It does sound smooth, just lacks the tough note of bigger cubes. Im sure that being BMW it will be a great engine. Any idea on what hp/kw it makes ?

i dont think it lacks anything. Don't forget.. it has to blend in with it's sexy body and mature driver.

Pretty sure its has 309kw was a story on motor in last weeks Herald Sun.Around some test track it was 15 seconds a lap faster than current M3

Yes, the spec sheet in the clip says 309KW........ @ 8400RPM

That's a lot of RPM to get peak power at in a road car.

I read somewhere that BMW are basically adding or subtracting cylinders in a "modular" engine to power their next range of models. There's a coupe concept with a V12 and the V8 for the M3, basically chopping or adding cylinders to their V10.

I guess that's why it revs a bit...teeny cylinders...:p

The sweet sound of the V8 - can't be matched IMO

There is a 572 Impala in the media section that sounds way, way, way tougher !! :demon:

Still, I do like the shape of the new 3 series coupes.

Its not exactly a case of chopping off 2 cylinders off the M5 V10 to make the M3 V8, but both engines do have alot of similarities!!!!!

I can't wait till they're released here, hopefully before the end of year, I just wanna take one for a spin!!!!!!!!!

I imagine so...however from the short piece I was reading:

"...BMW no doubt will offer an M variant. Power for the highest performance model should be a 6.0-liter V12, which will essentially add two cylinders to the 5.0-liter V10 in the M5; the likelihood is that everything that wears an M badge will use a configuration of that engine. As example, the next M3 cuts off a pair of cylinders to have a 4.0-liter V8..."

Yeah when you look at it from a general perspective i guess you could say its chopping off 2 cylinders, but the M3 V8 misses out on a few goodies from the M5 V10 and uses a few different designs!!!!

Watched a video of the new M3, sounds absolutely sexy, i just wanna get behind the wheel of one dammit haha!!!!!!!!!

That thing sounds and looks horn!! I want one!!

Problem is its only got 400nm would of thought that figure would be a little higher even if it is only a 4.0lt.

Of course I could be just used to the torque figures LS1 & LS2's are putting out due to being a larger Engine.

Regards,

Daz

Sounds hot, especially up in the higher rpm, although as Daz said the torque doesnt exactly get me off, however seeing the pic of the whole car... thats a different story!
Its certainly a very neat and tidy all round package - now if only i could win lotto :(

The inline 6 actually sounds better than this V8 though. BMW should have used a flat plane crank like Ferrari.

...in your opinion you should say:p I never liked the sound of the M3 six.Too much a raspy, too metallic sound.each their own ,I was watching one at Wakefield Park with a modified exhaust which was even worse-had to block your ears when it passed .Too loud but without the smooth aural v8 noise...i dont rate the XR6 sound either ,so its a personal preference thing

Oh don't get me wrong, I love the sound of a V8 but I just don't think that this BMW V8 sounds all that crash hot compared to other V8's. Probably because it's stock so I'm sure it'll sound amazing with an aftermarket exhaust.

And if you want a good sounding inline 6, check this out.

Its not bad but if it has the I-drive system I don't want it.

Actually I like the previous version to be honest.

It sounds better than an LS1 stock.
Beats me how people are knocking the sound.

One awesome car.
Cant wait to see it in the flesh :D

torque wont be a problem beacause of optimised gearing from 6 speed manual or 7 speed dsg and short diff ratios. Also and there is a lot of area under the torque curve from 3000rpm staying strong up to the 8400rpm limit!

I must be the only person here not excited...nice V8, but the styling and interior of the current 3 series coupe leave me cold.

I'd save my pennies for a little longer and place an order for a Maserati GranTurismo instead :)

T'would appear so. Looks awesome. Those are some big heads on it hey?!

BTW, that Inline 6 video clip on youtube posted above, sounds pretty decent too!
