Just went down to Holden with the intention of getting a new set of plugs and leads in an attempt to cure the rough idle.

Yes sir the plugs are $25 each and the leads are $35 each.

$25 x 8 = $200
$35 x 8 = $280

For a grand total of $480 !!!!!!

I couldnt believe it so I walked around to the Service Dept and booked it in to get fixed under warranty hahaha Worth a try... I did try to get it fixed at another dealer and was told the rough idle is normal. Now if this was a 1970s Kingswood that answer would be acceptable but this is a modern car that should idle smooth as silk.

Ive also told them to look at the backlash that the same "other" dealer said wasnt there and a problem with the CD player eating CDs. I'll let you know how I go.

Fingers crossed.

Why on earth would you want genuine holden plugs and leads?

The aftermarket alternatives are cheaper (and better)

I thought everyone said the aftermarket leads were crap and the stock leads were better.

Well so far Ive always used genuine parts so figured Id keep doing it till I found out how much these cost.

Which ones should I use?

Yeah I read that as well (I did use the search function :D)

Just use NGK BPR6EF-15's. Very common among us here and they are cheap at about $20-25 a set. You just have to change them more regularly. OEM leads are good too. A mate uses MSD's and my standard ones have a lower resistance

Find someone who works for holden to get them for you, will be a huge difference.
Maybe offer a slab or bottle to an apprentice spare parts guy for his help?
Used to work for me yrs ago, saved a few hundred on headlights and bits and pieces as the markup is farkn ridiculous.

Are these the VYII-on red leads Dickie?
Is there any difference between the red and black leads?

Black leads are discontinued. Red only now, in single or a set.

These are the regular copper core plugs.

yes that is correct

gee funny how the only problems i had were with the stock leads,60000ks with magnacor not one problem.

Yep, the 'aftermarket - custom made' set of leads with thinner plug boots that do not contact the extractors that I've had in for 25,000k's, have performed faultlessly. The full set cost me $115.

I had been quoted $240 for a genuine set - bugger that for a joke.

And yep, the NGK BPR6EF plugs are cheap and work well.

Cheers,

Macca

Under $120 for a set of NGK BPR6EFIX-15 iridium spark plugs. Much better spark plugs than the coppers and last nearly as long as the NGK Platinums(or about 60,000km's longer than the Holden supplied platinums )

Interesting Macca, I found the same thing when I fitted the DiFillipo headers, the front plug lead boot on both sides touched solidly on the header tubes.

I fitted the Splitfire leads :hide: and ironically despite the poor rep they've been OK. OEM leads are good and another plug worth trying is the NGK-TR6 plugs, slighly dearer than the NGK BPR6EF-15 but also a slightly colder plug.

Sorry yes the change point is VY1 / VY2
Microcat lists Iridium for VY2 and VZ. Platinum for VT to VY1

Concur with Macca, standard plugs are great and work just as well as the iridium or pallidium alternatives - unless your looking to not change the plugs for 80K km or so were the low reactivity of these metals stops the excessive build up of carbon.

Testing that we conducted on two stoke racing engines over a very wide range of plugs ranging from standar NGK EG plugs to the very exotic purpose built GP plugs should no appreciable difference in performance in dyno testing. However we did find that due to the exotic plugs having a much smaller electode there was irregular burn patterns on the top of pistons (we think because of the reduced surface area for the spark to arc around) and they were more suspectible to wet fouling. The standard plugs seemed to hold a more consistent, easier to read tune as well. Not directly relevant to an LS1 but I think the exercise shows transferable results.

Magnecor make excellent plugs leads. A little expensive but you should never need to change them for the useful life of the car.

Go ngk plugs and a good set of aftermarket leads from any reputable speed shop

I tuned a VX last week with MSD packs and leads. The car was a pain in the arse to get the timing table right. I get better results from stock packs.

Just to clarify, I own a VYII and when last at Holden was told by the spare parts guy to just buy the platinum plugs as they are considerably cheaper and last just as long.

As it is a VYII, I understand it is meant to have the Iridium plugs.

Has anyone done this with there VYII or VZ?

Is there much difference in these plugs, i.e. will the car loose performance, or will it damage the computer/electricals?
