View Full Version : LED BRAKE and INDICATORS
Yeah yeah I did a search and non of the Thread titles had LED in them but 11 pages came up, yes I selected Thread not Post.
I want to put LED brake lights, indicators in the SS. I cant find anything on here about them Ebay had some but seemed dodgy.
So has anyone used them here or know of anywhere that sells them.
Any help would be great.

You'll need to be careful cause I put LED taillights in my ute, it killed the curise control cause it apparently needs so much running throught the ssytem and putting LEDs in lowers the voltage and thus kills it! PLus they were pretty bloody dull!
Thanks for that fellas
Anyone else use or seen LED's in taillights, apart from the VE's.

After much stuffing around I did my tail lights. 1st problem, because they draw lower voltage the bulb failure light kept coming up on the dash. 2, they were shocking in terms of brightness. Left one normal el cheapo globe in one side, put the LED in the other, and the el cheapo was way brighter!
So I concluded no good, and I took the globes back and got a refund.
I have thought about this, but decided against it after reading Drizzt's post in this thread:
However, if you do go ahead, I believe you will need to put in a special relay for the indicators like these:

I think you could get around these problems if you put appropriate valued resistors inline.
If you do go ahead with it, let us know how you go.

Yes I have Super bright LED's in my VXII sedan.
& Yes they are a fraction duller than standard but are more RED - especially at
night.
Got mine from the led shop www.ledshoponline.com.au
HYPERBRIGHT SUPER RED (They are the brightest available)
24 LED BRAKE/TAIL LIGHT SET
12 volt
Model No: AB1157 12v 24HB
One Set 12 Volt DC( 2 bulbs)
AUD$ 35.00 Inclusive Gst
PS - don't bother with the centre stop lamp - it's too weak, Where as instrument cluster LED's are to big to fit.
The Festoon LED (The more powerfull one) for the boot works realy well at night - like haveing a neon light in the boot. It's sort of deceptive during the day - but you don't need it then anyway!
LED's all saves power for something else in the car. LED's are great for certain applications.
I wish the dam car manufactures would make them standard.:serenade:
Thanks so much guys, some more great info there.
Cheers,
Troy

so how come the car that have them oem work so well, but you can't get them as bright aftermarket.
even all those new trailer led taillights available are quite bright.

LED's are a pretty amazing piece of hardware. They are very efficient at converting electricity to light, but do have some losses. Because the part that actually creates the light is very small, these small losses heat the core component up a measurable amount. The thing is though, LED brightness is directly proportional to the power it consumes, so in theory, if you apply a great voltage to a LED, it will give more light. The problem is that the more power you give it, the more it heats up and as it's sealed in plastic, it can't get rid of the extra heat. So you get the old "the light that burns twice as bright, only burns for half the time" problem.
If you could reduce the amount of heat build up in the LED, then you can run them at a hight voltage than std and get more light out of them. You could try some sort of external cooling system, but that's not the way to do it. What is done is to pulse the LED's with a higher voltage, but only for a very short time. Because the LED gives of light instantly, if you pulse if fast enough, the human eye can't tell that it's turning off. the theory is to apply a higher voltage for a split second, then remove the power before the internal components have a chance to overheat. Leave the power off for a bit, then re-apply the power. The average power consumption of this pulsing ends up the same as if the normal DC power was applied, but the LED appears brighter due to the pulsing.

Because car manufacturers have to ensure that their lights meet the relevant standards on brightness etc. The cheap Ebay junk stuff does not.
In fact just yesterday I was following a truck/trailer combination and in the afternoon sun his LED lights were all but invisible. Luckily he also had bulb lights as well.

I just replaced the navigation lights on the boat with LEDs - much brighter and only 20% of the power consumption. They are the festoon type and replace the equivalent 18w incandescent festoons. I got them from the chandlery and they were about $22 ea but so far - very good.
