View Full Version : Seller not keen to have VY SS inspected??
Found a nice looking VY SS on the net for a good price, as the car is interstate (VIC), made contact with the seller to check that car still for sale. Yep, let him know that I'd like to have car inspected before talking $$$. All good so far. Got the inspection guys to contact to arrange time to inspect.. still going good, I'm gettin close to my new ride. Wrong!! Inspection guys called me to say when they called to get the actual address the guy told them the car was sold and didn't need an inspection. I then phoned the guy asking if the car was still for sale. Yep it was was the reply as well as everything is perfect no need to inspect??? :cussing: For the 21k to 23k asking price, who in their right mind hands over a bank cheq for that amount without at least getting the car checked out. Needless to say I did not pursue this particular VY SS. Would be Interested to see similar experiences from any of our LS1 family
maybe he is just too stupid to work out that the inspection is for you

Agreed, wait until the right vehicle pops its head up. I have just gone through selling my BA XR6, 1st bloke was a mechanic who did a full inspection for an hour, went right over it with me under the hoist with him, found a leaking powers steering pump and and exhaust weld crack, ended up falling through, 2nd bloke was 17, L plater, didnt pop the bonnet or even really want a test drive, paid cash though!!

If someone is trying to hide something they will not allow an inspection. It is as simple as that. :cussing:
Hey thanks everyone for your thoughts, almost let my V8 heart get the better of my logic. Yep, definetly better learning this lesson early on than after buying a lemon of a ride. I'm sure my VY SS ride is just around the corner - can't wait to find her !!!!! Cheers

My mech checked out my vs when i bought it and when i bought the ss i test drove it and then checked it out myself witha knowlegable mate and decided it was right for the price and decided that it was mine. luckly this was backed up when it went in for its 60000k service to have my mechanic tell me it was one of the most sound VU's that he had seen so i was quite happy with that so i guess its just alot of luck in the end because noone can realy know when something majour is going to fail (freek fail no warning) and in tthe end u just have to hope ur waranty covers the damage
Good luck to anyone buying there dream toy :)

im having a similar drama at the moment, lookin at a VX clubby in Brisbane, got a friend of a friend to call the guy to inspect it, i told the guy with the car he was going to call, friend of a friend said he called but no answer, seller said he had no missed calls. Organised a Vehicle inspections place to go out yesterday to look at it & the car wasnt there & phones were turned off, car wasnt back from getting a service done in time apparently. Re-booked for thursday so fingers crossed everything works out then cos its a really good deal! If the inspection falls through again ill just have to let it go.

One thing there's definitely no shortage of is affordable SS Commodore's.
If it doesn't feel right, walk away, and look at the many other ones available.

Hey just let this one go you will find another one. I had a similar thing happen to me when I looking to buy my first car last year, we organised the NRMA inspection with the guy and everything was sweet until the day of the inspection the NRMA called to say that the inspection was cancelled, so jumped on the phone to the guy to ask whats happening and he said he sold the car 5 days ago. When he said this a couldn't believe it he had sold the car the day before we rang him to organise the inspection :cussing:, and well two weeks after I found a better car and have had happy :driving: since

IMO the only reason a seller would decline to have the vehicle inspected is if they have something to hide. ie: shonky repairs, lack of maintenance etc.
Steer clear of it, be patient and another will pop up.
 I am really happy I found the LS1 family. I'm thankful for all the tips and words of wisdom - so far have narrowed down to a 04 VY SS with 70odd cliks asking 25k private / the other a 03 VY SS 90k 24k through a dealer. Any ideas on what realistic $$$$ I'd make on the pvt ss, definetly want to buy it for a good price without ripping the seller off - & well the dealer is a little different, the 03 vy ss has been sitting on his caryard for over 75days and has been advertised at the price since the 1st day. Any thoughts / strategies on how to approach would be welcomed, Thanks

Just my opinion.
You will find therewill be a few more VY's coming on the market very soon as the private folk on novated leases are at the end of their 4/5 year leases.
Most of the residuals on these are around the $17,000 mark now, dropping to around $12,000 next year for the 5 year lease folk. Adda few grand to these figures as a sweetener and Im sure you will get a decent purchase.
No doubt they will have high k's but I know of a VY SS Red, Auto 140,000 country Kms v good condition that is about to go for around $19,000
Hope this helps.

Well what i would do is go to the dealer and offer them 22k or 23k because after having the car on the lot for that long i think that they would be wanting to sell it by now. But really the choice is yours just go over each car well to make sure theres nothin wrong with them or even get and inspection done on them, if the klms isn't a prob for you then go for the car from the dealer and put the money you save towards some mods. In the end the choice is yours good luck.

Yeh, just wait till a good car comes along mate. I waited for ages. I ended up getting my 01 WH LS1 International about 2 years ago. Got it off a couple in there 60's, who lived out country so car had good country driven 80,000km's. Paid $27000 (most were $33000+). Had tow bar, tinted windows. Was immaculate in Phantom Mica. Glad I was patient. Still got it now & its the best car hey. With mods it got about 230kw @ the wheels:burnout:

When THE car comes along, you'll know it. I got my VTII LS1 Berlina a few months ago n I wasn't even lookin for a car! I was very happy with my VS V6 Exec(was absolute mint). But the workshop controller at my work told me his brother was selling a country driven VT LS1 with a very heavy rear main seal leak for less than half market price it was too good to pass up! The guy drove it over from NSW for me too. Engine out to do all the seals n gaskets and good cut wax, looks great. Lookin in all the local Adelaide rags, ya just can't seem to get VT LS1 Berlinas, but i'm very happy with it. Your car is out there, just waiting for ya! :)

The 04 ss with only 70k sounds good. If it's a manual, I reckon $23k give/take $1k would be a fair price in the current market.

There are a lot of great VY SS Commodores around. It is hard but be patient.
Always remember your first impressions of the car and never ever forget BUYER BEWARE
I sold my VY SS in October privately. The new owner didn't have any checks done on it at all but if he had wanted to I would have allowed any test by a reputable workshop / motoring organisation etc provided he paid for the check.
Any seller who is not prepared to do this has something to hide or is not that interested in selling in my opinion.
Everyone here is simply FANTASTIC :yahoo: With all your thoughts & tips, I could have ended up with a lemon of car in place of my Pride & Joy of a VY SS. Thought I'd found her(VY SS) yesterday, contacted the seller, got the VIn # then organised an invespection for today to be done. I called REVS with only the rego & Vin #, no engine # - seller couldn't find it - wanted to make sure no $$$ owing or fines.
Blow me down - Car was noted as a "Repairable Write Off" Jul/Aug 05. So phd the seller to ask what the story was .... hail damage etc. seller had no idea.
I phoned the guys who had already booked the inspection to HOLD OFF until I could find out specifically why the car was noted as a "REPAIRABLE WRITE OFF".
Anyone know how to get the details of why "REPAIRABLE WRITE OFF" and would you even bother looking at this car.
Thanks again & look fwd to your help.. Cheers

repairable write offs are damaged cars that were deemed uneconomical to repair from an insurance co's point of view. They can be repaired and legally re-rego'd however.the seller claims nothing of it - is there books/history , is he the original owner .Dont trust the sellers word mate, even if he seems honest .I would be running away personally or treading very very carefully

If its a repairable write off, its means the insurance co has decided it would be more economical to write the car off and sell it to a wrecker/auction than to pay to repair the car. Either way walk away and find another one.

I agree with Ryzz walk away and find another one, you will most likely end up with problems and more problems in the near future.

 Really appreciate your thoughts. Yep have decided to leave this car alone, as I'm the wiser & will just bid my time whilst my future Pride & Joy is still out there somewhere ... hope to find really soon ... maybe in this LS1 forum .. When I got my CLubsport, I insisted teh car go for a complete inspection at an RACV outlet rather than the ones that come out on sight, as i wanted the car on a hoist to be checked etc. The owners didnt want to leave their car unattended for 4 hours at RACV which I empathise with. In the end I said look, I understand where you are coming from but I would like the car checked thoroughly, then the owners said if it means selling it, we'll happily do it.
WHen I bought the Senator it was a case of "no worries get it inspected" then 20 mins later i had about 5 fone calls within the hour "i dont understand why u need it inspected it comes with RWC, why do the inspectors have to have it for so long etc". All it took for me was to say "if you insist the car is of good quality, take it too the inspection depo for me, and it will all check out and by the close of business u will have 10,000s of thousands of dollars more in your account"
I picked the car up 24 hours later;)
Now Im selling that car, Im happy for any buyer to have it inspected as that is wat I would want in their position. The only thing I see as a 'hickup' some sellers might see their time being wasted if the inspectors exagerate the cars 'quirks' as problems. I know when I got the report on my senator some of the things on the report was utter exagerated crap. It didnt bother me as I knew a thing or two about car basics, but for your avergae joe on the street that has no knowledge, this could be a deterant.
As others have said mate...you are not purchasing a rare model. There are thousands of SS commodores out there. When you find the right one you will know it;)
:teach: Now clearly seeing the message from all the helpful thoughts from everyone, the right car will appear at the right time. Feeling heaps better about it all & appreciate how open you've all been with you own experiences. Goin to be great actually seeing your ride when the next Willowbank day happens.

Exactly, there are always two sides to every story, Inspections can be very good for people with only basic or no knowledge of a cars workings but that can also be the problem. I have been on the recieving end of over exaggerated inspection officers justifing their positions with ridiculous claims.
Sometimes it can be in HOW something is written not WHAT is written.
I believe that caution is needed regardless if you get an inspection or not. Yes you could save yourself from buying a lemon, but you could also be put off a very good vehicle if you can't interprut the inspection report properly.
Inspection centres have a duty to perform and don't want to be liable & they cannot asume what is not important or not worthy of reporting on a individual basis, so it is understandable why the reports are the way they are sometimes. BUT this doesn't excuse the fact that with out correct cummunication many car sellers are made to look like shonks because of the above and I can see why some don't want a bar of inspection centres.
Two sides to every story ;)

A wise buyer would use the services of the forum sponsors.........there interest / know how and background Knowledge in LS1/2 powered Commodores extends a little further than a 2 page report on stone chips and non-existent oil leaks...you know the ones sited on the report * Seepage found *....but cannot say exactly where...
Bottom line :deal: .....Sponsors can offer a more cost effective and extensive report by far and generally don't have an inspection ratio of 9 Toyota Camry’s to 1 Gen111 Commodore...or in Layman’s language.... 9 school teachers to one car enthusiast

Had an onsite motoring organisation inspection years ago for a used VR. The inspection showed up vital items like a sticky hazard light switch, stone chips and worn carpet, but failed to notice pesky, unimportant things like a buggered rear main seal and stuffed valve stem seals.:deal:
Get a sponsor to look at it.
Balanced perspectives on the finding and reporting of inspection services versus the more expert eye and knowledge of one of our LS1/2 sponsors. I'll give the inspection guys a call to request a refund then source one of our sponsors here in Brisbane to at least intro myself & acquiring their services to check out my new ride. Thanks again Trust the weekend is going well!!!
p.s. Trust me, I surely am checking out the for sale classifields in the LS1 forum - be fantastic to find her there - easy!!

Yeah, over the years I've known of plenty of cars that have had RACV/VACC tests performed on them that only picked up useless shit like wiper blades worn etc and missed important (and expensive) stuff. Waste of time IMHO.
Cheers, phoned PT as they cls to hm = closed for the day - I ph Monday. Thanks Voodoo for the heads up on Markone2 has just finished pm,lookin fwd to his reply sometime soon.
