View Full Version : Gumball 2007 - Fatal accident in Macedonia

Thought this may be of interest here for all the fans of the Gumball. Was bound to happen sooner of later.
I posted about this in another thread, but I think it deserves a separate thread. Also, I posted about this on the Gumball3000.com Forums and the post was deleted. Apparently, for legal reasons.
Essentially, bull****, because the news I was relaying is from a Macedonian TV station, and already available online, albeit in Macedonian.

Anyway, in a nutshell:
Matthew McConville & Nick Morley have been arrested and are due to show up in front of a judge any minute now. They were involved in a serious car crash which resulted in the death of one person.
The crash happened when the TechArt 997 they were driving came out on the opposite side of the road they were on and crashed head on with an incoming Golf. The crash threw both vehicles in a nearby field.
The crash happened very close to a petrol station, and therefore there were a number of witnesses.
Matthew and Nick tried to escape in a BMW (not specified which), however they were arrested at the Macedonian - Albanian border.
The Golf had two passengers in it - a husband and wife. They were both seriously injured, and the husband - age 67 - succumbed to his injuries and died in the hospital. The wife is still in critical condition.
Personal note: Accidents do happen, and I'm aware of that. I'll refrain from commenting who is responsible for the crash. I am however extremely disappointed that they tried to run. I'm also disappointed by the Gumball3000 Forum moderators for trying to cover it up - a thread about the accident was locked, and mine was deleted.
EDIT: I was contacted by a Moderator from Gumball3000.com Forums and my post was returned.
Although when I try and visit the official forums now I am told "Sorry, but this board is currently unavailable. Please try again later."

Not good news at all, I have seen enough footage of these kinds of things, I suppose it had to happen sooner or later.
Here is a post from the gumball3000 site
British national Nicholas Morley, who drove the "Porsche" involved in Wednesday's traffic accident near border crossing Kjafasan has been arrested and handed over to the Basic Public Prosecution and an investigative judge. He has been charged with grave acts against traffic security and lack of aid provision to an injured individual, stated Ministry of Interior Spokesman Ivo Kotevski.
The traffic accident occurred at road Struga-Kjafasan, when the "Porsche" crossed to the other lane with great speed, hitting a "Volkswagen Golf" with Ohrid register plates.
The accident resulted in the death of the "Golf" driver Vladimir Capunoski (67), while his wife Margarita is fighting for her life in Skopje's Clinical Center.
Following the accident, the British national left the vehicle at the site and headed for the border crossing. During a police control of all vehicles, the driver and his co-driver were found in a "BMW" with Russian register plates.

quite appaling that they tried to run. If they screwed up they should take responsibility for their actions which killed one man.

Unfortunately it was only a matter of time. I love the gumball, it's great to see all those exotics get an unadulterated thrashing all around Europe/U.S but some of the risk these guys took was just too crazy for a fatality not to happen.
I would say this could very well be the end of the Gumball 3000. There's likely to be a big investigation into this which could/will lead the organizer's in some serious trouble.
Regards,
Daz
Could this be the end of all gumballs perhaps?

No sympathy.
The British retard tried to leave the scene and country after the serious crash, seemingly without making much effort to attend the other folk. Detest cowards like that. Even in third world plots one at least gets to a police outpost in similar events.
Potential complicity with other event parties.
Purchase a hazard-warning triangle for your car to improve the ‘warning-time’ given to approaching traffic, at both crash scenes and vehicle breakdowns. Store it in the boot. I suggest Hella Part Number 2901 - $70, or from Auto Accessory Shops, - supplier "Prokit" - Item Number RG9212 - $20. A World/Euro standard triangle device exceeding AS3790 triangle performance requirements. http://www.dpi.wa.gov.au/mediaFiles/lic_drivesafebook_part4.pdf

Yep, and even if he was only thinking of himself, I would have thought staying at the scene would look a lot better in front of a judge and jury than running and getting caught.

No very smart running from the scene of an accident. This alone tells me that they mustve been doing something very wrong (as most do in Gumball).

Man I just had a thought.... I wonder what that Macedonian jail cell would be like right about now. Unless you're in organised crime those jail gaurds won't have much time to watch your back in there.

Haha so true Seedy, but its exciting, I guess your equivalent would be finding an Aussie in Kazakstan, if you lived in Kaxakstan for some odd reason.
