View Full Version : Bit sluggish in the mornings...

I have a 5ltr VSII Wagon and for a little while (a month?) the engine has been very sluggish for about 30 seconds after kicking it over... though, only when it's been off for around 8hrs (always happens after work and in the mornings).

During this, if you gently squeeze the pedal the engine starts spluttering almost as though it's going to stall, but it never does and will respond normally in about 2-3 seconds. This spluttering behaviour goes on for the first 30 seconds or so. Afterward.. no problem at all, and the engine responds normally to any throttle.

What do you make of this? Could this be injectors? I was suggested it could be a leak there, so that over the long periods it is turned off, fuel has leaked creating an excess which needs to be burnt off (explaining the brief sluggishness).

Any ideas, suggestions?
The engine has done 202k's and unfortunately I'm not sure when the injectors were last changed (bought the car about 3 months ago)

Sounds like injectors to me as well - especially under cold start conditions.
Probably cost you approx $250- to have them removed, cleaned , flow tested & re-installed.
What's your fuel usage like ?

Sounds like a leaking injector. Do you get a nice puff of black smoke out the back when you first start it? See if someone can have a look when you start it.

thanks for the replies...

jez - got someone to look whilst I started and yeh, there is smoke coming from the exhaust though only when I put the pedal down lightly, and only during that spluttering for the first 30seconds or so. So I may get the injectors looked at then. Cheers!

pete - the mileage is pretty bad for inner city crawling/idling... I thikn I calculated it at 20lts/100km (pretty bad!), though on the highway I'm getting a good 450k's to a tank (drove it up from Sydney)...

Cheers, Matt

Economy was never their strong point - but you should be getting better than that.
Get the injectors done & at the same time change the fuel filter.

My 5L Falcon does that too ... maybe time for my injector cleaning too ...
