View Full Version : Diff info?
Hi guys
I wanna upgrade my diff on my VT II and was thinking putting some gears in it. Car is auto with standard gears.
Mods: Exhaust, extractors, mafless tune and OTRCAI.
I dont know much about diff so i was hoping i could get some advice before i upgrade.
Now do i have to buy a new LSD diff or can i get mine made into LSD?
Then what gears should i go for?
How much does this setup normally cost?
Also do i have get my car dynod again?
Cheers guys

I assume your car is therefore not an SS? I can't advise on whether it's best to get an LSD diff first then do the gears or whether yours can be made into LSD but from all I've read and one quote I got before I picked up a complete centre with the gears I wanted it seems somewhere around $1200 is the going price for a change of diff gears in one that's already LSD. That's with new gears, so you can save a bit if you can find some good second hand ones.
As for what gear you should go to - how long is a piece of string? What footy team do you barrack for? Who's your favourite actor? There are about as many opinions on gears as on any of those questions - it all comes down to what you want out of it. Do a search and you'll find lots of threads discussing the merits of 3.46 vs 3.73 vs 3.9 vs 4.11 even with no one right answer.
I don't think you need your car dynoed again but you will need your tuner to adjust the settings so the speedo/odo reads correctly with the new ratio.

Kris78's car went 13.6 with 3.08 gears, then 13.25 with 3.46.
3.9's have dropped her to 12.8 so far. What do you want to do with the car ?
