View Full Version : VZ SS 6.0lt vs VZ SS 5.7lt worth the extra $

Basically is the last of the 2006 VZ SS's with 6.0lt really worth the extra 3-4K they seem to be fetching over the 2005 VZ 5.7lts?
I mean I want to do basic mods to the car Diff, Exhaust and edit, is there really any benifit paying extra for the 6.0lt ? is it really a lot better of a base engine? All I have read is that the bore is different and the compression ratio and it has 10kw more.
I am trying to get one at the auctions at this stage.
I currently own a 2002 WRX STI, which I regretable bought instead of a VYSS 2, I have owned it for 14months and am already over it the thing is a DOG in traffic and only comes into its own on sweeping country roads, get me back in a V8 commo !

I've driven both the VZ 6.0L and i currently own a SSZ (VZ) 5.7L....in performance there is no difference, not sure about the techical aspect, but generally there are no major differences i can tell of.

I was in the same situation as you, but chose the 5.7 as i couldn't afford the other.
When i was in the market buying my car i tried both the 5.7ltr and 6ltr.
The 6ltr felt more responsive imo.
Also resale value.
The 6ltr is likely to hold its value better over the 5.7.
If im not mistaking. The only thing going for the 5.7 at this stage is the aftermarket modifications. Although it wont take long till the market of the 6ltr takes over.

cool thanks guys, I am going out looking at some towards the end of this week, I want my car GONE within 2 weeks as I am sick of the sight of it... lol
What did you pay for the 5.7 AFAR?
Even not going to the auctions I reckon for 35K is a friggen bargain for a 2005 VZ SS A4 5.7 with leather, what great value for money!

Or you could get a VY Clubsport for that money if ya wanted to.

Apparently in stock form the 6L pulls harder in the LS1 "slug area" (under 2K rpm)
Edited I am sure there isn't a lot of difference, but if you compare apples with apples the 6L is a better option.
The LS1 (5.7) is still riding high on the ease of modification and output for bugger all dollars, closing the gap on the bog stock 6L, but just wait until some of the sponsors start getting brutal with the 6L! It will then start riding the bell curve of success that the 5.7 has enjoyed.
THere are also those purists that believe that the L76 (VZ 6L) and L98 (VE 6L without DoD hardware) are a much more responsive engine than the 6L LS2 in the HSV's.
well, that's my opinion over, oh and I love my 5.7, I just feel that they do lack where it counts in the rev range, certainly nothing like my old 5L EFI off the mark.

Putting it in very basic terms, the 6lt in standard form will behave much like a mildly tuned 5.7lt. I have the 6lt SS in manual form and with only the full exhaust ran a 13.85 @ 105 at Heathcote last year, full street trim with a passenger in the car. While everything else between the 2 cars will be much the same, the 6lt will not only be newer, but have better performance in stock form. It has the L76 heads std which are better than the ones on the 5.7 and will respond to mods better as well. But it will come down to the price difference.

payed $36,500 in october 2006.
Was in perfect condition.
Black, leather, all options except for the dummy things (sat nav, rear sensors). Had only 15K on the clock.
You could easily find something for less than $35K now. Especially with the VE out prices should be around the $30K mark by now?
Just be patient and find what YOU want. It's most likely out there :)

I picked up mine in January this year - with 20,000kms, '05 auto with leather, climate etc for 33k. Was from a Holden dealer too - and they had 39k on the window, so don't pay too much !!

wow great buy!
How exactly do you tell someone you only want to pay 6K less than sticker?
There is an awesome 06 SS 6lt at the moment with 20K kms but it is 40K ! I would seriously take it for 35K+ORC I am going to check it out this weekend

You should be able to do considerably better than that for a 5.7. Shop around a bit. The L76 is a better motor, no doubt but there is just so much expertise out there with the 5.7s that it is hard to ignore if you can find a bargain.

I have only been looking for a week now, if that, so I will keep researching.
But yeah I was steered back to the SS after I realized what great value for money they are! Same reason I considered the VY SS 12months ago but I got blinded by this POS WRX lol i hate it!
You walk in with the cash, and say me buy that for this price or me walk out.
yeah good point, I always thought 2-3K was do-able but never thought 5-6 was! will have to get tuff I guess, cheers

G'day mate, went through the same thing myself. Ended up finding a 05 VZ SS 5.7ltr manual in quicksilver with 17000ks last november at a holden dealer for 33k on road. Pretty happy with that considering it just had the rego paid (12 months old) and was a holden exc's car. I also drove both but at the time i couldn't find a 6ltr one for under 40k and it only costs about a grand for a ls1 edit;)
Cheers.

yeah that is what I am tossing up
buying a low 30K 5.7lt and having 5K to buy some VESS 19s and get the Cat back, CAI, Edit, DIff or get a 6lt and only have $$ for a cat back.
Fark it if I can't get in a 6lt for under 35K I will go for a 31-32K 5.7lt and spend some money on it :) I am the kind of person who hates stock cars sooooo not a hard choice LOL

Cheers mate and good luck:driving:.

I have an 04 5.7 and a 06 6.0 and tuned I guess there is little between them, other than the 6l still having more low end torque, and using more fuel without the ability to have lean cruise enabled.
Either will be nice, but if you seek an economical good performer, go the 5.7

I have recently bought a VZ SS 6.0L and it s*#!s all over my old 5.7L VY SS ute. It has much more low down power and is more fuel efficient.

But I took a new VE-SS for a drive on Tuesday and bought it!
WOW what an engine and what a car! I fell in love within 30secs of the drive.
I was planning on picking it up tomorrow but it has been delayed due to a Holden Recall on the brake lines :( BooooooooOo!
Oh well won't be too much longer anyway

In the long run I think it will be worth more in a semi standard form but only to enthusiastic people like us. I don’t think Joe public will look past the condition of the car and the asking price.
That then translates to you will possibly loose more money with the 6.0 VZ over the 5.7 when it comes time to upgrade.
My opinion only. If it was me I would be going for a mint 5.7 VZ and using the money saved for mods

The L76 will WAKE up BIG time with an exhaust upgrade too! I also installed (well sonny did  ) a 3.46 ratio diff. For me it made a big difference in throttle response too.
I agree with Simon... it comes down to price and whether you want a VZ 6ltr or a VZ 5.7.
My 2 cents

well yeah as I said I bought a VE-SS instead :D Drove one and was blown away! I had to buy it! cost me about 10K more than a 5.7lt VZ and about 7K more than a nice VZ 6lt, but I got about 2K more for my trade in on the newy, never ever owned a brand spanker either!
and just to add, the apparent recall which has delayed delivery of my car from today to tuesday, it has only affected a small batch of cars built in a certain period most of them new cars that haven't been delivered, and it was a brake line issue DOH no car for the weekend now :(

Exactyly what i done when i got mine, i had a choice of vz 5.7 or vz 6.0 for another $10-12k
I ended up getting my 5.7 and the rest of the possible cash iv saved can go towards mods or other things.

Yeah Im with you's on that one.. Spent $33000 for a VZ SS with 38000 on the clock full leather sittin on Zenetti 20"s.. 2 year new car warranty. And i can spend 10000 or so on all the mods.. and sum.. as opposed to getting VE
but its personal preference I spose:) I did enjoy test driving the VE though..:eyes:

If you're serious about a 6.0L I would shop around a bit mate, cos I bought my 07 ZSS 6.0L for $37000 on road, brand new. They're out there u just gotta nut em out. And now with the VE ute out they'll be practically giving them away.
