Here is my 2004 KX 500. Last of the big bore two stroke KX's. All stock except for +1 tooth on the countershaft sprocket and the black plastics using 2003 250 rear guard, easy mod just takes a little cutting. No MX for me, just dirt riding out in the hills. The old girl smokes 450's and 525's, top gear wheel stands at 80 mph.

Nice! I used to have an XR600 but that thing was a goddamn whale. Right now I'm looking for a good unmodified RMX250 (i'm too much of a pussy for a 500 :D

In the mid 90's my dad baught a new kx500 for my brother when the whole family used to race MX. It went through 3 engines during run in.

after the 2nd engine died, we got the dealer to come out and do the run-in the 3rd engine siezed as well. Put my brother straight of the kwaka's and made him a honda fan.

me, i kept with the kwaka's, last bike was a klx650 and raced Enduro's, heavy bastard to throw around compared to what i was racing, but when you have more torque & power it left them for dead.

are you taking about a crf450? I have a trx450r. They have the same motor as the crf450r. The top end is ment to be done every 100 hours.

its not to bad $$ either.... 300 for a wiseco piston/rings/clip and 70 for a gasket kit. If the piston is ok the rings are 70 od bucks from honda.

thats the one , the crf450x. Im not talking piston , im talking head as in 4 stroke & valves pulling through & wearing out in under 2000km from brand new. my bro has done a few now. its around a $1800 job all up. i know i wouldnt be impressed. Wont be covered under warranty either.

the 450's arent too bad, not as bad as the 250's....and even they are much better than in earlier model years

just make sure you check the valve clearances few months, get them adjusted when needed,

i used to have a CRF450 and i checked them every few months and had them adjusted once, rode every weekend and it never dropped a valve,

big bore 2 stroke of 4 strokes?

used to have a 4..

Son has one of the last yamaha 250 2 stroke MX bikes new was $10K. eats a soft compound mx tyre in 2 days riding, very quick.. most of his mates have 400-500 4 strokes and can't keep up with the 250. the 250 is very light and nimble, found the lightweight alloy rear cog had no teeth left a few weeks back, put a steel one on see if that lasts longer...apart from that no probs at all....

they still make the YZ250 and have not made any statements about stopping production in the next few years,

the 450's are dominating motocross now though
a couple of 2 strokes have qualified for the nationals or supercross in the past 2 years.
but i still love 250 2 strokes, ultra fun to ride.

maybe the last of the 2006 mdls left new then, his story so that maybe it...

4 are getting faster, and they only want 4's in racing eventually, less pollution or something i heard.

same here, still got a titanium rod in my lower right leg and screws. bad landing off a jump....

you must have had fun lifting the bike up that high onto the stand, doesn't appear to be a pump up type stand. maybe not as high as it looks...

yeah there is already very few 2 strokes racing,

bit of a shame, 2 strokes used to be cheaper to run, easier to work on and lots quieter

the YZ250 is a cool bike though, i hope he enjoys it, such a good handling bike

Used to own a KTM 500SX 2 stroke that was prepped for the Finke desert race. Monster port job, built to rev (revved like a 250) and just stupid power up top.

Was so easy to ride too. Idle up hills, etc.

Wasn't that easy to start with the kickstarter on the wrong side though!! :vpo: Lucky it started first kick every time. It used to vibrate a bit too!!

Nice IT, I had a 490L with a Answer muffler, cost $2200 in "84.
Buy a GSXR1K for $18000 fair enough, $11000 for a dirt bike that needs a top end rebuild half way through the season, I cant see the value. Call me old school.

Where are the photos of the KTM blasting through the desert at 100mph UT ?

Tip from me, if you go to hospital with an injury like a broken leg, when the doctor asks how you did it say playing footy......lots more sympathy(pethidine) than saying yeah I just end for ended my dirt bike.

I have never owned a big bore, but love 2 strokes and have ridden a few cr500s years ago on mx tracks they are insane. the four strokes have plenty of grunt, but give me 2 stroke to ride round a mx track for fun anyday. I don't think they will but long live the 2 strokes! here a few pics of my 2005 cr250.

Hehe....I didn't race it....I bought it off a guy who used to....and at the time he was 62 years old!! That was 10 years ago now.

I have photos of it but no digital ones. Wasn't much of a looker, but christ could it GO!!!

Idling around in 5th gear, give it a handful, and up on the back wheel with a huge rooster tail behind you, no clutch fanning.....just instant power! :D

I mourn the death of the big bore 2 stroke.....now all you have is all these 4 stroke techno wizardry bikes, with "nice manageable power"

My beasty is a 2000 Husky TE610, stripped down for Thumper nats with TC springs. Just had the engine rebuilt, builder said "For about $3000 we can push 100 hp out of this." Oh yeah, that would be fun in the snot...NOT. Needless to say, nice standard rebuild, silly power as it is, although it is cammed.
Had a chance to ride a TM400 not long ago, very nice bike. Then later the same day, TM 300 2 stroke, even better, absolutley beautiful in the tight stuff. Would love one, but apparently not great reliability. Anyone here had expericence with TM's?

100hp?????????

i think he was trying to stooge you,
the factory 450's used in the AMA nationals only put out approx 60hp, those bikes are worth silly amounts of money, and consist of much more modern technology.

that would be over double the stock power, and about 40% more than something like Kevin Windhams factory 450.

this is my 95 ktm, its a bit out dated now but can still keep up with most other bikes(excluding bikes like kx, cr 500), iv e ridden a 2002 kx 500 and i hated it, to unpredictable 63hp on that bike is bad:shock:. my ktm has about 56-58hp with the exhaust(white brothers), jetting and porting and goes great. ive had trail bikes all my life and this one is also due to sell soon, might go for a ktm 640 adventure next, anyone got one?

Here is my old girl a 99 XR 600 I bought to go fishing on while I was working up north in Karratha. I bought the 600 because of the famous reliability they have and it has never let me down. But it did put me down back on easter monday this year while I was helping a mate train for his upcomming enduro season. Came of the back doing about 70 odd going up a hill sandy bloody limestone all slippery then you hit a bit of hard packed shit and the power wheelie that was all good went all wrong.Ive ridden alot of bikes over the years on and off road and the big bore torque can bring you undone especially when your over confident and you get complacent and get lazy with technique. Now I have a limp because of a torn A C L so my advice to young fellas and old fellas is WEAR YOUR KNEE BRACES or buy some and do trail your brake when poppin wheelies because if you can't work for a month as a result of your stack it doesn't make your wife verry happy or sympathtic or get you anything while your on crutches . Sorry to get off topic but what I was getting to was the mate who i've been training with has the new TM 300 and what a machine the best suspension I have felt on any bike I have ridden. The power is awsome up top, bugger all down the bottom, with the pipe he is running but who rides a two stoke down low unless your climbing hills. Now thats daunting on this bike and also with his standard gearing we did some high speed trails in the pines near perth and I was smack on 150 and I had about 2kph on him and it took me about 10 seconds longer to hit 150 than him. I ve also got video footage of him at the Tumbelgum farm grass track races "ADB" going past 6 250's in one hit up the back strait awsome bike package.

Anyway GO THE BIG BORE 2 OR 4

Cheers Cam

First time I ever rode a big bore 2 stroke was a modded IT490 my mate raced around tracks in East Gippsland in the late '70s. Off the pipe, yea no worries :) - hit the powerband (particularly in the bottom 2 gears), and the thing was absolutely brutal. How the hell he raced it, and rode it through the hills behind the farm is beyond me. One of my my most enduring memories was watching him mono past me at 65mph when he gave my 360 Charger bit of a run on the road....

Me? I just wander around on an RM250. I'm probably going to sell it shortly, and look for something like an XR400. I'm getting too bloody old to be thrashing around on a MXer

maybe the additive worked, maybe you got a good one. who knows. i know the bro has done a couple more since my earlier replies. he has some pretty peeved of honda owners. honda customer service leaves alot to be desired in these situations. basically once any restrictors are removed ,bye , bye warranty. for those that dont know, these bikes come in with restrictors in the intake/exhaust & also the jetting is useless. all to meet our regulations, & most if not all shops remove them from new before pick up. if they didnt , your crf would go like a bucket of crap. catch 22 really. go the blue brand, no hassles in their 4 strokes any more.

The fella I ride with had one. He also had it de-restricted. Now he is a very good rider, and he sold it 3 months after buying it new. Now he rides a WR450. Guess it depends what you want to do with it. If you ride enduro(like us), I'd probably give it a miss. If moto-cross riding is you, not a bad bike(but there are much better out there). I rode it a few times and we drag raced it against my Husky 610. It was quicker in the mid range, but I'd pull it in and then leave it for dead, so there goes the big 2 stroke advantage. Also no engine braking down hill, so you'd have to feather the front brake down slimy hills(not fun). Old design to, I think Honda just relied on the, 'It's the biggest 2 stroke so of course people will buy it' theory.

But having said that, it wasn't a bad bike. It just didn't stand up to the newer 2 strokes and was left for dead by the big 4 strokes(ridability wise).

Hope that helps.

I took it out 2 weeks ago with some blokes from work, I have'nt rode dirt for 5 years since buying the harley, my last bike was a 2000 wr 400.but this 250 surprised the hell outa me, so light & powerful even the boys on the big bikes were amazed at how fast it was in the single tracks. then it took a few days to recover was bloody fun thoughhttp://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p98/blackbettyhsv/CRF250R009.jpg

Awhhhhh, that's okay. Speaking of top end, come and see me when you need some, the 610 has heaps. Oh, and bottom end to. And a long stroke, and ummmm, does 170 km/h with 52 tooth rear sprocket. Haha, but your right, it aint a 2 stroke. Oh yeah, I don't have to put oil in my fuel, but I guess that could be fun.

It's a pity that you don't live in Melbourne. That bike of yours is in very good nick.

Finally found and scanned the pics of my KTM, for those that are interested in big bores.

Its a 1986 model, with a 1990 front end (Marzocchi???)that I bought froma bike wrecker in Alice Springs, and I added 1995 model plastics and recovered the seat in the 1995 colour (I wanted to make it look like a modern bike). I rebuilt the motor and gearbox, clutch, new clutch cover, etc. I remember the piston was $400 alone or something stupid like that. Hardest bit of rebuilding the motor was setting "Dimension X" which was the height of the barrel. I'm still not totally sure what it was about, but I must have got it right because the thing started first kick every time after the rebuild (thank God for that, it was hard to kick over!) and it absolutely flew with the port work done to it! I think it was set up for top end power because the low end was not as powerful as some other KTM 500's I rode at the time. Still plenty, though. I wish I didn't sell it. Cost me 5k to build and I sold it 5 years later for $2800 :(

Right up my alley, raced dirt bikes for over 25 years had a ball, broke a lot of bones though, this is a photo of me in finke,CR 500 much money spent same bike Jason Hill rode,i was sponsering him at that stage,we checked the speed of these bikes with a police speed gun , 175kph in the sand.
People that would know ,the porting and squish band was done by small coil rewinds.

mate of mine had the last of the cr500's 2001 model i think or somwhere around there, but since then he has gone to the next level he has taken the cr 500 motor out of the old frame and put it into a crf frame 05 model, u think 500 2 strokes are bad enuf imagin it now with the light ally from better suspension and everything really, its not a stait fit either would be good if it was but never is.

few progress pics. more has been dne since these pics should be running in few weeks

Each to their own I guess but the 2001 CR500's were actually CR500E's and were street legal and VERY hard to come by. Resale of these bikes are huge, and they don't last long on the 2nd hand market.

There's no way in hell I would be messing with a rare bike like that.
