Was just curious, why every 4 cylinder car with an exhaust 'upgrade' has to have a humongous stainless steel rear muffler that you could stick their head in?
Is there actually a proper reason for this? Or is it just to be loud/heard/seen? I've never seen an LS1 with one (God help me if I do) so am guessing that they do Jack S*it.

I believe they originated from Japan obviously on the more serious Turbo'd cars such as Skylines and so on that were highly modified. And then some knob put them on a stock standard little Honda Civic hatchback and the rest of the Race just followed thinking it looked cool and sounded like an 8 second R34 GTR Skyline.
Bunch of D1CKHEADS if you ask me, and everytime i see one i giggle to myself like a 2yr old in a lollie shop...

To answer your question, yes, to be 'loud/heard/seen'. Which actually makes it even funnier. Who'd want to drive one? I laugh and shake my head each time I pass someone driving with one on.

Best I have seen was a Hiace dropped on its guts with twin carbon fibre motorcycle slip-ons exiting before the rear wheels. Would have cost him at least 2k to get the horrid sound.

There is on some of them, the actual 4cyl and 6 cyl turbo performance cars (180SX, Silvia, Skylines etc)
They (the proper good ones) are designed for turbo cars, and if you hear one with then one without them they do sound a lot better. I've seen a few on VL turbo's and although they looked terrible hanging under a VL they were probably the best sounding RB30ETs ive heard to date.
Im guessing the non turbo brigade decided they must be cool and fully sick as well so on they went, may as well be factory fitment on Civics Lancers and Hyundais now

Whether they sound good is debateable - they sound like a stock exhaust with a straight through muffler on the back - loud but not nice on most cars.
They are not called fart-cannons for nothing :p

They have to have something BIG on their car to make up for the size of their engine! lol

So if they got a 1.3 litre engine with a 5" fart cannon.
1) How long does it take for the first bit of smoke to appear out the back when they first turn the key ?
(I calculated 7 minutes)
2) Where do they buy the 1" to 5" adaptor pipe ?? Bunnings do not stock them.
3) If the stainless steel fart cannon was to fall off or be trod on by a really clumsy person......would the car be a write-off ???? Technically the car would have just lost 75% of it's $ value in most cases.
4) Can the cannon be used for anything remotely useful ?????
Maybe if genius A was travelling to play nintendo at genius B's house he could utilise the thermal energy and inert properties within the stainless steel cannon to keep a dozen kebabs warm or to heat up some No47....peking duck with noodles and fried rice.

Ive got mates with GT-Rs running 4 even 5 inch exhausts all the way, and a cannon is the only option to slightly quieten them down, so there are proper uses for them lke i said!

WEAK. I thought they'd have to use at least a 7 inch to reduce that back pressure...

Anyone that thinks they actually "need" a 5 inch exhaust on a road car deserves whatever canaries and police attention come their way :teach:

I was just simply saying there is a purpose to "cannons"
Edit: Also if the turbo in use has a 5" exhaust housing what size piping do you propose they use?

Oh great, here we go, the kids want to get picky. Of course some V8 people will do it as well. Whatever...

This thread is all about ROAD CARS!!!!! Start from the beginning. I still stand by my claims that all you idiots on the roads every night (and most of the idiots in my area drive jap stuff) deserve whatever you get, so don't go crying to the forums about police when you get in trouble!

fair enough they may have a use but what in gods name are they good for on a Pulsar, Civic, Integra, Mirage etc etc.
if I ever have a kid who puts something like that on his car or one of the whooshie things I'll smack him out

So say there is a 1000rwhp single turbo supra for instance (GAS motorsport). with a turbo around the same size as on BLO 402 (maybe not quite as big). although hes still making around the same HP in your eyes hes a wanker cos he has a big exhaust and its not a V8??? I still hate cars like honda civics with big fart cans on them that dont go anywhere and sound shit. but there are some 200's and skylines and so on that run a 3" exhaust all the way through, that make good power and also sound good. what are they supposed to do? narrow the exhaust at the end so it doesnt look big??
planetdavo

3 inch is fine. Your bucket sized "wanker tips" are the main issue, along with ridiculously large pipe diameters that almost scrape the road.
I'm tired of this topic. People either agree, or disagree.

That's sought of true actually... There is a 200 down the road that sounds like a XU1 torana (never thought I would say that about a 4!) at idle and then has this insane sucking turbo noise when he gives it some. But it is one of only a few that I've heard that sound good. Some Skylines sound pretty sweet too.

how soon they forget.
B43Racing had a coffee tin exhaust years ago.
the older members will remember that.

Its a craze just like any other useless Mod some of the young one do to their cars, a few years back it was a Stereo, loud enough that it could be heard in Perth....then the 747 rear Wings + Neons, so on...UNFORUNATELY I have seen a VT LS 1 with Monaro Tail lights, chasers on the rear, a bodged up HSV Body kit and the front seats placed inn the back...Yes it's out there....

I drive an LS1 with twin 2.5" so its hardly like I give a shit.
I just laugh at them on Rancers, Rivics etc but I was just saying there are proper uses for them, like badnews said, what are people with huge single turbo supras etc meant to do, have 5" all the way then a 3" or smaller tip...?
Thats just as stupid as the dickheads with 2" pipes and 5" tip cannons on the Rancers or Rivics
