Hi all,

I've been reading the forums for a while and am now finally in a situation where I'm seriously looking for a new (second hand :)) car.

I've left the old VL up in Newcastle and now need something for Melbourne, and that something is going to be some type of LS1 Commodore.

I started telling myself my limit was $15000 and have seen some nice VT-VX's around BUT after checking out the VY's I personally think there a big upgrade in both externally and inside. I've been sussing out the VY's and now pushed my max limit up to $20000 (that is on road).

For sub $20K it looks like I will realistically be looking at a SV8 VY series I, all the info I've put together I've thrown in my personal WIKI (yeah yeah guess what I do for a living) roguenetwork.com:8080/display/CARS/What+I%27m+after

I'm after some advice from people who are in or have been in my situation, for around $18K from what I've read I should be able to pick up a good SV8 but most look to be $20K+. I'm going to start checking out some local Melbourne SV8's and hope they will drop at $2-3K off their asking price when they see I'm serious.

I have found one VY SV8 for $17500 but it has 159000 ks, mostly hwy but still alot more than I feel comfortable with.

Anyway any advice on auctions/private sales in Melbourne and purchasing a VY for sub $20K will be appreciated.

Yeah, did alot of looking around and saw sine buce VT-VX SS's but if for that little bit extra I can get a VY LS1 I'm going for it.

Other thing is the VT shape never did grab me, where as the VY shape has really grown on me.

Have you looked into some of the government auctions for the ex cop cars?

Not really up on the auction scene, if anyone knows or has had some experience with the Melbourne auctions I'll be keen to here about it.

Not sure on the ex-cop cars, after a manual and I'm under the impression all the VZ onwards are autos.. if I could get a manual though I'd be interested!!

Shop around and you will find the right car for sub $20,000. I sold my SV8 around two months ago for $20,000. It was a manual with 18's, difillipo cat back, G&D intake, tint, new diff and lots more. It had 86,000 kays on the clock and it was dynoed at 225RWKW. Car was in excellent condition and very nice to drive.

Cheers,

Tim.

I've been checking carsales alot of late, and I can tell you this between 18-21k you will get a mint VX II SS in auto or manual with leather and low K's.
To get the same VY SS in series I or II you have to pay 27+.
Not sure about the SV8's though. If I were you I would go for the VX SS

Yeah the VY SS is going to be around mid 20s and higher.. well above my price range.

Seeing a few real nice VY Series I & II SV8's though, there's a Series 2 SV8 in Newcastle for ~$21K which looks pretty nice. Assuming it didn't get flooded last weekend!!

Just in that looking and testing the waters phase though... would be spewing if I rushed out and grabbed something I thought looked good now and then saw something like Timson's car..

Sounds like a beast. Starting to wonder where I really should be spending a bit more!

Ideally I'd love to be about to pickup a VYSS manual for around $23 with a few mods (CAI, exhaust..) but I think a SV8 manual with a few mods is more like it for a around $20K.

The differences between the SV8 and SS don't seem to be huge anyway:

better seats (SV8 has exec seats)
SS Body Kit
climate control (series 2 only??)
better resale?!?

Main thing I'd like from the SS extra would be the better seats, I've just got to keep looking around, I may yet find that VY SS!!

Main thing that put me off the SV8 over the SS was that the SV8 to me was a up spec exec..

I know to many that have bought an SV8 only to mod them out to look like and SS..

I really like the SS dash.. stitched seats.. slightly bolstered differently?.. full ss spoiler kit.. side airbags and full electrics... deeper front bumper with driving lights.. and better grille imo.. l like the ss's rear wing. wider and has black under it.. colour coded body/mirrors.. SS badging.. and SS alloy pedals.. i new if i went with a cheaper priced Sv8 i would be wanting the ss not long after buying the sv8.. SS also has the 18's standard.. and series 1 has spare 18' in the boot too

not everyone feels this way how ever :)..

I have seen some VY SS's going for lower 20k range in the past.. keep looking :).. oh and slightly higer k's if country k's isnt always a bad thing either.. i bought mine with 103,600 country ks on mine in nov 2005.. up to 124,000 now :) and running sweet as!

good luck

If you are keeping an eye on the paper, there's been a VY SV8 (black?) in the Age for a couple of weeks - deceased estate - that as dropped to high teens, around 50Kkm I think. SS's seem to go for around $3K more than equiv SV8's if the seller is being realistic.

Mate plenty around for under $20g. There was an SV8 with 65k in Melbourne not long ago for $17 500. Alot harder to find in QLD unless you are M12.

I just picked up a mint VX SS with leather, 90k, wheels for $16 500. Just pays to be patient.
