G'day folks,
Had a shocker of a night, tonight! and I'm worried my '04 VY exec's (auto) transmission has been damaged. I had to drive a bunch of drunks around, and one of the morons deliberately knocked it into park and reverse, 1, 2 while i was going about 60 k. I didn't hear any loud noises or clunks when he did it (was noisy in the car). After that I pulled over straight away to kick him out and the idiot did it again while the car was slowing down. He knocked it into park and then I heard this loud scraping/clicking before I slammed the brakes on. I've been testing it and all seems to be fine. I'm guessing the car was designed to cope with something like this.
Anyone know if this caused damaged?
Cheers,
Rob

Not recommended but a few times shouldnt be a problem. I know a couple of forum members that did it repeatedly in a hire car over a few days. All good (damn strong these Magna's although the brakes smoke pretty good when you hold em on at WOT) I know another forum member that snapped an input shaft in a crewman (adventura?) by putting it into reverse at 80k's with 5 ppl in the car, again, they had to do it a LOT for *cough* testing *cough* before they broke it.

If you put the car in Park on a slight incline with the handbrake off, the transmission should hold tha car still. There's a device called a "park pawl" in the tail end of the transmission which can be damaged by putting the car into Park while still moving. If the car can roll while in Park, then it will be damaged.
Other than that, they may have caused some premature clutch pack wear by selecting Reverse while travelling forward, but as VooDoo said, probably nothing too serious.
My advice: Don't ever offer to be designated driver again.

A drunk mate deliberately did this? :stupid: Drunk or not, I'd be making him foot the bill if there is any damage. I'd also never drive him anywhere again, including when he is sober.

Mate or not I'd be suprised he was able to see the gear selector through the tears and blood that would be streaming from his eyes and face if he did it in my car.

Drunk ? how bout a good round kick in the face ? drunk or not thats wat anyone would cop if they tried that in my car...as someone mentioned here,i would be making them pay for a new box as it would have done some damage that will arise in the future.

A mate's mate's mate actually. I don't even know the guy, but I can track him down and he will be paying for the check, and any damage done. Nope, wont be designated driver again for a while.
VooDoo and clixanup, thanks for passing your knowledge on it.
Cheers,
Rob.

I had mates like that when I was younger, that exact same thing happened a few times in my 202 Torana with a trimatic and never caused any problems.
A friend of my fathers used to be involved in testing the trimatics back in the 70's and they would slam it into reverse and park at 70mph without any problems.
Don't know how they test them these days but I wouldn't think this one off event will hurt it.

I have seen one of thoese videos. An old torana driver holding the foot flat while shifting from D to R and back.

In my brothers VY SS, when it was accidently bumped into R while in D the car switched itself off.

How do you "ACCIDENTLY" bump it into Reverse from Drive? The button on top of the shifter has to be depressed to move it to Reverse

It was being manually shifted, stupidity really.

Yeah , considering you dont need to push the selector button to get it to shift from 1->2->3->4 .. worst you would do is hit nuetral in that scenario :|
I remember a few years ago we took a Stato (whatever model Voodoo's is) out to Charleville. One morning we decided to take it down some dirt roads to check out the "handbrake assisted turning circle".
We found that it would almost always stall if left in drive, so we would speed up, change it into neutral, spin it and then slam it back onto drive and take-off again (all in one fluid movement).
I was part way through executing the above (for about the 20th time), when all of a sudden the steering went heavy. Somewhat confused I abandoned the turn and upon inspection found that I'd missed neutral and put it in reverse (at about 70ish). The engine had died, and the lack of power steering was what I had noticed.
After saying a small prayer, the car started and ran as normal. The realization of potentially being stuck 30k's out of Charleville with no mobile phone coverage and a broken transmission prevented any further testing.....

I think someone's been (drunk) playing around... and not saying the truth...
Once is an accident, twice is not....Maybe the driver did it himself, and now wants to know how much damaged he'e done. Just a thought, it wouldn't be the first time.

Well obviously I had the button pressed. :teach:
As C4B said the car just turned off and died.

When workin in for a hire car company me and a fellow cleaner would put it into P while driving to entertain ourselves with the funny noise. None of them ever broke.
Didn't do reverse but would grind the reverse gear in manuals, while on freeway to make other motorists laugh.
Dont ever buy ex rental. The staff treat them worse than the customers.
