Hi Guys,

I like my car pretty much stock, everyone keeps telling me how it has such a "Regal Look" about it. However have done a few minor things to it. Ditched the standard shockies and went to monro senatracs, and sports ryder springs. Have also got K&N high flow air filter in it, and upgraded the headlights to the statesman international projector type and of course did seldo's h9/h11 mod.

I was reading a few things and thinking about extractors. Now I'm not really after any change in exhaust note or anything like that (although it is very hard to hear that lovely burble when you cane it in a Caprice unless you have the windows down!), just thought i may get a little bit more power out of. So thought I would ask the question, is there any real gain in adding extractors and keeping the stock exhaust system? surely there most be some gain, no matter how small?

Has anyone else added extractors to stockie exhaust? Appreciate your feedback.

I think u might be wasting time mate, maybe change the cat back instead.
If u change headers and leave stock rear surely its still going to be choked.
Just go the whole pig, u know u want to!

Its all about letting the engine breath better to get better performance. If you put on the extractors it will still have a restriction in the exhuast system AFTER the extractors. If you can, do both. Just get a quieter but free'er flowing catback.

The restriction to noise and flow belongs, for the most part, in the stock cat-back exhaust system. A test was done many moons ago, by Sam, I think, which indicated that the stock cast-iron manifolds do a good job on stock or lightly modified cars.

Your best bet would be to buy a decent cat-back exhaust and get either a mail-order edit, or tune.

The car will sound much better - without being over the top - and the benefits of greater fuel economy and power will result.

There are plenty of threads in LS1 powertrain tech for you to trawl through about exhausts, modifications and preferred suppliers/manufacturers, so have a read through there and enjoy.

Cheers,

Macca

Thanks guys, appreciate the feedback. Any indication of how much $$$ we would be talking ballpark to go the whole hog with the exhaust system?

The prices vary a bit, so probably best to speak to a sponsor for a quote.

Cat-back systems range from $500 - $1500 dependent upon brand and mild or stainless steel.

Extractors/Headers range from $750 - $1300 fitted - again dependent upon material and type.

A tune - $500 for a mailbag, up to $1200 for mafless and many variations in between.

Good luck with it.

You will not increase your top end power due to the standard cat back , but you will increase bottom and midrange power and torque due to the scavanging efect the extractors will give you

So mce in other words you are saying if I do the headers without the rest of exhaust I may see some bottom and mid range torque improvements?

by fitting extractors in simple terms : when the oposing port fires it causes a vacuum in the previos port and draws around 10% more burnt gases from the Cylinder
which alows for a larger air/fuel charge to enter the Cylinder
so bigger BANG more power
