Hey guys,
I have been looking in to gettng a set of extractors fitted to my VX SS. I went to an exhaust joint yesterday in melb (i wont say where), and they claimed that with VX SS S2 if u change the headers you have to put new cats on too because the standard setup wont allow for headers where the cats are positioned...or some crap like that...were they trying to upsell?
My girlfriend rang another place and they quoted just supply and fit extractors with nothing mentioned about cats. I looked under my car and I dont see any issues where the cats are positioned.
Anything I should really look out for?? Is it as straight forward as just fitting a set of extractors?? I have standard cats, but I have an aftermarket exhaust (not sure what sort it came with the car) from the cats back, well, theres about 30cm of stock pipe from the cats to the bigger bore pipe.
So im thinking just fit headers, keep stock cats, and replace 30cm section of smaller bore pipe to aftermarket exhaust...any1 see any problems with that??
Also, brands...HM Headers?? Genie?? Pacemaker?? AND, how will noise be affected, im after that real V8 sound :P
Thanks guys for your advice!!
Chris.
Ahhh...also...anyone have any rough prices for this kinda work around the outer east/south east melb??

Paid 1250 for hm stubbie 4into1 extractors with hiflow cats fitted.
I think pretty much everyone goes hiflows when fitting extractors, unless they open up the cats which isnt good....and illegal.
Just get the whole lot done, if u dont have the cash on hand its worth waiting for and doing properly.
Sound is deep.
I was quoted in melb also 850 to fit pacie tri y's and cut cats open for 850, not much of a price difference.
On the hm site my headers are 815 bux so I rekon with hiflows and all fitted not bad. Made a big difference to volume and sound on mine, I love it.

Dude, don't give bad advice. Opening up the cats is not illegal,
gutting the cats is illegal. Opening up the cats refers to removing
the squashed pipe for and aft of the stock cats and replacing it
with 2.5inch pipe or whatever matches your system. As far as
replacing the stock manifolds with extractors, unless your after
every last kw, the stock manifolds do no perform that badly, as
proven by the Sams performance header test, which was done
on an engine dyno. Do a search, you will be surprised ;)

Sorry mate but where does it state that if you open up the cats that its illegal????:werd: Are you baseing this on fact or is it just your Openion?
Just a bit of more info there are cats out there that have a metal honycombe instead of ceramic as standard now so ask around a bit and you may save yourself some $$.

to get back to your original post and question though I am extremly confirent that you can run extractors and keep the existing holden cats, it may require a little fabrication work, in the tune of fit extractors mark where they end cut standard system where extractors meet and either lop of the flange of the extractors (if they come with one) and fit over std pipes or weld on flange to standard pipes and bolt up. I do strongly suggest opening up the cats however. I remember reading a thread that once you open up the holden cats to flow as they are ment to that, after market cats arnt that much better in performance. (I am more then happy to be proven wrong regarding last statment)
So to answer your question no, you dont need new cats with extractors
note: I BELEIVE you may have issue with VY series 2 an newer as the cats sit on a 45degree angle at the bottom of the engine bay near the bell housing thus not allowing you to run say long 4into 1s extrators.

thanx mate..

I have a VX SS series 2, i had 4 into 1 pacemakers 1 3/4" extractors and and 2.5" twin system with installed but kept the standard cats, jst ahd them them opened up either side as Black346 has said, just involved removing th esqaushed pipe and replaceing it with a 2.5" or whatever either side
i am very happy with my exhaust, no probs whatsoever with keeping the standard cats, i think they are sh***ing you for sure mate
go the 1 3/4" paccies:D they sound good man!!
