For all melbourne people!!
I got caught last nite for the second time at little river bridge near avalon airport. you must be thinking what an idiot who gets caught twice at the same location. I've actually gone around there to check where is the camera but still cant find it.
Must be hidden really well.
Just be careful if you going to drive around there (specially with the airshow coming this weekend)

Isn't the Little River bridge part of the time lapse speed camera system on the Geelong Rd ?

• Travelling to Geelong or beyond?
Westgate Freeway - Princes Highway - Operational.
1. Top of Westgate Bridge
2. Hoppers Crossing Overpass
3. Point Cook Overpass
4. Point Wilson Overpass
5. Little River Overpass
6. Corio
7. Norlane - (just before the waterslide)
Note: These are elapsed time trigger cameras, they estimate your average driving speed between checkpoints. So slowing down before each overpass will not fool them

Do they have these in Sydney yet?
That would suck big time.
safe-t-cam has been doing it for years from brssy to adelaide, in the heavy vehicle industry..... was rumoured to be put into effect for all veicles sometime last year

Safe-t-cam is still only trucks. NSW Gov was talking about messing around with an average speed camera for the pacific hwy a little while ago, dunno what ever happened to it.

its at the point wilson rd overpass and it looks straight at you as you drive through it... its not at the little river turnoff but it is still in little river. it is the overpass after the little river overpass.
i drive past it twice a week, have for 8 months and haven't been caught yet.

I don't think thats true because I haven't been done yet and I drive from Geelong to Melbourne and back every day.

I second that... Have been travelling Melbourne - Geelong well before they went in and no tickets yet.
Don't think they're the only cameras to watch out for... Have seen many a mobile speed camera set up right the way from Melbourne to Geelong.
How do you know you got done already? If you got done last night by a camera, they must be pretty efficient at getting the fines out???????

I think Topgear or 5th gear done a heap of tests with a number of products on the market and they all failed miserably.

Very probable (especially considering one site just seems to be a copy paste of the other). As a scientist I don't trust anything from the net. Certainly not allowed to use it for research. I find it hard to believe they have a computer that captures the plate of every single car that goes down that road, that in peak our would be a phenomenal amount of data, and then computes the average speed of every single car. Especially when citylink charges you an admin fee if you drive through without your e-tag because they have to check your plates.
Also if you get a speeding fine, don't you get to ask for a photo to prove you were speeding? There will be no photo of you actually speeding in this case.
I mean I could be completely wrong, but I have been driving up and down that road since the speed cameras have been up, nearly every day of the week, and nothing has happened.
And lastly, my mum has been fined for going about 108 on that road, and she got two separate fines from two separate cameras, from the same trip in one direction. Not for an average speed between them.
The government made it well known over the media that these camera's were becoming operational a while back....
Yeah, I know. I just don't believe they average every single cars speed.

Mythbusters recently re-did "beat the speed camera" which they also did a while back. This time round they tried all sorts of lenses that cover your number plates, trick numberplate covers and all the sprays and home made substances. They all failed miserably. However, one thing did work, and that was rotating plates

I actually did not realise they could be the elapsed time trigger.
Also I actually got done about 3 weeks ago but received the fine yesterday.
Am also wondering if anybody did manage to refute a speeding fine and got away with it. I never tried it.

Aren't they trialling these 'average speed' cameras on the F3 in Sydney?
Thought some sections of the Autobahns in Germany have these cameras installed. But people know how long it should take between the cameras - so fang their porsches etc and then pull over just before the last camera and wait.....

After some doing research about the company that makes these speed cameras. They are not 'elapsed time trigger' cameras, which is what I suspected. So there you go

those sprays dont work as the traffic people just play with the image till they can read your plates.

I hate the Little River speed camera. Pinged me at 109. Pooftas.
Although, after a nicely worded letter, I did escape with wallet and points intact.

I don't know if anyone else in melb has noticed over the last week or so but I reckon I have seen more Police out on the road in the last week than I have seen in 6 Months! Especially around town and S/E suburbs.. Lots of police on bikes too.. take it easy out there ;)

That's incorrect.
None of the cameras between Melbourne and Geelong are time-lapse cameras.
They only measure your speed as you pass over the sensors.
They often have mobile cameras on that road though.
There are 4 cameras in the direction of Geelong and 4 in the direction of Melbourne.
TO GEELONG:
* Soon after the West Gate bridge (soon before Western Ring Road turnoff) there is a set of cameras behind a big sign board.
* As you approach the Hoppers Crossing turnoff, there is a set of cameras behind the overpass (so you can't see them).
* Just before the BP there is a set of cameras facing the driver on an overpass.
* On the last overpass before you enter the 80km/h speed zone there is another set of cameras facing the driver.
FROM GEELONG:
* First overpass as you leave Geelong and it becomes 100km/h
* Just after the BP there is a set of cameras facing the driver, soon before the Werribee turnoff.
* As you approach the connection with the Hoppers Crossing exit, there is a set of cameras behind the overpass (so you can't see them) right before the 80km/h construction zone.
* Last set of cameras is behind the overpass again as you approach the West Gate Bridge.
None of those cameras are time-lapse cameras.

Paul. M's right about location.
-Millers Rd signage
-Forsythe Rd/Hoppers overpass
-Little River area near BP
There is something going on where you pass under the Western Ring Road on the Westgate freeway. There's a heap of temp radars setup on tripods on both sides of the road?

Im going to let you guys in on some of the technology these camera systems employ and won't enter into an argument over it.
A few years ago myself and a few drivers were given a presentation by a bloke contracted to the RTA . This guy helped calibrate the times between the sites and worked with the systems from their inception.
Firstly the system was designed by the CSIRO scientists and when they did it they knew that they would have 60k truckies trying to beat it.
They can record EVERY vehicles details that passes under the cameras. Once a vehicles details are stored, everytime the vehicle gets recorded the database gets updated with the new view of the vehicle. You could remove you number plates once your photo was taken and they could still identify your car/truck. The images are digital and every vehicle will look slightly different ie stone chip on guard, windscreen or front bar maybe. The placement of the rego label or even your etag holder's location will be enough for the computer to identify the vehicle. remember the database gets updated EVERY time a vehicle passes a camera.
I have seen this used in a few examples. One was a truck tailgating a car carrier to avoid his front plate being snapped but a tiny portion of his front guard was visible ,the computer scanned the guard and found 1 single stone chip and some red stripe and matched the offending truck . We were shown many examples of trucks snapped doing the wrong thing to avoid detection as well as some shots of radar detectors clearly visible on the dasboard of the trucks. One picture could even make out the cigs in a truckies pocket ut we could tell they were B%H but not sure if they were special filters or extra milds!!
Remember this is DIGITAL technology and as such can be processed in many ways at very high speeds. Their computer system would take but a few milliseconds to process each vehicles details.
Another thing also came out of it and that was the amount of cars that were unregistered. See the system in NSW can also do cars and it does at random times. During holiday periods you can often see them flash cars as well. The legislation isn't in place for them to prosecute car drivers for offences recorded but they still can record it. All they can do is send the unregistered vehicles owner a letter explaining that it was recorded driving whilst unregistered. This system spawned another system in use in NSW due to the high number of unregistered vehicles and posibley unlicensed drivers they recorded. The police photograph oncomming cars and the system brings up any relevent details for the police so they no weather to pull em in or not.
This system works and was designed by scientists with a view to making it foolproof so the offences recorded can't be defended in a court of law succesfully.
There was other stuff we were shown as well like the footage that is constantly recorded and monitored in RT. The footage was of trucks tailgating each other with lights off and driving in breakdown lanes and sometimes on the wrong side of the road.
At the end of the presentation we were gobsmacked , I have since tried to pass on what I learned there but find a lot of people still have their OWN ideas about the system as they heard some guy at a pub say his mates next door neighbour's sister dated a guy that overheard etc etc etc ...you get the picture.
cheers

There are safe-t-cam's setup a few k's south of the Mooney-Mooney bridge, but I'm unaware of any others on the F3 that could be used to calculate 'average speeds'.
Here is a map of them in NSW, but it looks a little old as the one near Wyong has been moved to Mooney-Mooney where the Heavy Vehicle checking station is.

Apart from the fact that you really wouldn't want to get done with this on your car... I have heard, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the camera processing units now reverse the polarity of all shots (so white = black etc) to render these "protection applications" useless...
I don't know if anyone else in melb has noticed over the last week or so but I reckon I have seen more Police out on the road in the last week than I have seen in 6 Months! Especially around town and S/E suburbs.. Lots of police on bikes too.. take it easy out there ;)
Yep, in my area too (East)... more unmarked than anything else, giving out canaries like they are lollipops in a doctors office... and they are generally all old sh!t-heaps that really shouldn't be on the road...
I think it's excellent myself... and really, in this day and age with speed detection devices so prevalent, if you do get done speeding, well, something's not getting through.

Too many road works. Everyone takes too long to get from Sydney to Coffs Harbour so the average speed is about 60km/h due to being stuck in road works
Of course, once the road works are complete, I imagine the monitoring cameras will be able to recoupe the highway upgrade costs back.

I must be missing something here. I haven't had any probs with speed cameras. I don't know, maybe it's because I don't speed? Hmmm, I may be on to something there......
