View Full Version : Traction Control - Out of Control

I've been having a small problem with the Traction Control turning itself OFF. It is accompanied by the 'Check Engine' warning. Everything seems to right itself; I turn off the car, let it sit for a while, turn it back on and all is well - for a while!
Holden said they can't do a diagnostic if the fault is not present at the time I take it to them.
The car (04 CV8R) has MAFless Edit tune, along with mods to exhaust and Cam. Would any of these mods upset the Traction Control function?

Pete I had the same issue with the E series GTS. It ended up being my pipe on the modded CAI had split in 2 as one of the clamps had come off.
It was really messing around my TC (switching on and off by itself) and the engine warning lamp remained on. The car went into limp mode.
I put it back together and both problems went away.
Since then I've got a bracket on the modded CAI so it doesnt vibrate and cause this problem again.
May be something similar on yours .. just throwing in an idea.
Scott
i had this fault with my vx , but when i turned of the ignision the fault would go away i took it to holden 5 times before they found it had a faulty abs sensor on the right front wheel

Pete try using your spare key, I had a similar problem at one stage, defiantly turned T/C off, not sure of check engine warning, ended up I had a faulty key, replaced under warranty.
Worth a shot.....

I had this problem in my VY.
Whatever you do dont ignore it!!!
I ignored it and the VY ended up seizing up on me twice, once in maccas drive through - that wasnt so bad because it would re-start rather quickly.
The other, seized up completely on bell st in the wet and at night at 70kph with no steering at all or brakes at all..and wouldnt re-start in Neutral.
Has anyone tried moving the steering wheel *locked* or using the brake pedal after its been pumped numerous times after turning off the car..
Like that.
After that i literally shit myself, and took the thing back to holden saying it was a death trap, and i almost died in it, and they lept into action so quickly it would make superman look like a Datsun Sunny.
It ended up being:
- O2 sensors - shot.
- ABS module complete - shot.
- ECU - shot
Complete electronic failure caused by varying voltage 'spiking' completely frying everything.
Holden were more than happy to fix it quickly and under warranty.
But before that incident, the lead up was check engine light always coming up, and trac control playing up.
Just dont let it go,
When it comes up, dont turn the car off, and if possible take it to the closest holden dealer to plug a diagnostic in get a print out or whatever it is they do and take it to your dealer so that they can see for themselves.
Get it looked at.. it may be nothing, and Holdens tend to overreact to a simple problem..
But mine almost ended up costing me big time.
Cheers.
it's strange that there seems to be a few solutions to the one problem.
I wonder what the key or split intake tube had to do with it.........very odd

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, Guys. I certainly don't want it going to the extreme of bdzy88's experience. The hint regarding brake system sounds interesting, as just prior to most occurrences, there is often some extra brake usage. Crawling around the KFC drive through, doing stop starts and more recently: steep, windy declines have both resulted in the problem coming on. The O2 sensor will certainly be worth a look, too.
Once again, Thanks for the help.

I had this exact problem with my Series III Monaro which also has a mafless tune and full 2 1/2 " stainless steel exhaust fitted.
Was first diagnosed as a faulty ABS module. This was changed but still had the Check Engine warning coming up along with Traction Control switching itself off.
Ended up being a faulty throttle position switch. Since I've had this changed there have been no more issues.
Hope this helps.

Have had similar issues in the VX just before the battery died with an internal short - started turning off the TC every time I accelerated hard - which is fine until it rains... Had one big moment in the wet!

I had the fault come up again, took the car to Holden - without turning it off. They diagnosed a problem with the throttle sensor. Sounds like a problem similar to Scott and BlackIce. Holden offered to re-map the PCM back to original; I declined. I know from past experience that it does not fix the problem, and I nearly cried when I lost my 40 or so extra kW last time!

Sounds like your problem is exactly what I had with my Monaro. It's more than likely giving you the sh*ts just like it did to me, especially when the check engine warning chime went off...
As I said in my last post, changing the faulty throttle position sensor for a new one fixed everything.
You've done the right thing by not letting the Holden dealer overwrite your tune as there's no need for it.
If you can't convince the dealer to replace the throttle position sensor without wiping your tune then your best bet is to get the job done by a reputable workshop in your area (perhaps the guys that originally did your tune?).
Best of luck with it.
