Hi All
I have just replaced the backboxes on my R8and it sounds (on the outside how a V8 should, its not to loud but does have the rumble, a little pop and crackle on lift off and jsu a nice sound when you ae on it. So all good on the outside, HOWEVER on the inside as soon as you get in the 1500-2000 rpm range the interior starts to buzz and drone.
I noticed this very veryslightly on the standard back boxes but now its just driving me insane, as its an auto it spends a heap on time in this rev range as Im in town 95% of the time. New boxes are stainless wth mild steel piping, they do look well made (Coby) and have a single outlet into twin tips. Any ideas how to cure this? The muffler shop are happy to replace but I do love the sound on the outside lol.

Cheers Jay

Go the di-fillipo 2 1/2 cat back. Got it on my gts auto & its the best sound for all rev ranges no drone at all. The crackle on down revs is awsome . Cant wait to hear it when it comes back blown at the end of the week.

Did you make any power with the Di-Fillipo catback ?

Problem is Im in Auckland, and if I do have problem with it its long way to send it back. Im going to have to put the originals back on as the drone and high pitched buzz is giving me serious headache problems, gutted as the car sounds so god from outside

From what has been posted in the forum all of the replacement VE rear mufflers, whether they be custom, HM, Lukey or whatever, will drone to some degree in the 1800-2000rpm range. It seems that to eliminate drone you need a whole catback section to replace the stock front/centre mufflers. And even then some catbacks still drone.
I had some custom rear mufflers made up after I got sick of waiting for some off-the-shelf ones to arrive. Initially the drone was annoying but I think it has improved heaps since I put some km on it. Maybe needed a bit of carbon to build up or something. And maybe I have just got used to the sound a bit too??? But no doubt it has improved.
One day I'll chuck a twin 3" full system on it when the mods reach a power level that requires it.

I had the rear mufflers chopped off for a while, and it wasnt so bad as i had lived with a very serious exhuast on my VY that resembled a V8 supercar...

I have been through a few diffrent exhausts over the years, and i can say that the di-fillipo is the best i have been envolved with, almost no drone, great sound, no dramas...

Mate, even if you are in NZ, get it shipped over. If you have enough $$$, get the full dual 3" with high flow cats and extractors :eyes:

Nice system and If I was going to be modding it I would be in like flynn lol but I'm really only after a better sound to be honest. I ve done my share of modding in the past and just want to keep this one fairly standard bar a better exhaust note, maybe a cold air intake and lowering it by 35 -50mm.
I had black tints done last week and against the red paint it really looks good!!

How come Audi and VW can have an awesome sounding V8 straight from the showroom? my wifes X5 4.4 has a not bad sound and way better than the HSV, whats the problem getting a little more sound on the outside of the car as standard?

I've just got back from a drive in a VE R8 6m which has just had the X Force twin 2.5" catback fitted.

Nice sounding system, farkall drone and back burble, but too quiet for me. I believe X Force have have two versions - Low Volume and High Volume. This one was the high volume with only one single resonator... The low volume one must be really quiet then...

If the headers and cats would louden it up then I'd like it, but from that drive the twin 3" note sounds like the way to go ..... for me

last week i was "stuck in my ways" when i said the 3" was the go and i was gonna put it on and you said that 2.5" was more than enough for you john.....now 3" is the way to go :hmmm:

anyway back on topic.
mate if you want a nice sound without spending big money a local exhaust shop will probably make you up a custom cat back for pretty cheap.
i got quote $1000 for a custom hand made catback with some lukey mufflers and tips.

I only said that now because I didn't get a woody with the X Force 2.5" system.... I want a nice "loudish" note, not sedate.

My rear pipes sound heaps better then the X Force (albeit with the drone and back burble). I suppose thats the price you pay to cut out the drone and back burble, the exhaust note is quieter....

I thought that X Force was a Cheaper option for an Exhaust not a pricie one is that right or is it more expensive than others?

But don't go thinking just cause it is cheaper it is inferior as it is good bang for your buck, the saying more expensive is always better does not always apply ;)

At least if you don't really like it you only loose a couple of grand instead of several..

I done the same as vegts, put it on my clubby, but I cut out the middle box just the 2 up the back, makes it a bit louder, the dude at pedders liked it he got the same on his. no droning, quiet on the highway, but when you boot people look to see whats coming. I had 4 different systems on my vx clubby, b4 I got what I wanted, this time I met a bloke in berwick to listen to his & was convinced straight away,so save your pennys freight it over & cut out the middle muffler, trust me you wont be dissapointed

I have been looking at the xforce system in stainless for $900 over here, this I think is the quiet system as there is a center box fitted. Quality LOOKS alright but have heard they are prone to cracking, any feedback on this?

Im hoping to hear one on an auto SS V in the next few days, hopefully luder than stock but with no droning as to be honest fellas and felleses I dont want to spend 3-5 k to make the car a bit louder!
