View Full Version : BNE: Car Detailing when the dams run dry!

The introduction of progessively more severe water restrictions in Brisbane had me worried "Will I still be able to get my car detailed in three, six or twelve months time". (I have had my GTS detailed every fortnight since I bought it new in Dec 2000, so it was a serious concern for me).

The immediacy of this situation really struck home when the original Level 5 water restrictions looked like they were going to ban car detailers from using town water. On hearing this I immediately rang my detailer to find out how he was going to get around it, and I can honestly say I have not worried about the issue since.

Why?

My detailer has had a 500 litre water tank fabricated for his van. He also has access to tank water to the tune of just over 160,000 litres (current capacity). He can still quite legally use town water, but since that effects my water usage, he has opted to become self sufficient before it is becomes madatory.

It's actually a good feeling knowing that keeping my pride and joy clean has no effect on the worsening water crisis. (it makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside) :bravo:

Good stuff Geoff, I might need to get his number of you, cause washing the car down at the Car wash at Brendale is a serious pain.......mega queues, day or night and they won't let you bucket wash down there.

Go a little bit south to carlovers at stafford road, not too bad offpeak.

I went down there the other night at Midnight for my usual lengthy detailing session with my own gear. Had to wait in line and couldn't take my time. Guess that's going to happen more and more often with everyone having to use the bays :(

Yep - Ben is a top bloke..... and a smart one as well. LBT and my monaro are to be made to look like new in the next week or so by him. He does a brilliant job and I won't trust my cars with anyone else..... not even me!!!!!

when you want to look after your car and its a good job the coin is a small outlay!

Yeah, it does get stupidly busy on peak times, but if you go early morning or late at night i take my own time with no queues or anyone parked up my bum at all.

Best ever detail I saw on your ute was around 2 weeks into ownership and perfected on Brisbane Southside...but then it had to be pretty damn good given the same bloke details LRC :deal:

No issues here with water usage. In fact we got a commendation from the council (apparently in the top 5% of companies for water reduction). What it has done is made us a LOT busier. Car yards can only wash between 8am and 10am on Tuesdays where my company can do it anytime. We have dealers begging us to take work. Now i just need to find more staff to keep up. I love water restrictions !!

This is true - but he's a busy man with other jobs including drag racing!!!!!! Nah - the ute looked top dollar in the hands of M12 for a few hours..... I'm just sorry it gets crapped up most days from highway driving.

I used to use the Carwash place up the road, but no more.

The water is filthy. You cannot rinse the car as the water is like it is 10% milk. Plus...it stinks. The missus almost puked the other week when I was washing the car.

I think they are recycling the water a tad too much.

Its another water tank for me so I can wash my car in peace.

The investment in a water tank and high pressure hose (Karcher or Gerni) is the way to go. For $1200 (or less if you get the council/state govt rebate) and you are set up for good. Wash anytime guilt free on the condition that it rains and fills ya tank!

Mate we just got 2 x 5000L water tanks. No use when there is no rain to fill them. Just there to collect dust.

I put mums car through the laser wash at Stafford Carlover's, not very impressed with the quality compared with the price! :cussing:
Washing it your self is the best bet.

I have a 60lt rubbish bin in the garage, I save the cold water from the shower each morning whilst waiting for the hot to come through and by the end of the week the 60lt bin is full, the Karcher runs fine feeding from the rubbish bin, maybe a bit down on pressure as against running off the mains
it uses maybe a third to half of the water I have collected to do a good wash.
It is only water that would have gone down the drain, so I don't feel guilty using it, whether I get a nosey neighbour maybe doing the dob who knows.
Only started doing this the past few weeks but seems to work ok.

I've been capturing the grey water from my washing machine's rinse cycle. It's free of particulate matter and has hardly any chemicals in it. What's the difference between using it to wash my car or just letting it run straight down the drain? Besides this, I only use around 40 litres of water to do this - way, way less than the average amount for washing a car I've read about (around 120 litres I seem to recall).

I've checked all the literature and couldn't find anywhere it says that this is not permitted. Anyone able to contradict this?
