Hey all,

I am soon to come across to "the dark side" when I replace my XR6T with an SS-V in the next week or so.

I have some questions about how ipods work with the stereo....practical stuff. I have read some of the threads here on it but have some questions still.

1) My understanding is that I just need a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable to connect the ipod to the stereo. How long does the cable need to be? I envisage keeping my ipod in the centre console (with the lift up lid - ie so the ipod is out of sight unless I am playing with it) most of the time and the wire running from there to wherever the 3.5mm stereo input is on the car.

2) Where is the 3.5mm stereo input hole in the SS-V??!

3) Where is the 12v power outlet on the SS-V? Some commodores I have seen have it actually in that centre console thing I mention in #1....while may cars have it under the stereo in the centre of the dash?

3) I understand I may need to get a noise filter for the 3.5mm line....does everyone seem to need these or is it just some cars?

Any other hints or tips from people here with SS/SS-V's and ipods would be appreciated. I am going shopping tomorrow.

Thanks!

Richard

Sorry mate dunno about your iPod questions, but my VY Ute has the 12-V in the centre console.

Cheers,

I have been using the ipod in my SS-V from the start. I wish holden would give a option for the ipod to be connnected into the stereo direct and powered and managed by the stereo.

Answers to your questions:
1) Yes it is just a 3.5 mm to 3.5 mm lead. I went into a music instrument shop and just brought a 10 foot lead from a company called HOSA. I run the lead down along the right hand side (driver side) under the seat and up into the centre console. Sometime I rest it in one of the cup holders in the centre console area when I go on a longer trip.

2) The 3.5 mm input is on the stereo dash on the right hand side down around the bottom of the unit near the controllers for the air con.

3)12-V is in the centre console where you keep your CD's etc.

4) You don't need to get a noise filter for the 3.5mm line it works fine. I have the latest 80 gig ipod and I find it best to turn the volume up to full on the ipod and away you go.

Hope this answers your questions and welcome to real world you will love your SS-V.

The simplest method is to use a 3.5mm - 3.5mm stereo cable, however if you want to charge your ipod as well your best option is with an ipod car kit. Belkin, Monster Cable and Xtreme mac (amongst others) make these kits. I would recommend the Monster Cable iCarCharger as it offers a true line out where as the Belkin one has a mini amp built in. Both of these will also pause your ipod when you turn off the ignition.

if you go down the ipod car kit route you will probably need a noise filter as you will be able to hear alternator whine and electrical interference while the device is charging. I bought a filter from ebay called PAC SNI-1 which works a treat. Apparently you can also get something similar from Jaycar.

If you keep your ipod in the centre console you can easily run wires behind the trim all the way up to the 3.5mm input jack. Inside the centre console of the ssv there is a blanking plate where the luxury trim models have a courtesy lamp. I pulled it off and ran the wires through there and along the side.

I have gone through 3 of those FM things and they are all i piece of crap.

The 3.5 mm lead works great. You don't need to get any thing else just the lead and away you go. I got the HOSA lead and you don't need any noise filter either.

Or, companies like Alpine make head units will full ipod functionality. Even at around (i think) $299 you can get a basic head unit with an ipod dock plug. That means toss the ipod in the glovebox or console and whilst it's charging away, control everything via the head unit!

At least thats the option I"m considering in my SS. Simply the most elegant solution I think. I've been too tempted too many times to fiddle around with the ipod while I'm driving. Much easier to sort through songs and playlists using the steering wheel controls methinks.

my mate got a pioneer head unit the other day for $150 with the ipod adapter.
couldnt believe it when he told me...
back in the day, i paid $200 for the adapter alone on my $1000 alpine unit

I agree, Holden should of had this as a option for us on the new VE's.

I thought that the Alpine system can't work with the buttons on your steering wheel.

I will have to stay with my factory system as I have a SS-V.

Not sure the stereo's you talk of will even fit with the VE. 3.5 to 3.5 sound like the go.

no it doesnt, mine was a comment of general nature, not relevant directly to ve's. the 3.5mm to 3.5mm adapter is the way to go. wish my factory vx head unit had a 3.5mm input

There are 3rd party adaptors that can make this work via the remote control feature of the head unit I believe. Pretty sure I found out about them right here actually.

Also, not having been in a VE I'm curious as to why you cant use a 3rd party deck? Is the unit all integrated into the dash or something?

And yes, I wish my VX unit had a 3.5 in too, then i could save that money to go toward more important things like horsepower......

Mine works fine with the 3.5mm cable. Sound is good unless charging the ipod while using it then i get alternator whine. Might try Jaycar on the weekend for a filter.
The FM things are $%$# - cable is way to go on a VE - got mine from Jaycar - 1metre long is ok to run under the plastic cover up to the centre console.
