Hey i ride a bit out on the farm, looking to get my learners license. Just wondering what the deal is with the motorcycles your allowed to ride when your on your L's and P's. I've had a quick skim over the bikes on the rta site. Is that all of them? Does anyone have any suggestions to some models of bikes around the $3000 bracket either road or trail bikes just for around town and what not.
Thanks in advance.

L s no bigger than 250 cc and P S I think is 400 cc as for good bikes depending on wether u want dirt a road id recomend a xr 250 bullet proof bike, ive got a 400 which i use in the bush,a 250 in excellent condition around the 4 to 6 years of age shouldnt set u back anymore than $3000.

Correct me if im wrong, but I thought the list on the RTA does not include 250's. the bikes on that list are all bikes above 250 that are still allowed to be riden on your L's.
So therefore you can ride almost all 250's plus the bikes on the list.

What model are the 250cc all purpose bikes for Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Suzuki?
I think ive got my mind on a road/trail bike for around $3000-4000 that i can ride around town and off road on the weekends. Just wondering what people think the best model is out of the 250's if there is much difference? and if there is a course that you can do before your L's, i know theres a one done in Wagga by the rta, is that all thats needed? I can ride pretty well, just need a bit of confidence because riding on the roads alot different to on the farm. Thats probably why an all purpose 250 is my safest bet so i can practice a bit more off road.

all 4 of the jap bikes are quite similar.. the cbr250rr is probably known for 1 of the more reliable and all rounder bike to get. zx2r i've ridden and i think is 1 of the faster 250s u'll find but parts would be harder to get if needed

Hi,
I've been riding for around 15 years and started off with a KLR 250, then went to bigger road bikes, ZX6,R1, and latest is SP2 Honda, to be honest if your trying to get used to riding on the road with traffic etc I would have to suggest you get a road bike, one of the Jap inports CBR250, ZX2, they are cheap and heaps of fun thru the tight corners. Due to them having better braking and handling capabilities they are easier to use if someone jumps out in front of you or hits the brakes hard you have a better chance of missing them. Keep in mind that you only have yours learners and P's for a short time and after you get used to the traffic and the thrill of being on the open road chances are you will want something with a bit more grunt, so keep resale value in mind, hope this helps, see you on the road!!
Jason.

hmmm im not sure what to do now. I thought i had my mind set on a trail/road bike but now i think ive been swayed to a road bike after reading everything on the forum and doing research. I must admit the road bike is much more glamorous. I'll have to go out and buy a motorcycle trader magazine see what the prices are, do some more research.
What are some of the popular L plate road models? I just want a cheapie because id be selling once i got my full license then upgrading.

You should check out some of the online traders such as bikesales or bikepoint.com, they have thousands of bikes to choose from (sorry probably make the decision even harder now!!)

Yea thanks alot :) Is the honda cbr 250rr learner legal? there was a 2002 model on bikesales i think for 3,000 'urgent sale' in melbourne looked in good nic too. What are the most popular learner legal bikes, still unsure. Too many choices :)

I know the CBR's are pretty popular and yes they are learner legal, there is another thread going which guys have posted what's legal and what's not which may help you in the legality side of things. $3000 sounds pretty good depending on K's and condition!
hi all,
im actually new to the forum, im going for my L's soon and dont have any idea what to look for
this has been a lot of help tho!
cheers

Just my experience
NSW rider - Went for L's last december. Did not get a bike till May, a few weeks before P's test. Got a 2nd hand ZZR-250 as I like fairing bikes. It was from a dealer for $4k. Also toke a CBR250 for a run which was more responsive but I have hesitations about buying a bike that is 17yrs old as my mechanical skills are limited and was not fussed about a super quick buick for first one, will wait for my CBR600.
Anyway, if you don't ride much before the test, then you may want to practice. Everything in the MOST test (NSW - see RTA website including what test entails) is at slow speed (either slow walk pace or 2 excercises for braking and swerve at 20-30k's) I failed first time as I clipped a cone on very last excercise which was immediate fail. There is no need to go faster than 22km's in these excercises. I also found the ZZR-250 was hard to get a tight circle for u-turn. Anyway 2nd time round I hired one of the test bikes which was a naked bike, much lighter and tighter turning circle. Passed easy.
This is a great forum for Bikes and experienced riders helping Learners (not taking away from LS1) http://www.#################/

Just hang on if you havnt bought a bike yet.
If you live in victoria they are talking about upping the power level to 650cc on your learners - as for some reason they want to do it on power to weight, and reckon the smaller bikes are not safe.

Bugger that dude. Wont happen till midway next year and even still, the 650cc bikes allowed are restricted and believe it or not, alot of the 250cc bikes will actually be quicker.
The arguement is that you can buy a 650cc bike, LAMS approved of course, then you wont have to upgrade when you are off your restrictions. Its crap. Half the fun of getting off restrictions is getting a nice big new shiny bike!!
By the time you wait for that, you could have gone out and got your Ps and been off restrictions before LAMS even comes into place here in VIC.
There are also loopholes in the current system that would allow you to ride a bigger bike and bypass restrictions. Depending on age and a few other factors.

Please share?
Im just going for my learners atm.. but im a uhh stocky guy. so a little bike would look stpid.
But ive heard good things about the new Honda CBR125R? even though its a little bike supposedly its pretty quick for the city cruising?
And nar i cant do that because im a P-plate car driver, so that means longer restrictions. Im 19 and 6 months, so yeah.

See this.....

That would be you on a CBR125 if youre "stocky". hahaha Ok if you wanna scoot in and outta traffic in the CBD but if you wanna go cruising, she is a bit small. The Hyosung GT250 or GT250R wouldnt be a bad bike for a bigger guy. Believe it or not, my old Hyo is actually much bigger than my new Kawasaki ZX10! I mean, ALOT bigger!!
I wont go into details with the "loophole" but unless youre over 30 it wont really apply to you. You also need to know someone who lives in NSW and wouldnt mind you "living there" for a while.......actually, do you know anyone in QLD??

QLD, WA, NSW, SA and NT :) lol all wouldnt mind me "living there"
i was thinking about a hyo..
or maybe an older NSR250?
i want a nice 250 or bigger that has the looks and goods for no more than 5-6k....
But just so i dont hi-jack makybe too much and the thread still help em out around 3k as well?
Theres some cheap bikes on ebay and wreckers but i dont know if you could trust them as far as you could throw the bike.
Thankyou :)

The NSR250 is a two stroke. Not ideal as a commuter. Great if you wanna pretend to be Valentino.......hehe
A Hyosung will set you back around $4-5k for one with low kms. They will still most likely have factory warranty too. Pretty hard to beat in my book.
I've got myself a Hyosung GV-650 (been riding for 20 years...) It's learner legal in NSW, but has more power and less weight (and torque..) than a Harley :)
If you like cruisers I can highly recommend it. I do not agree that once you get off L/P's you need have a massive engine, as I am more than happy with this bike and have been riding since I could get my bike licence 20 years ago :)
For a beginner tho I do recommend a 250 anyhow, as it helps you to come to terms with power delivery, brakes etc. If you ride on the farm tho, you really have a base level of experience already!
