Question for the knowledgeable or those who work for Holden.

Rang my local dealer to enquire about the cost of 100k service on my sons VX supercharged commodore.

Quoted a standard price. I asked if that included changing the s/c oil as I think it was a handbook requirement at 100k.

The guy was very polite and informative and I think had previously worked on the floor (ie as a mechanic). He had never changed the s/c oil on any commodore and checked the service times and no allowance was provided for doing that part on the service. Also he didn't think GMH had the oil as a standard part.

Bottom line - as a mechanic he had never had to service a S/C unit and believed, being a sealed unit, it wasn't needed - but if I wanted to he it could be done (no doubt at extra cost). I suspect mine would not have been the first 100klm s/c commodore engine he would have come across.

So my question is - does the standard GMH s/c unit actually need an oil change or servicing?

There is a screw in plug in the main body of the supercharger, near where the snout attaches, that is used as an inspection and fill point. The fluid level must be checked when dead cold, and should be level with the bottom of the hole. It is usual for this level to drop over time, and is quite important to top up as required, to avoid s/c failure. You can buy a small bottle of the special oil from the parts counter. I am only aware of an actual fluid change if removing the s/c itself.
