front suspension nor does it rub on the rear guard. If you are going the next series down again, 225/30/20s then you are in fact going down in rolling diameter from 235/40/18 by 2.2mm so the tyres will be slightly thinner and shorter than stock Monaro wheels so I can't see how they could possibly rub, unless your car is insanely low. My Monaro is lowered too and no rubbing issues.
As for width, the Wanli is a wide tread pattern and would be closer to the Bridgestone 235 than 225. When I sat the two next to each other the rolling wiodth appeared identical.
In the end I can say I am happy with the tyres especially for the price but 9/10 times you do get what you pay for so don't expect Pirelli/Michellin top of the range quality.
And yes the Wanlis are the only 225/20s that I know of that meet or exceed the load rating requirements of our cars.
There are some other brands, I think Dunlop that are made overseas that are 245/30/20s that meet the load rating but you would have to import them and it would get pricey I'd suggest. I can't recall the exact details.
Hope that helps.

I have Wanli 245/35/19's and noticed on the weekend both fronts have splits in the side walls...Rep has just been out and told me its due to under inflation and the have to run at 44psi or damage will result so make sure there allways pumped up.
So keep in mind 20" tyres at 44psi wont be a nice ride. They are shite in the wet and not bad in the dry.

had 235/35/20 and 245/35/20 on vy wagon, back rubbed with load and fe2. Maybe just bad offset tho.
Now have 19s in wanlis, I got no complaints about traction at all, in the wet the break but what wouldnt with over 300hp at the rears.

Are you allowed to fit a 225 tyre to an SS? Isn't there something in the law about fitting the same tyres as per factory recommendations?
I have wanli s-1099 20's on my vx ss and they seem fine and handle ok, havn't split or lost pressure in 12 months run them at 40 psi, they are legal as well as far as width and rolling diametre for vx model.

stay away from wobblies(wanli). they never balance properly and as mentioned before split nearly every time even when fully inflated to max pressure. also scary as in the wet when you are trying to merge onto a freeway and start to drift doing about 110km/h. not worth smashing your car to save a few bucks and not worth the hassle to get a dealer to try and replace them every couple of months because of factory faults.
just my 2 cents worth:teach:

Are you allowed to fit a 225 tyre to an SS? Isn't there something in the law about fitting the same tyres as per factory recommendations? pfft nah you dont worry about that until you get pulled over and defected ... so you can come here and whinge about being defected or fined for illegal rim and wheel size.
But yeh good point - double check when it comes to things like that because in some places it can be grounds for a defect and your walking home

Why anyone would want to sacrifice width for height is beyond me.
225 tyres = :limpy:

i tried fitting 20's on the rear of my VY SS today and they didnt fit. it was rubbing on the bumper not to mention guards needed lipping to :(
is raising the car the only way to fit 20's on a VY? my factory 18's dont touch at all with the height its at now.

I guess it depends on the rims and offsets. I personally wouldn't put em on a pre VE car as the profile will be too small and too rough a ride IMHO.
cheers

Totally agree mate the things have to work properly in the first instance.
