hey guys. i've been a reader here for a long time...
only joined the other day now i've finally bought myself an LS1 powered commoodore...
from a V6 Auto VS Ute...
to a V6 Manual VS III Ute...
into a LS1 Auto VY Maloo...
i tell ya what... what a swap!!!
this thing absolutely hammers. i know its not fast. not compared to some of your cars!!! but it really goes well compared to what i've been used to for the last few years. i'm not dissapointed at all about going with the auto either as i drive it to work each day in pretty heavy traffic so it suits my needs really well.
having been reading these forums for a long time i've seen just what can be done to these engines and i cannot wait to get some cash to throw a few basic bolt on mods at it at first then save big bikkies and do something silly with it.
i put the wheels on it off my old ute, and chucked some cheapy king springs in it just to sit it down a little... did have SSL's in the back but i couldn't get in my drive so i swapped to SL's... its a little high in the rear but i need the clearance unfortunately.
my plans so far are an exhaust and OTR from sureflo (seems like good stuff) and a mafless edit once all them bits arrive. yay. so hopefully that'll get a bit more power, and some better driveability and econnomy out of the big girl.
I've taken it down Kwinana once and had an absolute ball... supprised myself with how it went as i wasn't expecting it to do so well at all... don't know how my times compare to other standard Maloo's but i thought it was a bit of alright for my first go... there might be more in it yet i don't know.

07-04-2007, 03:54 PM
i don't know!!!
i had to rack up 10 posts, which i would have thought i'd done a lot sooner.
then i use photobucket to upload the pictures to and use the tag thingo's to make it work...
here are some photo's of the only modification i've done for performance on the car so far...
about all i noticed was some cripser throttle response on the highway and an increase in induction nose... don't care if it didn't make it faster cause it sounds heaps cooler in the tunnel now!!! the noise is addictive and i can't wait to get an OTRCAI on it and hear that, should be even more mental!!!
now there has been some discussion about this particular thing i've done to the car, originally the big round hole you see had a bung in it, and the plastic shield wasn't fitted. i opened the hole and put the sheild on which required a fair bit of cutting to make it fit and away we went...
some say the VY II Maloo should have had this hole already opened up but whatever is true i don't know... its done now!!!

hey thanks for the compliments guys!!!!
i'm in love, its a beautiful thing... can't wipe the smile off my face every time i drive it!!!
i ordered my exhaust from sureflo today also... can't complain about their service its been brilliant so far. Greg has been good with his advice and quick to answer any questions. Thanks!
i want to get it onto a dyno before i fit the exhaust to get a baseline figure...
then get a run done after the exhaust only to see any gains from one mod...
i'm interested to know what each mod one by one nets as a gain... there is no point doing 3 things and getting 20kw extra when two of those mods may have given a 30kw gain but one has taken it back 10kw... i guess you can never go backwards on these engines as everything is has been done hundreds of times before by hundreds of other people and tuners... but i'm just interested to see and learn more about the car and how its all working...
so, anybody know a shop with a dyno thats open saturdays in Perth??? or late any nights during the week???

He'll also be the one to guage accurately the gains you get from each mod. (His dyno doesnt bullshit, neither does he)
And if he is going to tune it that means he'l be dealing with it from start to finish..always a good thing in my book

Thanks Shane!!!
i took it to Dan today for a couple of runs and also a chat about the tune for the future and stuff.
he was very informative and happy for me to pick his brains for a bit... was good value anyway.
i'm very happy with the figures recorded so far...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/dwaynE2099/VY%20Maloo/DSCF4975.jpg
Dan did mention though that it was unusually lean in the top of the rev range... where they usually richen up a bit this sorta went stupid for some reason... possibly been played with by the previous owner? who knows. he did also state it was quite a good figure for an automatic car too.
anyway, i'm very happy with it and now i have a start point to build on!
i'm eagerly awaiting a delivery from sureflo now!!!

I didnt even know this site existed when I first got my ute!!:cussing:
Starting with Dan is what I would have done and I'am sure many others would have an will do!!
Headers, zorst, 3.9's, ripshift, clutch, cam, heads and mafless tune is what I'd do if I could do it again, in that order too I reckon.:)

update...........
Pacemaker Tri-Y's... Big cats... Twin 2.5" sureflo medium system... 4" dumpy tips... result = hell big grin... big strip improvements!!!
so yeah, the exhaust is on, finished, done, beautiful... the medium system is actually very quiet in the car with the windows up, but drop em down and listen to what comes out the back and its glorious!!! nice and loud where it counts - at the tail pipes...
took it to kwinana on wednesday and ran a new pb with every pass...
previous best was 13.89 @ 100
new pb set on the 9/5/07 at 9:44pm
ET: 13.513
MPH: 104.77
60': 2.191
so i'm bloody happy with that!!! was a great result for the night and i was super happy...
i ran the car as i drove it there, did nothing to it at all, even had my mcdonalds wrappers on the floor!!! left the 19" wheels on it and left them at 35psi i usually run, it ran faultless all night!
also, rang Dan at Chipmaster this afternoon, tuesday is booked for full custom mafless tune and OTRCAI... then wednesday night i'll be back down there for more WAW fun!!!

yes jez... rumour true!!!
tuned with OTR thanks to Dan at chipmaster...
am i a happy customer, well you could say YES!!!
its a new car... drives really well, black tracks into 2nd gear when giving it some, and shifts into 3rd like it should, instead of slurring into it...
all in all the exhaust, tune, and OTR picked up near enough to 30rwkw... so thats a pretty good result...
then there are the strip times!!!
13.89 stock... 13.513 with the zorst...
now a 13.102 @ 173kph with a 2.054 60' time...
all those times have been running the car as i drive it... 19" rims, full pressures, full weight... i can feel a 12 coming on this rubber, i think a set of diff gears will have it there easily!!!

thanks mate...
things didn't go too well today... the weather was way too hot, and we only had the track between 12 and 4pm due to it being privately hired... which is pretty much the hottest part of the day!
i had no idea heat could effect the car this much. it felt fast but seemed to be down 2 - 3mph consistantly over what its done in the past...
well not to worry thats racing for you.
i'm happy with how the new tyres went on the back, they gave some good grip considering they were just 2 days old... but didn't help me break any pb's in 60', et, or mph... anyway...
here's a brief run down of the times for the day...
13.152 @ 105.88... 2.077
13.266 @ 105.14... 2.163
13.279 @ 108.17... untimed 60' in this lane :vpo:
13.117 @ 106.01... 2.077
13.158 @ 105.51... 2.072
13.251 @ 105.26... 2.098
13.464 @ 108.30... untimed 60' in this lane :vpo:
13.268 @ 105.88... 2.164
13.259 @ ???.??... 2.139 - no trap speed on this run... no idea why?
the two runs with the untimed 60' were in the other lane... this particular lane ALWAYS seems to give off a higher mph reading with me having run well into the 110mph mark at times with this lane but getting shitty times??? i have a good idea that the trap speed thingo must surely be rooted.
but anyway - considering my next trip will be december 8th for a round meet i'm really happy with a few things:
consistant times... consistant mph's... consistant 60's... andddd i did 3x 0.4xx reaction times and a lot of 0.5xx also which is very important when running dial in racing which is how the round meets are done
the good thing about december 8th is with a bit of luck i'll get to race into the night.
between now and then i won't be changing anything and we'll see what happens then...
and after that its racing retirement for the big maloo until the next round of work is able to be done then back out to the track for more playing...
trans cooler, gears, and stall...
hopefully that should help things along a little!!!

Great looking ute mate i like it!
bit wierd how the power has worked compared to mine (VU SS m6) i started with 188kw stock then it got an OTR, full difilipo system with 3" cats and 2.5" twin system and Mafless tune...put down 236kw!
I will be heading out to the drags over the next couple of weeks...will see how my times go compared to yours!

03-11-2007, 09:30 PM
yeah... manual or auto, lots of differences hey... and different components used, different tuners, different states even!!! haha...
but anyway.
the ute racked up its 47th pass today... so on the 8th when i head back out again it'll crank up the big half century of 50 strip passes... WOW!
i know not many compared to some of you blokes... but i tell ya what this is GOOD FUN
just for the sport of it here are some random pictures from a ute show, and some at home...
NOTE: this is how she rides in street mode... coil overs at front wound down, and SSSL rear springs...

yeah craig it'd be awesome to get a look at the footage - or if you can just post it on youtube or something that'd be cool, i'd just like to see it!...
what have you noticed different?
something in the way the car's going or what??? or just the suspension and stuff?...
anyway, i'll be running on december 8th so i'm looking forwards to that for sure!!!
funny thing actually, randomly sitting there watching brownies VT super6 doing a skid at the line and once it took off i started talking to brownie, then it clicked "brown who is drivin your car!!!"... 'ohh mate just craig, seeing what he can get out of it'...

Mate what a beast i was struggling to control her , na was great fun LITTLE bit different to mine though! appreciated him letting me get a bit of the bug out though! Think Chris (gts) is going to transfer a couple of copies on to dvd will have to sort something out with one of them. Just noticed with the new suspension it seemed alot stiffer did not seem to transfer wait like she used to maybe try winding her up a bit imo, make a fair bit of difference in your traction and 60ft there for ET , i would believe seemed to be pretty loose changing in to second.. cheers.
TAKEITEZ
06-11-2007, 07:39 PM
yeah your right, i was playing with rear damper compression settings on the day... i did realise after a few runs the shocks are more suited to a sedan/wagon and are a little long in the body for the ute. they run out of bump travel and limit the squat in the rear end as i can stab it onto the bump just by giving it a squirt of the gas while holding the brake on
i'll be chucking the HSV shocks back in the rear for the drag's on the 8th as that should give more bump travel cause the koni's seem to bottom out... we'll see how that goes in combination with the koni front end...
as for the front:
the rebound travel in the front isn't anywhere near stock with approx 5" less drop available in the front end due to the shorter bodies of the front strut... on the street its awesome though... i think although it lifts the front a bit, it does't lift it as high as it would have with the stock setup in place...???
so i'm just wondering do i get the old springs put in the old front struts and do a complete suspension swap for the 8th or what... i am thinking it may just prove to be the perfect setup
CRAIG LS2 GD
07-11-2007, 03:10 PM
NA i would be leaning toward winding the front as high as it will go and put the soft stockers back in the rear so the car is already to transfer the second you jump on the gas, just as long as the front is'nt so stiff that it wont let it lift at all, but with the IRS and a softer set up in the rear i would be inclined to say it would, why you not running this week end??? should drop my slicks under it and see how you go for a night, with your now consistant reactions and good traction you could take the night out get some $$$ to go towards the next mod..go on do it ya know ya want to,, would definately give you a quicker et consistantly, did you end up changing diff gears ?? if not once again the slicks would drop the rolling diameter a fair bit and dont worry about your back breaks there are ways around it.. cheers:)

thanks for the comments VT Calais57 dude!!!...
craig i'm not running on the 10th because i'm flying out to WA that morning at 630 so i can't get any runs in... that sucks actually, i shoulda planned my holiday better... hehe
i might run at the street meet at the end of november but i can see the same probs as the tascommodores day with the daytime heat being no help to the times. unless we have a freakishly cold day?... who knows... but the practice would be valuable none the less with the december meet being just 2 weeks after. so we may give that one a crack anyway...
i haven't done the diff gears yet (money went on the suspension cause i had no luck getting the place i picked to return my calls and give me quotes so i thought stuff em)... for now i'm happy to persist on the stock gears, stock stall, and 19" road rubber and keep trying to back up that 12.999 with some more similar to it...
when i've done prolly 2x more passes in the high 12 second bracket it'll be time to start considering the gears and stall... a few runs on 19's will follow to see how things go like that then it'll be time to start thinking about where to head with the tyres...
i'm leaning toward a set of 17" drag radials... i don't like the idea of slicks too much just yet... but anyway...
i tried some 15" wheels on the beast a while back and they wouldn't turn at all they hit the caliper that hard... am i thinking i'd need a 5mm wheel spacer or something??? or do 15x7 cop wheels fit ok???

There are ways around the rears with out spending money specially if you have a hoist he he.. I dont think the heat should be affecting you to much if at all down here, it has never affected mine ,its run its quickest times at tassie nats and that was a hot day! any ways maybe on a stinking hot mainland day, we are pretty lucky down here i think street slicks should be your next bet because you may get a slower time even though you have done more mods , especially stall diff gears etc because the thing is struggling to hold on now stall will make it worse on streets imo, i still have a set or two of gears here your welcome to try, any ways have a good trip dont get up to too much naughtyness(just kidding DOit) cheers.

righto...
the big ute has been 'drag specked' for weeks now... after the street meet was canned i'm all geared up for the 8th!!!!!!
can't wait.
i've ditched all the koni stuff and its back to 100% stock suspension...
so it will be run as follows:
mafless tune and OTR with filter removed, Tri-y's with big cats and twin 2.5" full system... 19" road rubber all round...
stock suspension... stock stall... stock diff gears...
this might be the last round for a while while i rebuild that bloody bank ballance :(
here's hoping we do alright!!!

an update on the old uterus...
after 18 months of saying "yeah i'll do that one day" i've put in a trans cooler... the pwr kit found its home up front and i used the biggest core i could get, hopefully it serves me well and keeps the box alive for a while...
another bit of news...
after considering putting standard brakes on the back i found a set of 16" rims with MT Streets on them (255/50 R16) for sale on these forums... picked those up and hopefully they should be delivered to my place by the end of next week... all in anticipation for...................
Leathermans old 6k stall...
i've put an 8" diameter 6000rpm stall built by the converter shop into a unopened bolt on car... many are shaking their heads in disbelief... but i tell you - don't knock it till you try it! this thing is AMAZING... and i love it to bits...
also not this converter has NO LOCK UP...
i think only three or four people actually had faith in the converter when i said i'd bought it... leatherman swore by it, markone2 put me onto it, vx350int was just keen to lay tracks, and me, well i just wanted to go faster on the track.
early impressions make me think with the MT's i should be able to nail some very impressive new pb's... i'm not going to predict anything cause i don't wanna look like a willy but keep an eye out for it...
track times will be posted on September 14th (day after round one of our drag series)... and i really can't wait!!! going to be a whole lot of fun!
now some driving impressions of the stall for DD duties...
i don't use the maloo for my daily commute but for a bit of a test run i've been driving it a lot, done 200kms since thursday and this is what i've found...
for low speed town driving, creeping with the traffic, its actually nicer than the stock stall... you don't even need to use any throttle to start rolling, touch the gas and you'll get about 1500 or so rpm on board and you're away... about 20% throttle see's 2k on the dial and you'll keep up with any traffic out there... run up to 3k and you'll be keeping up even with the taxi's round here too... haha...
on the roll with flowing 50kph traffic the car will just putter along in 3rd gear (pwr button on) and sit on about 1800rpm just jiggin with the flow... it will flare if you try to accellerate too hard but its all good...
at 70kph in 4th on the flat revs sit happily on 1850... exactly where they were... you can drive along without even noticing it, and fuel consumption on the display stays right around the 10L/100 mark... no change...
hills at any speed are a little bit annoying... but maintaining 70kph on my way home from town only required one instance where revs rose to 3k... nothing too bad...
on the 110kph zone stuff you'll tootle along at 2500rpm (Same as before) on the flat ground... but this is where it gets fun... so you want to over take? just as before if i need to overtake quickly i'd pull back to 3 so the car didn't get stuck in 4th then kick back, then stand on it... instead of just pulling nicely from about 3500rpm, now we're really honking... 3rd gear roll... 110kph... mash it and you've got 5500rpm on board and sail past anything quicker than i've ever felt this car pull before... it feels UNREAL!!!
a 50kph roll in 2nd does the same thing... 5500rpm pulls up and you're out of town... a very slight chirp from the rear boots initially then its just gone... 50 - 110kph is an amazing feeling... beyond that = the 2-3 change... this one was pretty violent with the stock stall, would really shove you in the back on the track... but now revs drop from 6500 down to 5500 and it just keeps pulling... i haven't gone much quicker than that... but so far i'm might impressed!!!
Leatherman, markone2 - thankyou very much... you've turned me into a big stall lover... the track is calling... i've just gotta wait for the gates to open :) :) :) :) :)

Dwayne have to admit I was schocked when found out what you were doing but cudos to you for the research and listening to the guys pulling low numbers at the track.
How is it idling? Sounds like the brush tune you got has worked well. You'll have to get a socket fitted to the exhaust so we can do a wideband log for you.

yeah its a funny one hey...
but all in all it comes down to personal preference and what you will 'tolerate' in your car...
i just drove the thing to and from hobart - 500kms - a big round trip... and a big trip for something like this. with no lock-up you will see on the highway lots of flare... but only a couple of time's did the rev's go toward the 4k mark on the large hills... its ok...
fuel consumption has gone south in a big way... averaged 15.7L/100kms with a steady foot for both trips... (stock stall averaged about 11L/100kms)... so you can see instantly the lack of lock up effects it in a big way...
however - complaints about fuel consumption should never be made if you do things like this to your car... i did it, i now have to put up with it till i decide i want something else. but it doesn't worry me...
i can say i've driven a few stalled cars now...
VS, 355, TH350, 4000rpm stall... VT, 408 stroker, 3500rpm... VT, 222/224 in a 346, 3500rpm... VX, bolt on's, 4000rpm... VY, bolt on's, 6000rpm...
the first one was nice... the two VT's were under stalled... the VX goes unreal at the track doing low 1.6's in the 60 allllllll day and ran to a 12.3 down the track... and mine, not sure yet, but anticipating something good from it...
what i'm planning to do soon is get a camera mounted in the ute and go for a drive... just so people can get a 'feel' for what it is like to have such a thing in the car... you can't tell people properly what its like, or how it drives, and people can't be convinced either way that its great or shit house...
the best way to know for yourself sometimes is to get in the car and go for a blat... and i've found that after now 600kms in 3 days behind the wheel i really like it...
the tune does need work though.
the engine light is coming on when the lock-up tries to lock...
the shifts are lose with the power button OFF and don't feel nice...
the shifts at 2k are clunky with the pwr button on, but come good with more throttle...
boyley do we need the socket for the wide band?
or can we just go for a few laps around the place and do a 30 minute - 60 minute log of all kinds of driving to send that off without needing the wide band???
the tune itself is ok... its just box settings that need a fiddle now i believe...

Must admit dwayne i was a bit concerned about the 6k non lock up stall when i heard through the grape vine, i have never been in or driven a ls1 with non lock up, great news that it has worked out for you, QUOTE " the two VT's were under stalled " if your considering the only time you drove my car, i dont think you even got the stall to flare from memory :goodjob: as it was built very tight by the stall shop, as i did not want a loose stall with a heap of torque ie 408 cubes, not for what i wanted the car for anyways! if 4s and 5 s are slow 60ft times, with a flat 11, on a very safe/fat tune with a minimal low 20 degrees of timing then i stand corrected, each mod suits its purpose in my line of thinking eg big stall to get standard engine to come to life (YOUR PURPOSE), tight lock up stall to make alot of torque useable on street aswell as track which is what my car was intended for hence the gas for a later date for those sub 10 sec passes (OUR PURPOSE), has since changed as now heading in a different direction though, so hows about you keep your uneducated opinions to your self till you know facts!! (STRIKE TWO) all the best at the track hope to be there too see what she will do...

tonight the ute hits the streets again with boyley calling shotgun to do some logging... we'll be cruising round taking some data to send off when the computer goes away to be altered to suit the new combo... this should make it much easier for the tuner to sort out the shift pattern's...

there were a few silly bits in there due to the new converter, a few things do need fixing, but doing a big loop, with lots of varied driving conditions... stop - start, steady slow and highway speed stuff, a few launches and runs at WOT through 1 - 2 and into 3... and we got what we required to get a good picture of how its running.
i'm interested, we didn't check, but boyley see if you can find the 0 - 110kph squirt we gave it and work out a time for it? can you do that? i'm sure it can be done :)... yep...

craig your advice has been good to all of us. but as you know, some can't be told... your second hand parts have helped us too... (if only i had 2k for your heads)
i have mates with LS1's who are wanting to get some work done... they're getting told stupid things and fed some tastey BS by some workshops around here, and end up spending money and getting nothing... poor track times, poor performance, and poor road manners...
but, often they can't understand how a $500 mail order tune can be better than a $1000 custom dyno tune from a bloke who's only just got the gear to do it and is still learning his software, and the LS1 in general...
what we need down here is shops who are interested in development and tuning of LSX cars to go out and buy them... get them to the track and put on a show... prove to us (the consumer and potential customer) that they can make the numbers on the track, and the dyno, and the street...
i can't see that happening though... there actually aren't a lot of workshop backed cars in tassie at any motor sport events...
but for the meantime its all us at the strip playing...
testing our cars, working on our cars, learning from lessons others have gone through, trying things others have not tried, and working with tuners to best perfect our cars...
boyley and brett's logging help is priceless... and definitely speeds up the development and perfection of our chosen packages...
its a fun game we're in... and its just that, a game...

thanks very much mate... help and advice from yourself and mark has certainly aided the pursuit of some quick times... the stall is working great!
i've got 6 rounds and one private day to practice this season so hopefully the times can take another hit and fall a bit further...
do you think you could squeeze a high 11 out of this combo dwaynE?
jez, i can only dream!!!
it'd be nice to think it could be done. but i think that i'd need some serious extra work...
the 80mm tb and 25% udp will be on for round one... i think thats the limit of 'bolt-on' mods... well, it will be
i could then get some 90/10's for the front, get some new FE2 rear shocks, get some light weight front wheels and skinny tyres, pull the hard lid and tail gate and fuel cell cover off, get rid of the passanger seat and have a real crack...
there could be a very low 12 in it, or even the magical 11... but we'll just wait and see hey...
the whole season will be run bolt on, so the times could come down further yet :) :)...
keep an eye on this thread anyway!!!

i've impressed even myself with how quick it is... just reading through the back of any motoring magazine shows the kind of cars that can do 12.30's and there are some sexy bits of machinery out there that this beast can hose... admitingly i am using some special boots, but still, who cares about that...
there's more in it though, i just need some practice as its becoming more and more difficult now to get it all strung together for a good pass... so its now time to work on consistancy for a season...

nice UDP, i'm really regretting not throwing one on when i did my cam :vpo:. the belts aren't too bad to remember, you just put the flat part of the belt over the smooth pulleys and the cut part of the belt on the pulleys with the machined cuts in them ;)

she's going hard now, put on the 25% UDP today and i can't feel bugger all difference... but it looks sexy so who cares!!!
first i needed a 'belt-map' so i drew out this little plan to help me remember

here is the special fang-dangled puller i purchased to do the job... got it from bursons... wasn't cheap, but boy its good!!!

Hey Dwayne,
If you want to get some extra use of this tool let me know... I've been thinking about getting a UDP!
How long did it take if you don't mind me asking?
Which UDP did you buy and what was the cost?
Congrats on the times!
Looks like I'll have to get a cam to catch you.

with your driving maybe a little more than a cam hehehehehe j/k :stick:
Powerbond was the brand and you can get a complete kit from Tas Performance Warehouse for 385 landed (ask for Mr Miller)... or you could try your luck on Evilbay around 315....

Will keep you up to date, but i may have an extra day for you to practice on a mate of mine is having a private day that i go to most years he does not mind if i bring a couple of mates with me as its something for them to watch as most of them ride bikes so cars are something different to watch will let you know at this stage i think it is going to be on the 27th or 28th, will find out soon though. good thing is can have as many runs as we like just drive round and round good time to try different things eg 2nd gear launches, stalled, not stalled tyre pressures front runners etc etc etc.....

chris hooked me up with the kit... its not a bad bit of gear... recommend getting a new ballancer bolt from motors though when you do it...
but i'll do chris simmo's calais before tackling yours... i could do mine without removing the radiator hoses, but on the vx i'm not so sure, will have to try one first...
i took about 4 hours but i wasn't exactly in a hurry... its a nice job for an easy saturday morning...
as for catching me... you need - ahh hem:
25% UDP, 255/50R16 MT's, full stock FE2 suspension all round, your harrop diff cover, 4-1 extractors and big cats to go with the twin 3" system, rip shifter, OTR, valve springs, and pull that dirty great stereo out... see how you go with that :)
Will keep you up to date, but i may have an extra day for you to practice on a mate of mine is having a private day that i go to most years he does not mind if i bring a couple of mates with me........
that'd be good craig... its a short season so if its a date i can fit in you might have another runner... it'd be nice to get out on a quiet day when nobody else is around to get in a bunch of runs...
could be a perfect chance to bring some tools out and pull some weight off it

thanks mate :)...
i've got a private day and one round of the series to go before i have a real crack at the 11 second pass... hopefully my MT's will last that long though... there's prolly at least 25 passes to be done before our "round 3" which is where i hope to do it...
bit more practice and playing with the set-up over the next two meets should hopefully have it all come together nicely for the next go... can't wait...
i don't think anyone in tassie has cracked an unopened bolt-on NA 11 yet so i'll just have to keep trying till it happens i guess...

thought people might find this interesting...
was having a little argument with a guy down here about our track and the fact he believed that running at a 'round' meet you'd only be able to get 3 or 4 passes in... so i did up this list of EVERY time slip i've recieved whilst racing in tassie. :) hehe...

i was armed with a brand new set of 255/50R16 MT Streets and was all geared up to go!!!
got out there and after the drivers breif they called for a few street cars to come out to help dry the track... wtf?
someone had left the hose going that they use to water the burnout box and had well wetted both lanes down to the 60 foot point... bad form from the water boy there!
so we got off and racing and the ute felt great, but the high ambiant temp on the day wasn't feeling so good... add in the threat of rain, and the real muggy humid feeling we had and horsepower wasn't so great... trap speeds were down a bit with only one pass showing the signs of greatness that i've seen in the past (111mph speeds) the rest were 108's and 109's...
we had half an hour of solid rain half way through the day which caused a big delay... all the cars running treaded tyres were asked to come out and lap the track up and down, it took around half an hour for the clouds to pass, the sun to come out and the track to dry...
but the humidity hung around good and proper... anyway, i made it through a few rounds of eliminations and got beaten in the dial in system with my poorly set dial in vs a stinking old XD who set his dial in very well... running 12.38 on a 12.35 dial... even my better reaction time wasn't enough to counter for my poor 12.241 on a 12.10 dial... oh well, next time i'll set it a little more conservative...
i was anticipating the weather cooling quickly in the evening but it just didn't happen...
two shining lights for the day though - 1x 0.407 reaction - pb for that... and a number of good 1.6 sixty footers...
i went back through my time slip spread sheet and have found that out of 20 passes since i started racing with stall and dr's 17 of them have been in the 1.6's now... so thats great to see that its so consistant in the first part of the track :)...
i absolutely LOVE the launch this thing gets... it supprises a lot of people out at the track... and looking at the time slip data base here my 1.636 pb is pretty well up there and for a bolt-on car seems to be quite good...
here are the times for the day :)
ET @ mph... kmh... 60'... reaction
12.543 @ 108.04... 173.86... 1.83... 0.692

Awesome work dwayne it is a credit to the research and hands on work you have done to creating such an awesome bolt on monster, goes aswell as it looks too, it is always immaculate on or off the track...i was standing in the croud for one of your runs and there were a gropup of guys standing talking, i heard one of them say oh another stocker , i did not comment till you ran your time 12 xxx, when he turned back to his mate and said that must have an under bonnet charger on it, i said no bud you were rite the first time just a stocker with alot of research, tune, and bolt on mods no need for the charger for 12 s or even 11s (soon to come i bet), dont think they believed me but it just shows how impressive a thing it is...... cheers

always makes me smile to stand in the pits after a few runs and have people walking over with their heads full of questions...
they usually spend a few minutes looking under the bonnet and in the cabin for anything unusual... NOS or FI i think they're looking for, can't find either... if they hear it idling that usually throws them right off too with the stock camshaft allowing the most delightful idle...
then the questions about cam specs, capacity and head work start to flood in... stock stock stock...
the trap speed give's a clue as to whats done... basic bolt-on's only... this power level at full weight should run around 109 - 110mph in my opinion and it is what it does run quite often... there are cars out there running low 13's/high 12's at 110mph...
when people start asking questions about diff gears, stall size, tyre's and suspension set-up then you know they've got some sort of idea...
you don't run low 12's at low mph without low 60 footers...
i'd love to see an 11 second slip out of it... i think though there is going to have to be some freaky weather events, perfect track conditions and a touch more work on the set-up done to make that happen. perhaps even some logs taken and emailed off to the tuner for inspection...

Awsum ute mate and great times, are there any plans for n/a or a cam down the track?
TAKEITEZ
22-01-2009, 11:00 PM
well there is/was/might be plans for a cam or something down the track later...
i had a funny vision the other day... it made me think really hard about doing something a little different but i'm not sure...
i wouldn't mind doing a big cam. like a proper big cam... something like a GMM TK... but i'll reserve my final choice until i've done the cam in Chris's car (vx350int) which is going to be a TK... if it isn't a good thing i'll re-think...
one option i did consider today was the idea of a vortech blower... i have strange visions of the big stall and centrifugal blower working quite well together... getting full boost right on the stall speed and just hauling serious ass down the track... something made me think this could work but who knows...
its all money i don't have. so at the moment i'm just happy racing it as it is and playing with it as it is...
i've had the big stall in now for 5000kms... its loving life... i've reeled off now 45 passes since the converter went in... 30 of those have been off solid 1.6xx sixty foot times... and most of the passes have met my original goal of sub 12.50's with a bolt-on package on DR's...
so really its going well, i love it to bits, and i'm starting to get the hang of the package at the track. i still get a kick out of answering the "what cam has it got" question though :)...
here are a few photo's too just because there are...

oh yeah man!!! i love it... bit of a giant killer down here... its not quick by mainland standards with bolt on LS1's over there going into the mid 11's...
but with me doing all the work myself (apart the OTR and Mafless tune) i've had a lot of fun... a few mail order tune updates and a few bits of advice here and there... the rest has been done for fun and to try something that nobody had done down here...
Hey dwayne you look like you still getting wheel spin off the line here, would that get eliminated by using fulls slicks?
mates have said it lays about 1 meter of black lines off the line... i don't think a 1.636 sixty footer (and about 30 more close to it) can really be bettered... the traction is good... and i think the wheel spin is a good thing too...

another weekend of racing done... and another 11 passes onto the list :)
i ran two more 12.1xx passes which made my day... i ran the highest average trap speed of any meet i've ever done... i ran the highest number of 111mph passes i've ever done... i ran great sixty foot times for the day... i came second in eliminations and scored $80 for my troubles... nothing broke...
oh... and i clocked up my 150th pass in the Maloo :) what an achievement :)
anyway, here are the slips for the day:
ET @ MPH... KPH... Sixty foot time.
12.248 @ 110.57mph... 177.93kph... 1.665
12.317 @ 110.70mph... 178.14kph... 1.741
12.348 @ 110.16mph... 177.27kph... 1.741
12.177 @ 111.39mph... 179.25kph... 1.666
12.220 @ 111.39mph... 179.25kph... 1.673
12.254 @ 111.25mph... 179.02kph... 1.693
12.223 @ 105.39mph... 169.59kph... 1.682
12.244 @ 109.62mph... 176.40kph... x.xxx
12.227 @ 109.76mph... 179.63kph... x.xxx
12.173 @ 111.52mph... 179.46kph... 1.675
12.268 @ 110.02mph... 177.04kph... x.xxx
so thats that then... 150 bolt-on passes complete... what have i achieved to date?
1x broken 4L60E transmission... lasted 16x passes...
a pb of 12.136... and 12.157, 12.173, 12.175, 12.177, 12.197 to back it up...
29x 1.6xx sixty footers (out of 56 passes with big stall - 15 passes failed to time the 60')
42x sub 12.50 passes, this was my bolt-on goal (out of 56 passes with big stall)
would have loved to run a bolt-on 11 with it in full weight...
could maybe do it still with some more development, testing, and money spent... but i think some serious at the track logging and tuning is needed. and maybe some 4.11's and 90/10's... and i can't be bothered doing that as i have a cam sitting on the shelf looking at me...
so in the off season (between now and september) i'll be saving up to buy a few more nick nacks and then slipping a baby cam up the guts of it... just a nice little streetable one to go with the little stall ;)
still need to get some new valve springs, a few gaskets, a couple of bolts and sort out something with the tuning side of things too...
can't wait though... it'll be fun to see what it'll do cam-only :)

not only for your kind words, but also for the converter (which is awesome), and the advice from yourself and mark which has been very helpful in getting to these times...
like i said, there could be more in it... but i won't be trying for the bolt-on full weight 11 second pass...
guys are doing serious bolt-on 11's all around the country... but with stripped cars, special fuel, workshop assistance, sponsors, more track time and better tracks...
i'm just happy to rest it here knowing that myself a few mates did this all in the shed with what was a mail order tune and a bunch of parts all put on the car one at a time... testing the performance of each mod as i went along...
anyway... you once told me that the stall will flash to 6k, i just needed more power... so now i'll work on that...
hopefully this camshaft works...............

have a set of pushrods down in the shed which i will be using...
now i need to organise a set of valve springs and figure out who is going to tune this beast... little difficult in tassie though with nobody in launceston (i believe) decent enough to help me achieve good results out of the package...
so some for of "mail-order" style tuning will have to be carried out... not to worry though, i'm sure i will figure something out...
might have to get a copy of efi live for some log-and-tune-via-the-interwebs work...

Dwayne I am going away tomorrow for work mate I'll be doing a 3 week on 1 week off roster so the dates you quote are not suitable.
But I have an idea you can have the original discs off the ute as I replace them (front ones ready to go) and then you can even borrow my calipers/brackets etc. Also I reckon you just need champys front runners and your in business.

so...
I never managed to run a bolt-on 11 second pass.......
12.136 and a few other 12.1's remained the pb... not bad though for a full weight auto car on 16" DR's with only basic bolt-on mods...
we recieved bad news that the Tarmac dragway (our track) wouldn't be opening for a season 09/10 but that there was a local club who'd hired the track for november 1st... this made me think "i can race then, but i want a new pb"...
that made me think "i have that cam and everything sitting in the bedroom... let's put that in"
so after boyleys ute was clear of the hoist i launched into my own.
the plan was to remove the gearbox and all that stuff...
then remove the engine and do the cam out of the car...
reason being -
the installation of the Turbo Killer cam will require the revs to see 7000rpm and possibly a touch north... i've hit 7k a few times, but with 60,000kms on the motor now i don't want to go for 7500rpm and have something let go...
so the motor is out, it's on the engine stand and i'm going to strip it down and chuck a set of ARP rod bolts in it (have got)... i'm also replacing the timing chain with the double row one pictured above, so this will make putting the bottom gear on so much easier :)
and the plus also is that i can turn the motor on it's head and i won't have to worry about lifters falling into the cam tunnel... so it's all good...
all in all at home it took me about 4 hours to get ready for the engine out - that involved removing all the exhaust, tail shaft, everything that clipped on, wired on, bolted on...
then last night with the help of Craig, Boyley and Ricky from work we lifted the gearbox out...
then we got the engine out of the big girl and onto the stand :)
here are a couple of progress shots!!!!!!!!!!!!
the exhaust on the ground... don't worry about the big 3" straight bit of pipe, that's off dad's hilux (sounded like shit, did nothing)

cam is in... dialed it in tonight... called phonsey at GMM to find out where it needed to be...
dot to dot install with rollmaster had ICL @ 116... wanted 112... got that after a few attempts... so as you can imagine, a 'simple' dot to dot install with a stock chain would be asking for trouble on a cam this big... especially in an L98!...
also did the rod bolts last night... they were nice things...
so as the engine sits now the rocker covers are sitting on it and the timing cover is in place... just to keep the dust out...
i'm not touching it wednesday, thursday i'm going to hobart... till sunday... but monday we're back into it...
valve springs and push rods to go... plus final assmebly...
tomorrow i need to order some seals and gaskets...
i need a crank seal and especially a rear main as that was leaking a fair bit in the last 6 months or so...
all is going well :)
friday next week is engine re-install date... saturday next week should, all going well, be first fire in the belly...
i'm expecting mass rattle for a few minutes till the lifters get some oil in them but that's ok...
pics :)
stock front end and timing chain... stained a bit and a crappy single row chain that had stretched a shit load...

yeah ben no stuffing around here...
you can take credit for the fact i bought this car... after riding in the old LS1UTE a few times i couldn't NOT buy an LS1 powered car...
after you set the track times you did back in the day i had a goal to beat, a goal i reached, broke, and smashed...
granted, tuning, mods, knowledge and fuel has come a long way since you were running mid 12's back in the day... but i always said "i want to beat that car"...
well now it's going the NA Cam-Only route, you can probably take credit for that too... the old 230/230 you had in the VU was tough, cranky, and awesome...
so i had to get me something big and cranky too...
when the Turbo Killer (237/242) came up at a good price it wasn't worth going past :)...
anyway...
so in almost 3 years the ute has come a long way...
it has been a slow journey, but one where i've learnt a lot about the car, the series, and what makes them tick... i'm still learning, and it's still great fun doing all this work on it :)
one thing hasn't changed in 3 years though..................... the RHF door speaker is still blown... was blown the day i got it, and still doesn't work ;)
i've loved doing things bit by bit as i had spare money and time, and it's been rewarding doing it this way too...
the only mods i haven't done myself is the Mafless tune, and the setup of the diff... every other part has been installed by myself and a few mates who have always been willing to help me out when i have needed it...
next week i am finishing the engine off and slipping it back in over the weekend...
working on the tune with boyley for a week or two following that... i'm excited to see what it's like...
the idle should be something else!!! the top end should be pretty good too!!! and the stall will finally match the motor :)
i will have to find you and give you a ride in the thing when it's all together and tuned... i'll be at the tascommodores private day on november 1st too if you come out :)
bring your skid lid, maybe you can have a drive... get the taste back and hurry your project along a bit :) haha...

Haha, can't believe you still haven't fixed that mate, would drive me mental! If I ever upgrade mine again I think I'll have to drop my old splits in the mail and send em your way:jester:

yeah no worries with the speaker mate... i only listen to the radio, sometimes a CD gets a spin, but most of the time it's just the good old 'wireless'... and most of those times, it's the local ABC radio!!! haha... love it...
anyway, fuel system...
ummmmmmmmmmm.... yeah i reckon i'll have to do something with that down the line...
i will get a surge tank and what not in the fuel cell area... might upgrade the injectors and rails too...
i know it'll need doing, it just don't know when... hopefully not at this stage... but we'll see what happens with it during tuning...

perfect addition to the engine bay. just to jazz things up a little...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/dwaynE2099/VY%20Maloo/DSCF5787.jpg
new timing cover gasket and crank pulley seal was fitted...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/dwaynE2099/VY%20Maloo/DSCF5790.jpg
pulled the ballancer on with my special tool... bit of M16 threaded rod cut to length and a nut and two washers... pull it in and get it seated........
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/dwaynE2099/VY%20Maloo/DSCF5792.jpg
replaced the crank bolt with some overkill and a boot load of loctite... beautiful bolt, looks too nice to put in the engine... it'd want to be beautiful though for about $70USD
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/dwaynE2099/VY%20Maloo/DSCF5793.jpg
also did the rear main while it was out... and the gasket behind the cover too... thought it worth doing because it was leaking and i would rather do it now than later on when it got worse... ..... which it would have
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/dwaynE2099/VY%20Maloo/DSCF5800.jpg
seal even has instructions... makes me wonder if people put these in backwards?
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v466/dwaynE2099/VY%20Maloo/DSCF5799.jpg
then after i'd had dinner craig came around to help... we went to get the engine crane and in it went... mostly trouble free so far :)

rosey, having the engine out of the car has made this whole process SO much simpler...
i would say that the removal and installation of the engine would take me about 10 hours total... but it's the first time i've done one so i took a while to get my head around it, and removed the box first because i thought it would be easier...
but, spending 10 hours doing it has also saved me some time... not 10 hours... no way...
but what it has saved is a lot of stress and struggling working around an engine bay...
and also possible damage to the guards from leaning over...
valve springs take me about 4 to 5 hours start to finish in the car... i've done a few sets now... but it hurts the back and it can be a pain to do the two rear cylinders... especially on VE's!!
even if i weren't doing rod bolts i would have pulled the engine... the timing chain makes that almost a requirement too... i found it very difficult to get the oil pump pick-up on properly when i'd spaced the pump out... i'm supprised people are happy to do this in the car as it took a great deal of stretching...
enough that i'd be worried about getting the pick-up O-ring seated properly...
if you took the sump completely off though you'd be right... but i think that's a fair contract in itself when the engine is in the car... it looks like it would require a bit of messing around...
i'm excited to get it going though... can't wait...
hopefully everything has worked out and it'll hold together and make enough power to run the times i'm chasing...
low 11's would be awesome!!!
but i'll just aim for an 11 first up and see where it goes from there :)

it won't idle by itself without cracking the throttle, but i expected that with the bolt-on tune... i was actually surprised it even started.

Lookin good Dwayne - what sort of guage is that on the dash?
Thanks very much :)
the guage is an Innovate DB guage... hooked into an LC-1 wideband... here is a link to it... it blacks out completely when it's not powered up, and also dims when the headlights are on...
i put it up there because that bit of plastic is pretty cheap to replace...
it's also in line of sight...
and the HSV guage pods are too expensive and won't fit a 2" guage...
and all the aftermarket ones look cheap and nasty, so i thought instead of spending $150 on a cheap and nasty plastic guage pod and then having an empty hole, i'd just spend $30 on a matt black guage cup and stick it there anyway...

OK...
a days racing has been and gone...
i ran 11 times... most of them were garbage...
had some issues getting off the line mainly. car ran strong, even in the heat of the day when i was seeing 65 degree inlet temps on the line..... a quick re-wire of the IAT sensor saw the car perform much better... and i mean much better!!!
ran a new pb of 11.735 off a 1.573 sixty (no trap speed recorded due to track system malfunction)
backed with a 11.822 off a pretty lazy 1.657...
not half bad for a fat cam-only car on drag radials...

yeah bit more practice, bit more grip on a better track, and a little more work on the tune and it'll waltz merrily into the 11.5's :)
well, that's the plan anyway!!!
gotta thank you for all your help in the shed, a few late nights getting it going. but it all came together in the end and with a swift kick up the backside from yourself i got my act together on the line and it all came together for two passes :)

yeah pretty stoked to get into the final... brian wasn't impressed that i dialed in outside of class...
bugger it though, he's just jelous that i drove there, changed the back tyres, ran 0.1 seconds quicker than he ever has, changed the tyres again, drove home, did a few laps of town, took craig home, and drove it to church the next day!
i don't think you could do that in a banging old XW with bits of engine out the bonnet, slicks, front runners, no interior, no exhaust and plastic windows!
11.7 first day out is a great effort. :goodjob:

yeah thanks mate... i was very happy with how it went considering it was the first time i'd raced since April and the first time i'd driven the new package in anger...
the tune has had work since the cam went in... Oztrack is helping with the tune remotely. i don't feel confident enough to trust anyone locally (in launceston), and don't want to drive to the other end of the state for tuning... so with Craig and Rob's V2's and what not we've been working with Steve to build the tune up...
there's plenty more to be gained yet... the car felt very strong in the top end of the rev range so we'll make it hold the gears a bit longer... i've had it to 7490rpm and it pulled hard all the way there, so the mission is to get it grabbing gears as close to that point as possible... that should take plenty of time out of the ET and possibly even a touch off the 60' mark...
as for the low 11... i'm going to be running this engine combo for the entire season... i don't want to change anything till i've exhausted the set-up power wise...
i'd like to see sub 11.50's cam-only... i'm sure it'll do that no worries... just need to work on the 60' a bit more, get that down into the low 1.5's on a more regular basis and we'll be set. the rest sort of follows on from there by itself...
the end goal for the car is consistant 11.1's - 11.2's... that'll put me smack in the middle of our local "super sedan" field which has a 10.00 - 12.00 bracket... it's dial in racing and if i can get it doing the times i want pass after pass i'll be very happy :)
10's would be good. but i don't want to de-street a street car :)
oh, point of interest also... economy is better than pre-cam... no joke!

so then. update.
since that last post what has happened?
well, at the drags that day i had a mystery coolant loss. we're talking 300 - 500ml per pass... it took a while for the loss to become evident and on christmas eve i figured out it had destroyed a left hand side head gasket...
under a 15psi pressure test it would drop 10psi in about 2 or 3 minutes and spray water out the side of the head gasket like mad!
so i got a set of genuine GM head gaskets, exhaust manifold gaskets, inlet manifold gaskets and a 160* thermostat...
i did a strip down, found the buggered shitty head gasket, cleaned it all up, smashed it back together in 2 nights after work...
it's been going faultless since, running well with no coolant loss. quiet as a mouse (well, up front, not the 100db idle though) and pulling nicely...
raced it on saturday just gone. had some traction drama's early on in the day. my MT's had gone down to 15psi and i didn't know. check them, raised to 20psi but still only managed a few 1.6 sixty's...
nothing like the previous rounds 1.573 but close enough... didn't beat the previous rounds 11.735 either but the difference in inlet temps read on the computer was 19 degrees last time, and between 34 and 26 this time... plus 99kpa last time and between 96 - 98kpa this time which is also a difference...
here are the slips for the day:
ET @ mph... kph... 60' - reaction time:
12.428 @ 114.50... 184.25... 1.999 - 1.123
12.099 @ 114.50... 184.25... 1.815 - 0.860

12.430 @ 114.50... 184.25... 2.055 - 0.701
12.288 @ 114.65... 184.49... 1.919 - 0.830
12.209 @ 113.92... 183.32... 1.863 - 0.809
11.839 @ 115.38... 185.67... 1.681 - 0.627
11.804 @ 115.53... 185.91... 1.658 - 0.620 - round PB
12.131 @ 114.80... 184.74... 1.805 - 0.668
11.929 @ 102.86... 165.52... 1.673 - 0.634
11.876 @ 114.07... 183.56... X.XXX - 0.429
that brings the total to date to 162 passes...
it went well considering the weather and traction problems... the trap speed is reasonable. not blistering really but good enough. i just need to get these 60' times back down into the 1.5's where i hit them last meet...
i'm not going to change anything for next round. my drag radials are about shagged. all the lines are gone and i'm not sure how they'll go, and i'm also not sure if i should stick with them or put on stock brakes and go for some slicks and front runners...
i just want to figure this out and get it back to a point where i can run within a tenth pass after pass after pass...
i did win the super sedan dial in bracket racing class for the night though (10.00 - 11.99) so i was stoked with that :) :)

11.725 @ 115.83 off a 1.681 sixty footer...
changes from last time:
ran weld pro-stars (15x4 and 15x8) with MT slicks... 26x8.5"... and MT fronts...
the slicks did not convert to faster sixty foot times, gave bucket loads of wheel spin, poor sixty foot times, a real lose feeling off the line...
they were quite old, may have gone off... but for the effort of changing the brakes and what not, and changing front and rear tyres at the track, i think i will go back to drag radials...
i ran a 1.573 sixty on drag radials the first time i ran with the new cam so i think they're ok... plus, that set was 60 passes and 2 years old at the time.......... so i think i'll get another set....
15's or 16's though...
might run the 255/50R16 again if i can find a set...
here are all the times from the round of tassienats:

yeah i wasn't happy with the slicks...
it wasn't the track either as there were plenty of cars running some very fast 60' times... set-up drag cars though, but they weren't complaining about lack of traction...
a new set of boots will be on the menu for next time i go racing... but that'll have to wait till next season now...
i'll be going for drag radials again though. i liked them last time, they worked well and i got 62 passes out of my last set... i don't know how that compares with what others are getting? but i was fairly happy with it...

so...
i thought yesterday was gonna be a blinder...
track looked good, they were laying VHT down when i arrived...
at the drivers brief they asked if the super sedan guys (10.00 - 11.99) wanted to run first to test the track so i shouted YES!
lined up, first car in the line. was going to be the first car to run for the day...
Track official comes over and goes "son i think you're in the wrong class"
I replied "no, you called super sedan didn't you?"
he says "yes, what times does this thing run?"
I said "it'll do 11.7's all day if you guys have done the right thing with the track"
He replied "what have you done to it?"
I said "not much, it's just a stock 5.7 with a big cam and a big stall and short diff gear, nothing special"
He said "11's hey... ok well, you're in line now"
I replied "ok, watch this"
Nice skid...
Lined up...
BAM!
left the line hard, good launch...
time:
11.745 @ 116.13mph off a 1.655 sixty footer
There you go Track official... I CAN be in this class...
waited an hour and 20 minutes for another go...
lined up... same thing, nice skid, nice stage...
Off we go...
11.602 @ 115.83 off a 1.579 sixty footer...
NEW PB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ran a string of traction error low 12's and a few shockers in there... then last pass of the night was an 11.856 (11.850 dial) @ 110.70mph with a 1.751 sixty... big back off at the end with the dial in racing trying not to break out... but i still got beaten, all on the line, my reaction time wasn't good enough...
what's changed since last round: nothing...
Before the next round i'd like to try a set of 90/10's in the front and a brand new set of FE2 rear shocks... and some more tuning... but i can't run round two, so it'll have to be round three for me :)

Good work, I love to surprise officials too when I rock up for classes they don't expect. Last year I did the same thing when I ran in Super Street and mixed it up with the trailered drag cars as I was running 10.7-10.8@132mph all day long. :)

another day of racing done (yesterday)...
and a mildly unsuccessful day, but a success at the same time...
i had a shocking day... it was hot, humid, bad track, goodyear tyres didn't love life - wouldn't hook up or respond to any kind of burnout or pressure changes...
i struggled all day to do anything in the 60' mark quicker than a mid 1.7...
i struggled all day to pull more than 113mph at the deep end of the track...
and i only managed 1x 11.938 @ 113.49mph with an unmeasured 60' time...
quickest 60' time for the day was a 1.740...
i won't be using Goodyear tyres again, i've just found them too difficult to figure out and they've been here and there with performance... i had one good round, but have only done 33 passes on them and they're finished... lines gone and performance gone too...
actually, that left shortly after i got them...
back to MT's next time...
anyway...
because i had trouble with qualifying quick i dropped back to Super Street but managed to make it the whole way through to the finals for an easy win against some poor guy who's car failed on the green light... so an easy 16 second roll through at 66mph...
But, I changed nothing on the car since last round where i ran the 11.602 @ 115.83mph...
the only change has been the passage of time...
September 20th i ran the 11.602 so off i go to the BOM data for day, Launceston Airport is the closest weather station to the drags... check the 3pm data...
17.1 degrees... 61% humidity... 1017.4hPa
Check the data for the approximate time of the days quickest pass, the 11.938 (9:30pm)
17.5 degrees... 83% humidity... 1006.2hPa
so it appears that not only had the track had 3 days of non stop rain up until friday night wash it all down... but the weather was pretty average...
that'd explain the drop in trap speed no doubt...
anyway... another fun meet...

What tyres were you using when you ran the 11.60? Goodyear I presume, but what size? I'm trying to decide on either slicks (stock brakes) or 17-inch Semi's to clear the Harrops, if I cbf changing them over that is
:goodjob:

my maloo doesn't have the R8 brakes, so the right 16" wheel will fit over the rear brakes...
i use 255/50R16 tyres...
i did run on 26x8.5 slicks and front runners a while back, but for the time it took to change all the brakes the week before the meet, and all four wheels at the drags, it just wasn't worth doing... the times didn't improve enough to make it worth the trouble, and it was a bit wobbly on the track which i didn't love too much...
the 11.602 @ 115.83mph (1.579 sixty) was done on Goodyear Eagle SS Drag Radials which were 3 months and 8 passes old :
http://www.vpw.com.au/product.asp?CatID=15&PrdGrpID=4547&ProdID=230299
previous was a 11.735 @ unknown trap speed (1.573 sixty) on Mickey Thompson ET Streets which at the time were 11 months and 35 passes old...

Thanks for the info mate, as I said I cbf changing the rear brakes either. From what your saying I think im doing the right thing by sticking to radials or ets as im not really chasing times I dont really care about .1sec, just mph

yeah mate... just having a quick bite to eat before heading off to hobart for the weekend... it's a nice trip in this thing :)...
500km of weekend driving with 3.91 gears, a 6000rpm stall with no lock-up and a 237/242 camshaft.......... :)
it'd surprise most people to feel how pleasant it is to drive and ride in.
only those with the 6k stalls really seem to understand them...

i reckon it would be a nice trip in that thing wats not to like about it mate, you entering in powercruise? wats the fuel consumption like down to hobart in yours fairly good? its a bloody neat lookin ute always loved it and that nice shiny exhaust system under it

not the trip i just did, but one the week before, we managed to get from Summerhill to Blackmans Bay and back on a single tank...
i think it was 430km and about 54 litres of the good stuff... approximately 12.5L/100kms on the highway...
and as you'd know, tassie is not flat, there are loads of hills on that trip, and especially the crawl through hobart is really hard on juice...
it's actually better on fuel now (with the TK) than it was before i did the cam... and that's not even a porkie...
the best economy i've managed in it since doing the cam was 11.2L/100kms on a trip from Launceston to Brighton and back...
at the moment, over the last 1,800kms of driving the average speed is 54kph and the average consumption is 15.5L/100km...
it's hard on fuel if you're hard on the pedal... like any car really...
not entering powercruise... i thought i was going to be busy that weekend, then i was free and by the time i knew entry fee's were at full price... i'll go to tassienats instead...
running there on 16" continental street tyres for a bit of fun... see if i can manage a mid 12 on them :)

I can vouch for the ride of the beast i was only saying to dwayne the other week it is as nice as riding in a ve ute, quiet (untill pedal down obviousely) comfortable, no squeaks, knocks, wind nothing its a credit to him it has maintined a perfect street mannered car that does 11sec 1/4..As for the 6 k stall i was definately a skeptic but from riding in it i would have nothing other if that was the engine package i was building again..highly recomended...on congrats to DC..

i'm happier with the 11.999 than i was when i ran the 11.602 a few rounds back... it was a harder time to achieve... and blew so many people away when they came for a look and saw the engine, then the tyres!!!!!
