Hi all,
Ive always been a ford bloke and know them pretty much inside out.
I have decided its time for a change and im looking at buying either a vx 2 or vy Gen 3 with a 6 speed, thats basically my requirements.

Just wondering what there is to look out for with these cars, ive heard that some gen 3s burn oil was this fixed by vx-vy or is it all a myth, and typical issues they have with them that i can check when looking at the cars.

I hope im posting this in the right section

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Cheers,
Max

hey max, most oil issues were resolved after the series 1 gen 3 thats not to say that anything after wont use oil as holden do say that an ls1 will use atleast 1 litre inbetween the 10.000 services, great choice the vx or vy,just make sure u check the service history just for peice of mind, lots of good info on this site when your modding your car,all the guys in here are only to willing to help.enjoy:)

if going a VX, keep a check on the ABS module, they occasionally trigger the warning light on the dash.
VY's from memory had door lock actuators fail, dash clusters fail and radio antennas.

most of these problems will have been rectified by now.

happy purchasing

If its a manual - give the clutch a good workout & check for slippage. Gearbox can also be a bit notchy.

i think the diffs in both models have a tendancy to whine

vxII had revised pistons

vyII had another revision of the pistons

both unreal cars, you can't go wrong with either IMO

Good luck shopping around

thanks alot for the info guys ill keep ya posted what i get leaning towards vx at this stage a little cheaper.

tuff304 u mentioned something about pistons...another rumour ive heard is something called "piston slap" im not sure if this is more anti holden myths or a serious fault? is this why the pistons were revised?
how do you know if a car does this can u tell by the noise of the engine or...

thanks again for your help

G'day mate and welcome. You'll find all the info about things to look for in an LS1 right here.
I'm just curious though. What has led you over here to the dark side. I too am a Ford fan that has made the shift over. For me it is all about the engine. Ford just doesn't offer a V8 with the kind of flexibility that the LS1 has.

Afaik, most of the oil burning problems were made good by holden under warranty. So the chances of buying a oil burner on the second hand market are fairly slim. Btw, I used to be a ford boy/man too. I will be getting a VY SS in about 2 months if all goes to plan. XR6Ts and XR8s are nice cars but nothing turns heads like an SS.

Well ive owned 2 ELs, and an ED over the last 4 years, I loved my last el but after spending a bit of money on it i realised that unless i spend big dollars turbo etc its never gonna be as quick as i want.

In the price range im looking at under 20k there isnt a whole lot on the ford market im not a fan of the AU range and there is little around in the way of xr6t or xr8 in the ba range for under 20k. So what better time to experience a different car. Im not one of these people that hate fords or holdens so yea thats pretty much the reason.

So any info of this "piston slap" i got no idea what it is but ive heard people throwing this around when talking about gen 3's... is that just another problem that was fixed very early in the range?

Thanks for your help everyone now i know at least what to look out for.

The m6 shift is very average in the vy series, probably the vx series too. If you're planning to drive the car every day and/or enjoy rowing your manual box, I recommend looking for one with a gmm ripshift or put one in after.

Happy car hunting.

Thanks mate,

As for mods its still got a few months new car warranty on it so i might enjoy the drive of a nice quite comfy car for a while will be a nice change from my last car hahaha...

But i doubt itll last long ive already started hoarding parts even before i bought this car, ive got a full difillipo exhaust system sitting in the garage including, the extractors, high flow cats, and twin 2.5" exhaust, also have some ultra low springs and a few other bits and pieces...

As for other mods will have to wait and see how the money situation is.. i dont even know if calais got lsd  lol if not thatll be next on the cards for sure. Either way the 3.07 ratio doesnt really seem enough.
