View Full Version : Fire Extinguishers In Ute

Gday all, i've done a search and returned nothing so hopefully this hasnt been answered.
I've purchased a 1kg automotive fire extinguisher for a motorsport event, it needs to be somewhere easily accessible but i'd prefer it to be somewhere not in the way. I'm just wondering where other ute owners have got theirs stashed?

Cheers all.

Dude, I have mine stupidly placed behind the drivers headrest in the little well there. It's secured, but, if there is excessive impact, I'm really afraid it will be a projectile for my head!

I recommend NOT putting it there. Unless anyone else begs to differ that it can be secured sufficiently.

It is easily accessable, and definately not in the way though.

What about far forward in the passenger footwell on the centre wall?

I have mine mounted to the floor just in front of the passengers seat. Its out of the way and just far in front of the seat so you can still slide it forwards and backwards. And its within easy reach if you do need it.

I would mount it in front drivers seat, mounting it to the floor, WATCH OUT FOR BRAKE & FUEL lines,

I adjust the seat all the way forward, then place it in front of the seat, then move the seat all the way back & start mounting it, nice & close should you need it & its not in the way & Shooooooort people can still drive the car

I have mine mounted in the tray. Just behind the cab there are removable panels on each side.

I took them out and screwed in the bottle holders. 2x on the right. 1 on the left.

My cars not going to burn down in a hurry.

On the floor in front of driver's seat. As above, make sure there's enough adjustment room left.

In my old ute (VU) i just had it sitting in the middle of the tray. Sat in there quite nicely and never moved around at all. It may indeed become a projectile in a heavy impact but it would have to be damn heavy.

The idea of in front of the drivers seat is a good one, but if you dont want to permanently fix it there you could do what I did in another old car...

I just stuck the fire extinguisher mount/holder to the adjustable bar with race tape. Move it over to the left a little and you still have enough room to access the adjustable bar if necessary. That way its always at the front of the seat, but yu havent drilled any extra holes.

That wouldn't be suitable for Motorsport events like Mungrel is talking about. Needs to be fixed in place. May be okay for street duties though.

If you don’t want to drill holes and it is only for use for a track day try this:
Buy a piece of flat aluminium the width of your seat from “bunnings racing”
Bolt the fire extinguisher to this.
Drill a hole in either end of plate,
Unbolt the front bolts of the passenger seat
Stick the plate between the floor and the seat and replace the bolts.

Ghetto but it worked

Why not just bolt it between the front seats above the console? If the worst case does occur, it is VERY close to hand.

You mean like on the armrest / door where you rest your elbow?

Cheers guys, at this stage i reckon mounting it on the floor in front of the passenger seat, Last thing i want is (if it does come loose) for it to roll around my pedals.

I did look at the the rr parcel shelf but i am a lil hesitant about that as in the event of hard braking etc it could well become a projectile.

Shouldn't be a problem if you use a bolt & locknut rather than self-tappers.

Champ before you mount it in the passenger footwell re read your entry regs, It may state that you have to be able to reach it from the drivers seat, thus you be forced to move it on the day of the event to get passed scrutineering.

Second the scrutineering fellas should grap your extinisher (while in its cage) & give it a shake/wiggle to make sure its securely mounted, then they'll get you to remove extingisher & hand it to them to read the expiry date (check your entry regs)

Cheers

Passengers side of the trans tunnel would be the way to go. Or just infront of your seat, just make sure it's well bolted in and secure there.

my maloo has one mounted there from factory. ive never tried to remove it yet but haved checked to see if it was secure and i couldnt budge it. hsv would not have placed it there if it wasnt going to be secure, think of the litigation possibillities.
will check to see how it is secured later.

Yep that's exactly right. Also make sure the bracket is metal not plastic.

Under the rear window, between the seats with the extinguisher nozzle facing upwards. Right hand can grab the extinguisher in the same way many of us reach over to grab our missus when she is in the passenger seat ;) :serenade:

A scutineer actually installed mine for me in front of the passengers seat, and it has never been picked at any of the events I have been to.Basically if its within easy reach from the drivers seat its up to you where you mount it. Just make sure it is secured properly.

MB cars install them under or near the front seat region, indeed most makes do so. Don't skimp on fixing the item securely, if you can't achieve that, get someone who can.

Motosport events; 'triangle-mandatory' - source per my Sig and avoid, if you want improved all-round performance, a Euro/UN type, these are accepted under AS3790 in any case.

With time, AS3790 will harmonise with UN/ECE regulation (the Euro triangle) and old US type will go the way of the dinosaur, thankfully.

Purchase a hazard-warning triangle for your car to improve the ‘warning-time’ given to approaching traffic, at both crash scenes and vehicle breakdowns. Store it in the boot. I suggest Hella Part Number 2901 - $70, or from Auto Accessory Shops, - supplier "Prokit" - Item Number RG9212 - $20. A World/Euro standard triangle device exceeding AS3790 triangle performance requirements. http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/lic_drivesafebook_part4.pdf

any chance of some pics so i can check out the setup?

Yep its got a metal brack which is mounted by 6 screws by the look of it, and the extinguisher is held in by two metal clamps. I purchased it from repco and it had a label saying CAMS approved.
