View Full Version : Which bike?

I'm planning on doing a hairy-chested, men only trip around Tasmania with my father and brother. I was thinking of hiring a CBR1100XX or similar sports-tourer but it isn't cheap for say 2 weeks. The other option, given the time involved, is buying a 2nd hand near-new bike and selling it afterwards. The BMW K1200S really catches my eye and 2nd hand values of these seem very strong. I might even break even when I sell it after the trip. Other options are a Yamaha FZ1S (but I like the FZ1N better but no front fairing/screen) maybe a Suzuki Hayabusa? My brother will be riding a K1200R so I need at least 160hp! :yahoo:

Couldn't you rent one from somewhere if you're not interested in keeping it after the trip? Garner's or something similar?

I think so but it is pretty pricey, I also want something with a heap of go and that means at least a Blackbird or something. I think they are available. I do have an ulterior motive, and that is I might keep it for a bit afterwards, this is just the underhanded way to slip it past the wife!:D

The K100RS i had vibrated at 110kph , was fine at 120 or 100kph . It wasn't a big problem there was just a bit of vibration through the bars, would hope they fixed that with the new models.

Having owned 15 plus bikes I would tell you to buy one. Hiring would be cheaper for you though. Garners is good and you could get a yourself a torque monster like a buell. Otherwise try Clipstone in Ringwood for a more beasty type bike.

I know that you want somthing with some go, but for a long trip like that I would be looking more at comfort than pace. Long stints on the Busa and XX would be a pain in the ass (and back, and arms etc). A BMW would be my pick.

Coming from Tassie, unless you have a bad back or something, get a full sports beast, you'll have way more fun on the roads down here ;)
Those BMs do look alright though, looks like they're trying to fix the "grandpa" rep finally...

Yep, I have done a few miles on a CBR929RR Fireblade and found that pretty comfortable, so I figure a 'bus or K1200S would be fine. That Suzuki above looks good with yoshis on it etc.

i reckon you would be better off buying a bike & then selling it afterwards as it wouldnt really lose any value (provided you dont come off & you would have insurance anyway ~ NRMA is best 4 bikes provided your 30+) where as if you hire a bike its gonna cost you!
