Hi all,
I currently have a pretty shmick VS Senator 185i and as one would expect its a case of natural progression, Holden 5L, now wanting an Ls1 6 speed.
Now I absolutely LOVE my VS HSV's so its kinda hard to part with one(also got a VS Clubby which I wouldnt part with), but as days go on, I feel I need a change of scenery from the Senator. Im currently looking at replacing it with a VT2 SS/VX SS/ VT Clubsport R8.
Once the Senator goes, I can pretty much slide into a VT2 SS for next to nothing, outlay 2 and abit odd grant extra and get a VX SS or save 4 grand and get a VT R8. My pic of the bunch is the by far the R8, as Ive only owned the 3 cars since being on my L's, 2 of which were HSV's and one was a VS SS. The SS I didnt enjoy much as opposed to the HSV's so I sold it and dont wanna make the same mistake again. Being a uni student on limited funds I wanna make the right decision the first time around(stuff like higher HSV insurance isnt an issue to me)
Id love to hear a few peoples opinions on these cars and my situation if possible please. Is the HSV worth the extra coin in these models? Ive driven a few of each, but its hard to get a grasp of if you will be happy with a certain car in 20 mins of test driving
cheers all:thumbsup:

Coming from a non VT R8 driver I would say its worth the extra $4g. You get better seats, brakes, wheels and kit compared to the SS'. You mentioned that insurance is not really a concern as well so I would definitely go the R8. Plus, its a HSV :D and Im sure you know its a different feeling driving a HSV compared to an SS.
Another option for you is to try and be extremely patient, and look for a VX SS with leather and sunroof.

I'd personally go for the newer VX SS, purely for the fact its a bit newer. (k's dependant ofcourse) Also, depending on personal preference the series 2 VX SS have the nice anthracite interior as opposed to the VT's grey / pewter interior. Just my two cents worth, good luck with the hunt, whichever way you go, you'll be on a winner.

VTII R8 > VX SS > VTII SS
Make sure the R8 is fully optioned, and you'll be laughing. But smart money is on a VX R8, they're getting really cheap now

I was in the same position a few months ago, either buy a VX SS or VT R8. I went the VT R8 and I'm glad i did. One you get bigger brakes, more KW standard, the coulson seats 18" rims, including your spare. The list goes on.

it really depends what you want from it, a car to drag or a car for the street, The R8 is the way to go for the street(as i went) but if drags are gonne be your thing then maybe an ss. I had trouble sourcing some wheels to fit drag tyres to in order to clear the 315mm rear discs.
But the way I see it you may go to the drags only every so often but you can drive on the street anytime you wish.
the R8 is much much better optioned than a SS, seats suspension, brakes, body kit, comes with the factory HSV extractors, wheels in 18" allround including spare, and a build plate.
if you do go the R8 try for a m6 over an auto, much more fun to drive and how these cars should be
Cheers

i went for the vx ss for around those dollars. i wanted a low k's car as i do quite high k's. o got an 02 car and really prefer that over something thats 3 years older.
i like the body kit and look of the vx ss...
its all comes down to weighing up individual cars, not models in my opinion. the one i found was straight as an arrow and in very good condition.
r8's are awesome cars none the less, but for what i wanted, my ss is great.
if my car was stolen or something, id seriously look at a vy sv8, as they dont look as dated. might be something to consider also for those dollars...

Many thanks for the opinions lads.
At this stage Im leaning more toward saving alil more and getting the R8. Reason being, IMO, the SS is a great car(both VT and VX) but alittle to 'subtle' for one of a better word, and Id spend a bit changing the look of one if I were to buy one(which is money I dont want to spend) whereas the R8 is agressive and probably worth the extra 2 odd grand over a VX SS, in the form of brakes, suspension(I believe the R8 got GTS spec suspension according to an article I have on it) and trim. More to the point I could probably see myself happier for longer in the HSV than in the SS. Its probably wiser to be happy with the older HSV for a few years than have the newer SS and want to sell it in 12 months and lose money unnecessarily.

Thanks Andy, being an East sider I prefer spending my time in the car going around Mt Dandy, and through the spur as opposed to the drag strip.
And yup, Ill ONLY be going the manual box in this car
Many thanks for your offer too chief:)
You never know I could get **REALLY**lucky and someone selling an R8 wants a VS Senator as part of a trade:confused:

To answer your original question - YES, the R8 is worth the extra $$$.
The reasons have been highlighted and the HSV is a good piece of kit.
Cheers and no worries for the unbiased () opinion!!!
