After lowering my car, i thought that a set of track stripes would set it off, so i rang up my local holden dealer to enquire about the price etc.
I was quoted $265.00 trade for the stripes, but was informed that they couldn't fit them, and apparently its a real cow of a job!
They told me to try a window tinting mob, and see if they could/would fit them.
So i rang up to enquire about the pricing to do so.I was quoted $295.00 to fit them, with me supplying the stripes!
So all up it was going to cost me $560.00!
Guess i won't be getting track stripes put on anytime soon!:vpo:
Has anyone had any experiences getting track stripes put on their VE at a later time after purchase?
Thanx in advance.

surely a signwriter could put them on for you at a fraction of the cost?

I had my stripes fitted about 2 weeks after I got the car, and they were done by the HSV detailing people here.

There were some posts on here a while back about how much of a prick of a job it was and a dealer who tried to do it wasting at least one set trying to get it right.
That's the advantage of getting it done as part of the original purchase or by HSVi - even if they stuff up a couple of sets it's their problem whereas if you get a signwriter or someone to do it and they stuff it up then you're likely to have to wear the cost of another set, depending on what agreement you can come to on that possibility before you give them the job.

Forget the crappy matt stickers. They look like contact.
Go see a couple of panel beaters / custom shops and get some sprayed on.
Leave them off, screams try hard and looks crap.

GPT, I am guessing you didn't grow up in the late 60's and early 70's then??? :yahoo: I love them, and I don't reckon they have a thing to do with 'trying hard', but that's the funny thing about opinions - everyone is entitled to one.
I have found however, that like GPT, folks either love them or hate them - there is no in between.
HSV left some some paperwork in the car after fitting the stripes and it included diagrams of how / where to fit the stripes. It also depicted several templates that are used to properly position the stripes, and this suggests the absence of these templates would make it nigh on impossible to do a good jobbie. I think the inference being that if you buy the track stripes to fit them, make sure the templates are included - FYI.

If your heart is set on them go and see the salesman you bought the car from in new vehicles. He should be able to arrange the supply of them and also get HSVI to fit them for you. HSVI do a mobile service and fit these at the dealers. They should also fit the HSVI 'plate' under the bonnet for you.

I do remember the Monaros from the 60's and 70's with these and I do like them. But on those cars ,from that time period.
Just my 2c.

The problem with fitting these is that they require a special template, and being such large sheets of vinyl, are very prone to trapping bubbles or creasing.
Dealers hate fitting them, and the HSVi guys don't enjoy them either, just they do more of them, so bugger up less of them.
And yes, dealers can fit them themselves, but many wont due to wastage.

Putting stripes ( adhesive decals ) on is easy and there's no reason to waste a set if they tack in the wrong spot and need to be repositioned.
Make an extra soapy mix with ordinary home brand dish washing liquid.
Sponge the soapy water onto the panel and position the decal, it will slide around for quite a while. Use your palm to squeeze out any small bubbles.
The soapy water does not affect the adhesion and I'm surprised that Dealers have dificculty doing this, given they have a template to follow

The factory ones MUST be applied dry.
They do this as the quality of vinyl they require for warranty and longevity can't be applied wet like window tint.

I have been a stripe fan since my first car (HK Monaro) in 1978. Loved the HQ SS and GTS with stripes and was one of the first to sign ip for my GTO LE when they were announced with stripes.
However I cant stand the stick on crap that is optioned on the VE. They just look cheap and tacky to me.
If I owned one and wanted stripes I would come up with a nicer design that flows better and have them professionally painted.
Stick on is definately TRY HARD !!
Happy Cruizin.

Try hard... whatever.. I think there is a significant price difference we are talking here to have stripes painted vs the current option to stick them on..
So I guess all of us 'try hards' who have this option will just have to live with
your opinion. :moon:

This would only be because it is not done at the factory when getting the paint job. I am sure if Holden thought they would take off that they could add them on the line. But since they are an aquired taste & not that many people have taken them up I would say that Holden have done their homework & saved a fair bit of cash by not painting them on. If they had people who knew what they were doing I am sure there would not be so much wastage. But then again Holden have enough trouble servicing cars let alone putting stickers on them correctly.
Correct me if I am wrong but the previous GM cars that had these type of stripes were painted on weren't they?? (not talking about the pinstripes up most of the older model commodores) But then again they were marketed as performance cars, not family sedans with a V8. Wait 10 years until they start to fade & split, we will see threads about how do I get them off & fix my paintwork without respraying my whole car.
Even worse is that I have seen them pop up on 6cyl cars, you have to admit that this is trying a little hard. Takes the whole "performance/muscle" car thing away.
But like others have said, if you have stripes good on you guys. After all your car is no one elses but your own, so why care about what someone has to say as long as you are happy with them.
cheers

That's correct, and they were painted on my GTO LE as was the LIMITED EDITION 003 on the lower boot edge, HSV were quoted as saying the stripes and limited edition writing on the boot with build # cost them 5k.

I personally love the stripes but this is just me:thumbsup: . If you don`t like stripes ,do not order them or do not buy a car that has them

Most Yanky musclecars had stick-on stripes, decals, etc ... AFAIK most utilised a template to install. Most musclecar mags, HotRod, CarCraft, etc have do writeups on it ... it looks like a pretty timeconsuming and difficult job, but not impossible. So $560 is starting to sound like a reasonable price?

I got the stripes, love em.......
And to those who worry about the paint being faded/decals splitting, in 5 or 6 years time, i personally gave up the idea of keeping a car that long a fair while ago. Cars are only built to last 5 odd years now and your up for all sorts of repairs, I will probably be driving a VF by then anyway.......
Go the stripes and worry about problems when and if they happen.
Life is to short to worry about the future.
PS they look a lot better than the orange on purple stripes i have seen on fords!

The dealer put the track stripes on my Monaro..... I told them to take them off before I picked up and they suggested wait awhile and come back later if you still want them off....
Glad I did as most people think they look great and they have grown on me, to the point where I feel the car looks much better with them !
