View Full Version : Why bother LS1 mods....

I have been looking through the forum a reading many of the threads posted and have been enjoying all of them. I could spend all day in here.... :D So for my first post in this forum, second post overall(Tar pit was first) I thought I would make it a good one.
What caught most of my attention is the threads about modifying the LS1 GenIII engines, most say forced induction(Blower/Turbo) is the way to go.... and seriously this is what I will probably do to my Clubbie.
BUT... according to some "Mechanics"... outside of this forum... "QUOTE: The LS1 GenIII is overall a great engine out of the box, but has little potential. I reckon they're junk - they're disposable engines."
Most go on justifying the comment above with things like this below:-
1). Conrods have all cracked big-end caps so they can align them when fitting. So you cannot re-size the originals, you need new ones that you can resize.
2). Aluminium block means all bolts are torque to yield. So if you are building a performance LS1 you need to helicoil the bolt threads to run a decent fastener. Helocoils are not cheap.
3). Cylinder liners are tooooooo thin so almost no machining is possible.
4). Heads are not strong enough for Blower/Turbo of TTurbo's and need stronger valves & springs. And if you do this, then you need to look at fuel rails, fuel pump and injector upgrades depending on what your choice of induction is.
5). And wait for this one....... Even the ECU relearns there settings back to standard so "DON'T waste your time with a tune" as the gains are temporary.
The article(s) go on and on and to tell you all the truth I would not have posted this up on this forum. BUT I am getting this info from many sources like here in Australia(Melbourne & Adelaide mostly), USA, even UAE where HSV does pretty good in that market. Also, after reading the C4B thread about spitting out cam, oil consumption/usage, piston slap, springs failing in the heads along with stuff like ECU relearning to standard.
What’s the use of doing anything to the internals of the motor when they are throw away items? Just get a crate motor and slap on a blower/Turbo or TTurbo and exhaust and you are done.
Sorry, I might be a little older than most here... but give me an old fashion cast iron SB Chevy and you can keep the LS1/LS2/LS6 engines in that case.
OR... am I being taken for a ride and just worrying about nothing or taking things out of context.

Some mechanics would think a dogshit sandwich taste good.
Ls1.com.au is living proof that the LS1's are excellent engines and can take modifications very well.

A decent LSx edit wont return to its factory tune unless someone flashes it back to its original tune.

just direct these internet mechanics to the numerous cars on this forum alone that are running reliably every day in city traffic and go run low quarter mile times on stock engines with bolt on super/turbo charged kits. Nothing destroys gossip better than physical facts.

HSV271.
What mechanic filled you with that rubbish?
Everything you've mentioned above is based upon making an LS1 more performance oriented.
What decent mechanic in their right mind would use the stock OE equipment if they were serious about a performance motor?
It has been pretty well proven by some of the "fast' players here runnign FI that you dont need to go crazy to have a super reliable tough and powerful LSx engine.
Point 1 is the only half accurate point. Yes they are sintered metal conrods that shouldnt be reused if resizing is needed.
All the other points are pure fiction.

i reckon that the info you have been given would apply to any motor that you are modifying. Also the engines have not been built with turbos or blowers in mind, they usually appear after the engine hits the roads.

I would say this as well... I have been in the game of modifying cars since my first HQ GTS350 Monaro I bought in 1984.
BUT, the write-ups were specifically for the Aussie LS1 and not general engine stuff.

sadly you've been grossly missinformed. sometimes google isn't your best friend ;)
1). Conrods have all cracked big-end caps so they can align them when fitting. So you cannot re-size the originals, you need new ones that you can resize.
stock rods with ARP bolts are used for some 10s cars, they don't need to be resized in the process
2). Aluminium block means all bolts are torque to yield. So if you are building a performance LS1 you need to helicoil the bolt threads to run a decent fastener. Helocoils are not cheap.
crap
3). Cylinder liners are tooooooo thin so almost no machining is possible.
crap, also they rarely need machining unless going o/s pistons, then still no problems, or you would probably go to an iron block block at same time anyway
4). Heads are not strong enough for Blower/Turbo of TTurbo's and need stronger valves & springs. And if you do this, then you need to look at fuel rails, fuel pump and injector upgrades depending on what your choice of induction is.
heads are fine and flow well enough for some insane powered forced induction cars and even low 11s cam only cars. valve spring replacement is one of the first performance mods to do when modifying a ls1 (& is a recognised weak point), but at $280 for a set of PSI springs it's not exactly expensive. stock fuel pump and injectors are fine until very low 11s on the strip. either way not exactly difficult to upgrade if need to be.
5). And wait for this one....... Even the ECU relearns there settings back to standard so "DON'T waste your time with a tune" as the gains are temporary.
utter crap, once an edit has been performed it will not go back to standard unless unlocked and reflashed by a tuner (even holden can't do it, unless they replace the ECU)
The article(s) go on and on and to tell you all the truth I would not have posted this up on this forum. BUT I am getting this info from many sources like here in Australia(Melbourne & Adelaide mostly), USA, even UAE where HSV does pretty good in that market. What’s the use of doing anything to the internals of the motor when they are throw away items? Just get a crate motor and slap on a blower/Turbo or TTurbo and exhaust and you are done. true, that a crate ls1 can be had for a $3-4k or ls2 for $5-6k
Sorry, I might be a little older than most here... but give me an old fashion cast iron SB Chevy and you can keep the LS1/LS2/LS6 engines in that case.
you got to be kidding, how many engines with basic bolt-ons can propel a big family sedan into the mid 11's without touching the internals or by strapping on a blower run into the 10's. both being able to be driven day in day out and idle like a normal car!!!
OR... am I being taken for a ride and just worrying about nothing or taking things out of context.

Mate the amount of modded cars on here prove all that wrong...
Lets be straight for a sec, if you put a turbo/blower on a stock engine and be stupid with it, and i mean put WAY to much boost into it, say byebye.
If you want that much boost you strengthen the internals.
But look at seedys ride, stock internals, single 3" exhaust (correct me if im wrong) and its making serious power! key thing in his post, SAFE TUNE
For to say these engines are disposable is stupid, you can get serious power out of them if you just clear up the intake/exhaust and fix the tune to suite. The tune will NEVER revert back to standard, NEVER. The standard tune is no longer there, so it is IMPOSSIBLE. That statement alone proves these people spinning these stories havent the slightest clue about the LSx department. Clearly not a single experience in this area.
And besides, if all this wasnt true, and if these motors were up2 it, do you think one of our members would have had his BRAND NEW VE CLUBSPORT delivered straight from the dealer to a workshop (im talking predelivery hasnt even been carried out yet) to have a twin turbo setup installed with 0Km on the clock?? Now that is trust in what has been proven here over the years with experiences workshops and tuners!
If you want to go all out, yes the internals need work, same with any other engine out there, but for 350rwkw on stock internals with a safe tune, thats pretty decent stock equipment they have provided ey?
Only thing needing attention is the valve springs ...
what a crock of shit you got fed....
Proven facts on these engines no myths just facts what more to say....

personally of all the guys i know who have LSX powered cars and utes only two have ever experianced problems...
one guy broke a synchro ring in his T56 box - i think it was a woopsy shift at the drags
and me... i've killed my auto box - i have no second gear - personally i am alllllll to blame... pure ABUSE, holding it in 1st and 2nd gears all the time, too many burnouts and i think i just fried the box... it was always going to happen
but engines... i don't even know anyone personally thats had an oil burner yet!!!

Great response as far as I am concerned, so a BIG Thanks to you all... all of you have set my mind at ease.... phew!!!
As stated previously... I am old from the school of modifying cars and up till a few months ago my pride and joy was my company car. I have left the company and now that it is mine.... well you all know the post/thread above regarding my concerns.
In all honesty, the internet can be it's own worst nightmare/enemy when it come to negative information. And there are plenty of mechanics out there that are only out for a quick buck(I will not name names, that's unfair to the mechanics who write this shite up and could have changed there opinions now),
So again a BIG THANKS for pointing me in the right direction, it's appreciated.....
BTW - The car is with Sonny @ Marranos today for brakes upgrade, only 4spot'ers :( . I know but hey, I only got them for $2K + my old exhaust :D  :smilesandbanana:. I think I got the better deal from that.

My daily driver and family car is a VY SV8. Was doing around 195rwkw on the dyno when I bought it 2nd hand (all stock). Got it cheap so I thought I spend a few $$ on making sound more like a V8 :).
Have modified cold-air intake, 2.5" dual DiFilipo exhaust and edit (all done by the mighty boys at GenTech) and now does 235rwkw. Feels more responsive to drive, especially in lower revs, and sounds great.

At least he can enjoy it on the track.
B***dy Melbourne peaktime is extending in some places I could even walk faster, even ma little V6 is wasted for 98% of the time as you just can not use all the power available in traffic.
Maybe if petrol went to $10.00 a litre it may free the roads up a bit.
Shock!
Believe it for myself it would be worth it - I would propably upgrade as I would be able to enjoy driving like it used to be and make use of some real HP. Gees I dream of the 70's congestion.
(Remember the 70's when the fuel strike was on and our family was still motoring thanks to a work supply, It was the quickest trip accross melbourne with a white coloured exhaust after - good sign of perfectly adjusted carburettor/timming on leaded after a hard run) Those were the good old days.

I suppose you could look back over the last 50 years at the family of US-based and Australia-based GM motors and I cannot really think of one of all those production engines that has not been capable of significant perfomance gains.
The V8s out of the US surely have been amazing. The SBC is an amazing template for NASCAR, Sppedway and Drags engines.
The grey and red motors of Australia except for that pathetic 4 cylinder Starfire have been hotted up to the limits.
And the LS1+ family is a remarkable group of reliable and strong production engines.

in my opinion the ls1/ls2 engine is great. only minor servicing is required and the potential is certainly there. there isnt many cam upgrade only engines (in everyday production cars) that can produce over 500hp. I did a cam and head upgrade on my clubby a few months ago. the motor had 40 000km so i pulled it out stripped and inspected everything and there was nothing wrong all measurements were well in spec. yes the bolts are mostly torque to yeild but i used arp fasteners (pretty certain they are a good bolt) and didnt have to use any helicoils. Also i wouldnt bother with a tune it is pointless, it only improves your allround fuel economy, improves your power and increase low down torque massively. also the tune stays in the computer

I think you could class just about any mechanical device as disposable , if it has parts that wear they are going to wear out one day .
The GM small block was (and still is) well supported by both the aftermarket parts manufacturers and GM as is the LS1/L76/L98.... and the standard electronics (PCM) is more than capable of controlling it , what more could you want in a mass produced car .

I think it is all about sensible modding. Common sense, eg 30psi through a stock botom end or 7k+ rpm on stock valve gear. Know what you want out of a motor and mod accordingly. As has been mentioned in this thread before this is not a LSx only issue all engines fall into this category.

454 cubes of LS1... wheelspin in 1st..... 2nd..... and 3rd all they way up the street, and when it did hook up it went like a fighter jet.
I was very impressed, and almost considering the $25000 price tag, but anyway they are agood engine..or we areall just fools being taken for a ride??

I see you're visiting Sonny at Marrano's (good choice!). When you're there ask him about all the problems i've had (it will be a short conversation... doesn't take long to say none!)
My car was turbocharged at 58,000 km, last Thursday (coming back from a track day at Wakefield Park) it clicked over 100,000 km, so 42,000 km since it was turbo'd.
Yes it has stronger valve springs, and yes it has a 'built' auto trans, and yes it has a complete 'after market' fuel system. And yes it has run 11.1 @ 124 mph quarter mile amnd makes 500 rwHp.
Sonny tuned it nearly a year ago now, and the tune hasn't been touched since.

Hhahahahaha... just yesterday I was taken for a drive in a VY Clubsport.. Granted it was a stroker engine but without the forced induction like they apparently need.. and this thing went like a firecracker in a tin box....
ITS A CONSPIRACY!!!
Hahahaha:confused::confused:
I like the sound of that. I assume the 25 G's is just for the motor though. Probably at least 10 or more like 15 G's to finish it off.
A 454 in your Clubby would be a damn fine combo.

I guess this is where the OP gaining the info from a fair bit seems to have changed in 6 years of performance tuning.....
Hey Cashie, actually this was NOT the article.... so there are more. Wow this one does not do any favours for the LS1.
HHHMMMMMMMMM Not good, but hey I am happy with all the feedback so far and my mind is at ease.
And to all of you, thanks for the input.
