Am I being ripped off for a bonnet scoop??

Hi guys,
I've been looking around for the past month to get a monaro bonnet (with scoops) for my VX SS.
I just found a guy in melbourne who does just the scoops (fiberglas) and is selling it for $200 which seems quite reasonable as a complete bonnet with scoops is aroung $600.
But what am concerned about is the fitting. He quoted me:
$200 - For the scoop
$250 - For moulding it to the bonnet
$300 - For painting the bonnet and scoop

It feels a bit too much for fitting and painting. Does anybody know or reccomend anyone that does this for a more reasonable price?

Doesn't sound all that unreasonable, my bumper cost me $250 to get painted.
Depends what colour its gotta be painted to. Chances are they'll have to rub the bonnet back and paint it from scratch.

you are going to blend a fibreglass scoops onto a metal bonnet and not make it look like its been plonked on their???? good luck, go out a buy a genuine one or at least a full fibreglass bonnet

The prices you have been quoted sound alright...don't know how it would look though. Have you seen any other work he's done?

Personally, if I wanted to get the monaro scoop bonnet look, I'd be buying the genuine product and paying someone to paint and fit it...but that's just me ;)

I've seen some of his work on pictures...but then again don't know if they are really his work or just some pics. I'm waiting to get a second quote from another bodykit garage.

As an alternative, if you don't want to fork out the $1200 for the genuine item, why not look around for a full fibreglass GTO bonnet? they pop up on ebay a bit, and whilst they probably dont look as good as factory (i'm speculating here as i havent seen one in the flesh), it would probably look better than a metal bonnet with some fibreglass scoops on it.

Unfortunately, if you want it to look the part, you'll have to do it properly. Either full f/glass, or genuine.

Yes genuine costs a fair wack, I know as I have done it, but I wouldnt want it any other way, as the risk wasnt worth it I dont think.

they used rivets and you can see them all the way around in the right light and the sanding was VERY BODGE

If you have an OTRI the genuine monaro bonnet will not fit. (my problem)

I paid same price but $400 for the spray. now I am going to have to spend another 500-600 to get fixed. disgracefull

There are places in SA if you do the research, a bonnet can be about 500, then paint. Well worth the extra

Another vote for the genuine bonnet. Might cost a bit more. But worth it in the end!!! Thats what I did anyway. As well as the genuine front bar, head lights, spotties etc.

If you can afford it, you will feel much better knowing you have a genuine one rather than 2 fibre glass scoops moulded to your metal bonnet.

Price sounds pretty close to the mark... tradesmen like to make their time worthwhile (dont we all)... and to remove/refit/cut hole/mount scoop/prep/paint it all adds up pretty quickly

Wait an extra couple of months and save up the extra to buy the genuine thing

I looked at a couple of jobs where the nostrils were added in and they stuck out like dogs nuts

I waited and got the real thing and Im bloody glad I did - everything looks spot on and it all fits and lines up properly

Don't - DON'T - go the el-cheapo route. In this instance, you do indeed get what you pay for. I have both seen and heard of horror stories in these glass add-ons.

Do yourself (and your car) a HUGE favour and either get your hands on a full glass bonnet, or spend the extra and go genuine.

By the time you add up what the dodgy add-ons are going to cost you, for a few hundred more, you'll get the right stuff...

I have been toying with adding one to Red for a while, but the $2K my guys have quoted for a genuine bonnet modded and fitted (and there is no way anyone but my regular body shop guy will ever their hands on Red) stops me... 'cause if I don't like it, no money back... and as yet, I'm not 100% - but what I do know is there is NO WAY I would cut corners and get the bits instead of the whole shebang.

dude spend the xtra and get fibreglass or original I put a glass 1 on my vx was xtra work with pin holes but was heeps cheaper $650 plus $400 to paint & fit, that was way back when they first came out. they should be cheaper now. I tend to agree - saving yourself a few hundred dollars is pointless as you will be spending that in a few months time when the glass starts seperating from the bonnet (thats if it turns out respectable to start with).

At the very least go a full fibreglass - genuine will always be the best option and one you know will stand the test of time.

As a matter of fact. The company who quoted me for those prices is actually from dandenong and advertised the scoop on ebay. I think it must be the one you are talking about as they are the only one around there who moulds the scoop. Thanks a lot for your post...i definitely wont go there. Also I do plan to get a OTR intake in the near future....so looks like i have to let go the monaro style bonnet
