First post
I'm thinking of getting a VXII SS manual sometime this year. I'm hoping to find a low milage one for around the 20K mark - is this a fair price to pay? And also, what about those oil consumption problems everyone is going on about? How do I look out for and avoid those? Basically the most important question is whether or not the VXII is a reliable car.
Cheers.

i was in the same boat as you and bought one last year.
havent looked back once.
$20k is fair but wait till you want to make it faster and FASTER and FASTER
mine uses next to no oil, runs like a dream. most of the reliablity issues were over by the time 02 came around...
good luck with it, its a great thing.
ps. expect to pay a few k mor ein wa than melb, maybe $22k will be the mark for a low k example

Cheers mate.
22K is almost VY money. Would I be better off getting a higher milage VY over a lower milage VX? Does the extra 10kw make much of a difference?

Should be able to pick up a nice low k VXII for 17-18k. Don't worry about the extra 10kw the VY has, a tune or even just exhaust will get you more than 10kw.

You should be able to buy a top shelf low klm VX for under $20K, You will buy a VY for between $22-27K depending on Klms and other factors. If you want to spend around $20K buy a real nice VX, they are a great car and at the end of the day you would have to spend $25Kish to get a real good cared for VY.
As far as the 10kw is concerned, you gan pick up far more than that just with an edit, exhaust, OR EVEN a cold air intake, (this is where the fun addiction starts, these things have so much un tapped cheap to get out potential,) and you would possibly not be able to tell the difference between the 10 kw of power of the 2 stock cars anyway.
Just one quick thought, make sure you spend the money and get the car checked out before you buy it by NRMA or RACV type org, can save heaps of heartache afterwards mate.
Goodluck and enjoy anyway you go.

I had my VX SS since new.
Its a very reliable vehicle.
The ones that use oil, due to piston slap sound almost like a diesel. Pretty easy to pick.
You'll get an immaculate unit for around $20G's.
Just don't be in too much of a hurry.

Just bought an 01 VX SS in red manual with 66000km in COUNTRY WA (400 odd kms north of Perth) for 24k from a car yard. Was a local car and the owner hardly ever drove it as he worked away all the time so he traded it in. I was happy to pay 24k for it as I knew it was in awesome condition and had some kind of warranty with the dealer.
Being in Perth and after a 02 model manual with Im guessing similar KM's to mine I think you would be looking more so at 22 - 25k from a dealer or 19-23 privately. WA prices are a little higher than other states and manuals are usually worth a bit more than an auto
I worked out it could of been cheaper to buy one over east and ship it here! And that is on Car sales ads listed advertised prices so with a bit of bargaining you could get a really good deal!!. But I wanted the security of a car I knew was good and the dealer is a friend of my parents so I knew he would after me not ripping me off or selling me a dodgy car.

Series 2 with leather and he is dreaming at that price more realistically 19 or so in a Eastern states market (IMO)

Just dont rush into it and keep looking until one really stands out at you
Whatever you get someone will tell you that you over paid so just spend as much as your happy to.

That would be nearly every one of them then :p
I'm fairly certain the most accurate way to gauge whether they have an oil usage problem is to monitor it over a period of time and check whether it's within 'normal' parameters (which you can get from your dealer).
Anyway, I'm sure most people who own/ed VX's with the problems had them rectified whilst under warranty. Just tell the owner you'd like to see the service/repair history for the vehicle and that should settle your worries

Thanks for all the advice. So, if I check the service history it should tell me whether the car has had oil consumption problems? Anyone know how fast a stock VX SS 6spd can do 0-400m in? i.e. what were the wheels/motor magazine times? Thanks

Ask the owner if they've had any issues with oil consumption and also ask to see their "service/repair history" (eg: invoices, reprints from the dealer, etc) to see what's been done to the vehicle.

I have read a few road tests saying a 6 speed manual does it in 14.4 seconds. I have found this page on the net makes quite interesting reading, do not know who did it, don't know how accurate it is, but it has quite a few cars 1/4 mile comparison times.
Hope this is of interest, and help.
