The dvd etc was installed when I bought it a month ago. The photos of the engine bay were taken before the mafless tune, so I don't know where the original owner got the engine covers from, I've since installed a piece of 100mm gutter down pipe to replace the maf until I get me a OTR. Doesn't look very nice but won't be any restriction.

Thanks for the comments.

nice car mate, hope to be picking one of these up myself next week. Just wondering like the other guy, where did you get the engine covers or what sort are they?

23-04-2007, 07:50 PM
I've got a sting red clubby too, they are my favourite, just love the bright vibrant red. Still looks like it came from the factory 6 years later.

You can buy those engine covers from a few places. The genuine ones cost about $800 and belong to the GTS, get them from www.holmart.com.au (http://www.holmart.com.au) or holden, I got some fibreglass replicas for $300 on ebay and they have a great finished so i'm totally stoked. no way was i gonna pay 800!!!

I think mine were resprayed with the car as the paint looks identical.

cheers

I got mine in sting red which is colour coded to the car.

If they are the exact same colour they are probably fibreglass replicas, as the GTS covers look slightly duller and don't have a gloss finish.

Just a quick update.

I've installed (myself) a twin 2.5 XForce cat back as the old single three just wasn't doing it for me. The sound now is actually quiter at idle but louder at full noise. Now I need bigger cats and some pacemekers.

Very nice rig there mate.

As for the Starr 84mm TB - I haven't installed one, but it should be a bolt-on/off affair I'd reckon.

I was impressed by the cable tie exhaust hanger you are using...:stick:

Now to be serious.....one thing that you should look at would be to colour match the gearknob/boot to suit the red on the steering wheel. I reckon it would look good.

The VX is still the BEST looking HSV!!!

Cheers and enjoy your rig,

Macca

Thanks, the cable tie was only on there during fitting. lol.

Ran a 15.1 @ 103mph the other night with heaps of wheels spin from the 18's.
With traction control on (no other option) a ran 2 14.1's @ 103mph. Pretty crap.

I've got the Mickey T's and heading out to the strip tonight and it's going to be about 10 degrees......I'm guessing mid 13's.

I had 10 runs, 5 with passengers. Slowly dropping tyre pressure from 30psi to 15psi at the end of the night. It was 10 degrees too......brrrr

13.7 @ 105 mph (passenger)
13.6 @ 103 (passenger)
13.5 @ 104
13.3 @ 103
13.2 @ 104 (passenger)
13.2 @ 105 (passenger)
13.6 @ 105 (missed 2nd gear)
13.2 @ 106 (passenger)
13.1 @ 106
13.1 @ 106.4

I'm pretty happy with that as I was only aiming for a mid 13. Picked up 2mph form the cold weather too. I removed the throttle body before the drags as I don't think the tune was using it real well.

I'll post up a vid soon.

Hi,

Nice Clubby, I used to own one exactly the same except i had the coulson interior with white stiching and mine was in Sydney.

Wife made me sell it to buy her a Convertable, now do you think i could find one as much as i look for one :bawl:

All the best with the car and keep us updated on the progress.

Quick update, the underdrive pulley has been installed now http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?p=978266&posted=1#post978266

so 13.1 @ 104mph before the 4 into 1's and 25% underdrive, should mean high 12's for me now.

Nice car RB30X - Had to look twice too make sure it wasnt my old one

Then saw the photos of the engine with the maf pipe etc

I had the same engine covers Sting red with chev logo on each side from Emtech - $380 the pair

Good luck with the 12.xx et. I think you will be stoked when you get it, ..... then you will want a low 12

V Nice ride, one of my favourite shapes, love the lines from the spoiler through the headlights, up and over the bonnet - Great design work by HSV on the whole car

249.7kw at the wheels today. I was pretty happy with that, kind of expecting something near that but pretty stoked at 250 mark. I didn't even have 98 octane in it either cause I only use 95 unless I'm going to the drags and it only clicked on the way there that I should've had 98. Oh well, the bloke said its a bit rich in the top end and the timing dropped off too for some reason (probably crap fuel) so if that got fixed up it'd be over 255kw which is obviously what my plates say so that'd be sweet.

I'm going to send the results to my mail order tuner for an updated tune and include my next mod, 1.8:1 yella terra high ratio rockers. Which could be my last for a while as I'll hit a brick wall now as far as mods go....cam or forced induction...or both.

Thinking about hitting the strip again soon to get into the 12's before its too hot, plus I should punish my Z grip before it gets replaced.

Well I hit the strip again yesterday to try and crack a twelve but left empty handed. It was a really hot day and it was an afternoon qualifying session, not an 8'C night time race like my last time.

My best was a 13.0 @ 106.8mph. Picked up a few mph and dropped 0.1 of a second but I still wasn't happy. I missed 3rd gear twice. The ET streets were gripping like mad but I couldn't get the launches right. If I left around 5000rpm the car would seem to bog down a little?? and 5500-6000 would sometimes hit the limiter or it would squat on take off then kind of bounce after taking off and just after gear changes when it squatted again. Gear changes themselves felt flat. Like it was overfueling or something. I'd smash third and it would kind of hesitate for a bit or not accelerate as hard for half a second. I have noticed some extra fuel usage which Delco says might be a lazy O2 sensor.

To improve these times I have some 918 springs and some 1.8 ratio rockers to go in (maybe another tech article) and I'm hoping Dan can send me an updated tune with the rev limiter bumped up a bit. Maybe 6500, I'm not sure what is safe with those mods.

I'd appreciate any feedback.

Congrats on the time.

I know exactly what you mean about the launches. Slightly different situation, on my first time out i launched from 3000, then increased with each run at 500rpm increments to 4500rpm. I found 3500rpm to be the best.
similar to you, 3000 was too low and itd bog down, 4000 & 4500 seemed to unsettle the rear a bit and shed seemingly bounce off the bump stops. (Having said that i had the back of the ute filled with all sorts of stuff for motorvation )

I havent read what suspension your running, but IMO thats where the problem will lie. You may need to stiffen the rear a smidgen for the higher RPM launches, or alternatively, soften the front so the nose comes up more and keeps the weight transferred to the rear. I'm keen to get back to the track and test some different techniques (including a 5000rpm + launch if i get my clutch beforehand )

Look forward to seeing how you go next time out

The rockers feel great.

I went for a comparision dyno run but unfortunently made exactly the same power. The torque and air:fuel graphs were identical but heaps lower than before the rockers. This is due to a few reasons, during the first power figure the OTR was blown on top of the inlet manifold from the fan (and because I forgot to do up the clamp) and when the dyno operator put it back on he didn't notice the IAT sensor had fallen out and was sitting in around the pulleys and read a higher temp reading and probably leaned off the fuel (and maybe timing??). The second visit after the rockers went in was on a fairly hot day and the figure for the temp/humidity/pressure dyno calculation thingimijig had changed quite a bit. A well as the IAT sensor being in the right spot would have read the correct air the engine was getting and air:fuels were down near 12.0:1.

I'm a little dissapointed with the result, but hopefully some data logging and an update tune will get it running on track. It rained for the first time today since the rockers and it broke traction rolling on in third which it's never done before so I had a smile on my face.

and all DIY too :)
or most of it......???

anyway, love the VX shape... it looks so good. i just don't rate the interior. but the body is very sexy.

have you had it back to the strip yet after doing the rockers and valve springs???
i did valve springs in mine just recently but didn't have anything for the air fitting to pressurise the cylinder so i just wound each cylinder to top dead and let the valve rest on the piston whilst doing the swap...

Yeh everything bar the clutch I did myself.

The only thing I don't like is the dash (be it imaculate condition), I wish it was the VY/VZ style.

I have been waiting for it to cool down to take her out again. I need to get a 12 then I'll be happy (for how long??) When I ran the 13 flat during the day in that vid it was a scorcher. Should be able to do better on a cool night.

Yeh I didn't trust myself letting the valves rest on the piston. One beer too many and that could have been an expensive mistake. I even found myself compressing the springs before hooking anything up to the cylinder as it was.

Cheers for the comments.

A couple of updates.
I've picked up a fibreglass monaro bonnet which I dummy fitted to ensure it went on ok before I get it painted.
Also modified it to ensure the ally OTR doesn't foul or block flow to it.

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b26/RB30X/P1010218.jpg

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b26/RB30X/P1010221.jpg

I made up a section to replace the rear resonator too. (racing use only lol)

http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b26/RB30X/P1010296.jpg

You can see where the OTR fouled on the fibreglass bonnet. I cut away a small section, filled it up with expander foam then used fibreglass resin to seal it. After it's painted you wouldn't even know it had changed.
