Guess what? Bit of a surprise.

I'm taking members car pictures and doing vector art illustrations of them..

First up? CLARKEY!

http://images.cainer.net//uploads/clarkeylines.jpg

Lines are done, and the rest of the car will be coloured and displayed when finished.

The others will be completely random and in no particular order, they will be created as I see fit. Feel free to send me a picture of your car, but if I think that the picture is not good enough it will not be accepted, and if this is the case I will tell you so. If you send me a picture, it will be selected at random and not put in a queue.

Stay tuned fellas,
-Rob.

EDIT: My email is robert@jusworldwide, please write "PHOTO FOR VECTOR" in the subject line (incl. caps) so I can sort it out from the spam mail.

Nice one red.

Would make a nice t-shirt design aswell.

(FYI Corel X3 has a nice trace function if you can get you hands on it)

I've barely finished it (probably about 10% done)

And I wouldn't ever dare touch Corel :yup:

If you know how to use it, Corel will outperform alot of the others as long as you are not going to get it professionally printed.(It prints just as well but the printers will most likely be set-up with Adobe)

I have all the Adobe suite and still use Coreldraw. Infact I've been using it here at work for the last ten years and never felt the need to cross.

But I still love my Photoshop ;)

Nice job. Needs a bit of a cleanup around the edges though. Lots of artifacts in the white section around the door sill, wheel arches, lower front bumper, bonnet, roof .... everywhere really :p
Best to get those cleaned up before you add the background and forget that they're there :yup: There's a bit of inconsistent smudging across the bonnet and windscreen too, where I assume you removed reflections from the original photo?

Other than that it's quite nice. (yes, a compliment to you from me ... who woulda thought?)

On the bonnet, those are my attempts of imitating some clouds, it didn't work as well.

The artifacting is because I'm saving it at quality 8.

I didn't remove anything from the original photo, I made it as is with the pen, brush, and eraser tools. I didn't modify the original either, it's basically a cell shade.

Nah mate, the artifacts I'm talking about aren't JPG lossy artifacts. They're just photoshop "overspray" for want of a better word.

On your larger file, zoom in on the areas I've highlighted here:
http://www.excelerate.com.au/downloads/XLR8V8/clarkeycolour12feedback.jpg

The one above the roofline is still very noticeable in your final image with the background

P.s. there's a similar spray left above the rear window of your VE coupe 'chop here: http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showpost.php?p=885761&postcount=22

Ahh! I can't really see them too well on my laptop, I may slap a black background there and try find the layers to get rid of them. Thanks for that mate, I removed a couple but it's hard to see them. They're just "overspray" from highlights ive added.

Thanks again :)

I'm using Adobe Photoshop CS2, it's a very complex process, and it took me 16 hours to do even with 5 years experience under my belt. But if you really want to give it a crack, google search "Photoshop Vector Tutorials".

Realism is one of the hardest things to achieve when doing any type of artwork. The slightest mistake could make the whole thing looks crappy, and you may never be able figure out why it looks bad either.

You're doing pretty well, keep trying, and try to make more colour transitions between the lighter and darker so it gradually changes, rather than violently. Also, use the eyedropper tool a lot, it helps. :)

Yeah, it's just a rough sketch at the moment. I'll add the transitions for more detail as I go on. Though I'm already bored so I might just give up.

Well spotted XLR8 V8.

Red, you might also get a surprise when you see an RGB image printed in CMYK. Those artifacts ( colours and other things ) could become much more obvious, especially if you're having problems spotting them on the screen you're using.

Before you commit to providing a print to customers, send me an image ( the best you can save - non lossy compression ) and I'll proof it and mail it back to you. It will be printed on the latest digital gear.

There is still no guarantee that you will get the result you want ( colour ) when you go elsewhere, as some printers tend to be a bit slack calibrating their colour devices, especially so when it's one or two prints.

You're doing good work, don't want it to backfire on you when it comes to the hardcopy.

Rob,

Here's some feedback from someone that hasn't seen your work before.

Had your image open in Adobe Indesign today, ready to print it to see what the output would look like.

A workmate noticed the car pic and wandered over for a look. He thought I was doing a test for Holden ( we have gear there, though it's not my site )
Told him it was a test proof for a young bloke on the car forum.

He's pretty much the companies branch expert on things Adobe and was blown away by the pic.... zooming in and out and muttering stuff in 'PhotoShop Speak'.
' Fantastic work ' he reckoned, ' obviously the guys a pro '
He was amazed when I told him your age.

Rob, he's an expert that concurs with what others have said.

Get a portfolio together and get it to Holden. :yup:

I'll P.M. you the results of the proof. You will need some adjustment for CMYK.

As for the portfolio, I'm doing much more stuff now, which is why I'm doing a lot of these artworks. I'm doing it all to build it all up to show to Holden to try and get work experience with them, hopefully it all goes well :)

Well, it's a red GTS, and it belongs to a guy that goes by the name of John.

The next one after this will either be one of:
-A red VY SS lookalike with a pretty big intercooler.
-A black VY SS with some snazzy number plates.
-A white VY SS with some pretty nice rims.
-A black VE SSV with some nice badges.
-A black VE SV6 with a pretty crazy driver.

yep, they do......but every designer is a good sketcher.
the best design ideas are useless if you cant get them across, designers do a lot more than saying "oh that looks good just flare those arches a bit more, drop that roofline 5mm" etc

not saying he cant do it but sketching is a vital skill needed.

Practice, practice, practice

I agree that sketching is part and parcel of car design but my point was that the "design ideas" would be the most important.

No point being a brilliant sketcher if you can't think of good original designs.
