Read the description, it wasn't the pilots fault.

This is a Turbine Enstrom Helicopter on the Heli Pad of a Greenpeace ship some where off the coast of Ireland. One of the deck straps has not been released correctly, with what was very nearly disastrous consequence. Pilot skill and quick thinking saved the day.

well good on him then, still looked scary.

If you look closely at the video, it appears that the chopper wasn't still strapped down.

Watch the wave motion and it looks like as the ship crests the wave (ie. the ship is higher at the back than the front), the chopper has lifted off (on a forward angle because of the ship).

You're right, thats exactly what they were doing. They were taking the straps off so he could launch.

I think the pilot done a great job in getting it back down seeing as though he would have had no tail rotor control once the tail hit the deck (hence why it spun around so fast). Thats why in the RAN if we are launching a helo off the back of a ship we take the rear straps off the helicopters off first, so they (the pilot) still keep some sort of control over his cab. Still wouldn't have stopped this one I don't think but you get the idea.

How lucky is the poor bugger still on the platform when it takes off. Reckon he bought a lotto ticket after that. I have one of a european CT team on a hind that snaps its tail shaft on landing then sends it into a spin whilst one of the operators falls out and dodges the main rotor and the body of the bird.
Once my posts are up i'll chuck it on here.
