Hey guys, recently I just bought a set of fantastic 20" wheels for my SSZ. Fitted them, looked brilliant, but they scrubbed, now i knew it would possibly do this as its a massive wheel.....just for the record I have 235 profile in the front with a 8.5" width rim and a 245 profile 9.5" width rim on the back.
I got the car lowered the other day with King spings, 45 SL in back 46 SL in front. The car looks tough as now....but now the scrapping it REALLY bad, i knew this would happen, but the guys told me once the guards were rolled this would be fine. I got them rolled and It is not fine. I mean its only me in the car and every minor bump in the road is causing it to scrub.
I found where it was scrubbing...its basically the part that joins the rear bumper to the 1/4 panel and a touch up higher, like the side of the inner lip. So what i did was get an angle grinder and took off the peice of 1/4 panel that was sticking out and made it nice and flat.....i put one person in the back and its not as bad, but its still scrubbing. Im lost for ideas.
The only other thing i can think of is put the same wheels thats on the front in back....so i have 8.5" 235 all the way around instead of the fatter tyre in back. So i tried it...i put the front wheels on the back with some spares in front and it still scrubs!!! really frustrating. I dont want to get the airbags as they are pretty expensive.
Was wondering is anyone knows how much it would roughly cost to get a panelbeater to cut out the inner guard PROPERLY so it will never scrub again even with a full load. It's either get the gaurds pumped up/cut properly to fit the new wheels......or sell them *crys*, i spent heaps of cash on these babies....so thats my last resort......HELP!!! :P
Any suggestions would be really appreciated....thanks guys.

I have 20's on the front (20 x 8 I think, or it could be 8.5). with 225 tyres on the front and 22 x 8.5 on the back with 245 tyres.
My guards are rolled and pumped. But when the wheels were put on, the guy said to me that when your fitting wheels on its not the rim that makes it scrub, its the tyre.
What size tyre do you have on them? Maybe you need to go next size down?

Yeh sorry thats what i meant...my bad should of explainned better. Its def the tyre thats rubbing as i can see the marks being made on them. I got 235 (20 x 8.5) in front, and 245 (20 x 9.5) in back. My gaurds are rolled and yeh. Its not the lowering either, becos it was scrubbing even b4 i got it lowered....i dont think i can get 20 x 9.5 in 235, i think the smallest in 245...they usually put 265 on that width of rim..but yeh i dunno.
The thing is if i go the 235 all the way around its still scrubbing, cos i already tried putting the thinner tyres on back.........
how much roughly am i looking at to get my gaurds pumped out a bit, they are rolled but not pumped out??? I'm not sure on the pricing for that. Can any panelbeater do it or??

First of all you have to check that the combination that you are running is legal as this is the most important thing for insurance. If you have rolled guards and it's still rubbing then people use 225 wide tyres to improve clearance - which I think is gay but each to their own. Some wheels will tend to have more clearance problems than others. If your wheel is not specifically designed for use on VT-VZ Commodores then this can also cause problems. What is the aspect ratio of the tyre? ie 245/35 etc?

Yep i think its 245/35
Like i know thinner tyres should fix the prob as it wont come out as far....but i dont think i can go thinner for the width of the rim. 20 x 9.5" I think the thinnest i can get are the ones im currently running which is 245/35. They said they usually put 265/45 on those size rims, but put the smallest ones they could fit on. Hmmm.......see now why im stuck with this dilemma? :(

You'll be able to put 256s on it with a 19 inch rim :p
Your overall diameter might also be a problem. 18 inch 235/40 overall diameter = 646mm; 20inch at 245/35 = 681mm....

You could try different tyres with smaller OD. eg 20 inch 245/30 is 657mm which is closer to the overall diameter of the factory 18 inch rims and tyres?

i had to get the guards on my first VX grinded off and the bumper cut because of how low my car was.
it was just over $100 a side, and u couldnt tell that the guards had been 'butched' at all
i have to get it done to my VY too now as ive got 255s to run on the back

Would an additional 10mm of ride hight help? You could use a coil spring spacer in the rear and it's a cheap alternative if it works.

hey guys....just got back from the suspension place and they said they can put the bags in the coils to stop the big drop in compression when i hit a bump but cannot garentee it will fix the prob entirely since the fat tyres and how low it is. I went to the panelbeater and they said basically what you've done vxSSilver...they can grind the inner gaurd and take the 1/4 panel that connects to the rear bumper down, make it look clean and its impossible to notice for a few hundred for both sides. So im gonna go with that. Ive spend to much on the wheels and suspension to just do a 1/2 ass job at getting it right. Am booking it in for monday :) :)

What offset are the wheels??
If your not sure, take a look inside one of the spokes on the wheels and it will have a number with a P beside it.
