Hey All,
Like the topic states, as soon as the Z is sold, ill be buying a VE SS or a XR6T.. need 4 doors...
What are the For's and Against for the SS.. Ive read that they are heavy on the juice, other than that, what other feedback can you guys give me...

Cheers..

they are as heavy on the juice as heavy as your right foot is and also depending on your driving conditions...both are cars with a fair amount of power and will drink if you drive them hard

put it this way if you get the XR6T you are already slower than the SS when both are in stock form....well even with the XR6T having a exhaust...theory proven ;)
and i know the ford boys will come in and say can get more poke out of the XR6T with little mods..which is true.

but mate go out and drive both...then decide..
the VE is a new generation car and is leaps and bounds ahead of the previous commodores and also it makes the current BF fords look and feel outdated too.

or wait for the new ford to come out if you can wait and see what that has to offer

personal preference at the end of the day

What he said^^^^ the VE is a brand new developement the XR6 is about to be an old model so resale will drop quickly and you can't beat that V8 rumble.

Just be carefull as kids with footy's seem to dent the VE SS's.

I believe Wheels recently tested a GTS and an F6 (same size motors as SS and XR6 turbo but in different states of tune). Over the course of the test the GTS actually returned better fuel consumption than the F6. Both cars would have been driven in almost identical conditions (i.e city, highway & acceleration runs) so overall in daily driving you would expect the GTS (or SS) to be as good if not better than an F6 or XR6 turbo in regards to fuel use.

If you worried about performance great performance which is so cheap its almost free, $2800 for a proven 12 second VE! >

If your on the fence, the best thing to do is go and drive an XR6T and drive the VE SS/V, I think you will make up your mind within about 100m from the holden dealership ;)

This is a question that's been asked before a few times. Have a read of this post http://www.ls1.com.au/forum/showthread.php?t=70913 for some pretty comprehensive replies.

Like you, I moved up from a smaller car. In short, the pluses are the straight line performance out of the box and the refinement of the VE. As Carl pointed out, with some minor tweaks the VE can produce some awesome times. The minus is the kerb weight. You'll really notice it coming from a lighter, nimbler car, especially when you punt it through some twisties. Having said that, the other big car I looked at before buying the VE was the XR6T and there's just no comparison as far as handling is concerned - the VE is significantly better.

Don't worry too much about fuel. You wouldn't be buying a performance car if you were genuinely worried about it and the VE is remarkably good for such a heavy car with this much grunt.

I can't believe it...you're doing the opposite to what I'm doing. I had a VZ SS and now I'm switching to the 350Z, though my Z has not been delivered yet.

My advice to you in making the switch is to be mindful that the SS is a great car but you may be shocked by its proportions. It is afterall, a large sedan designed to carry families.

Holden have done a great job to make it boogie, but it is compromised when compared tot he Zed, which was designed with one purposes in mind - to carve up winding mountain passes.

As far as economy goes, well my SSV with 1600km on the tank returned a figure of 10.1 L/100km for a 40 km drive i did this morning - not bad for a 6 litre V8 that is still new and tight (ish). That was with some freeway and some stop start traffic..

To make power - you need fuel. The more power - the more fuel. Pretty simple equation.. Light footed = fuel efficient, heavy footed = more smiles and of course more fuel... ;)

Caprice, you have good taste in cars... The 350z certainly is a fantastic car, ive enjoyed driving it the last 3 years, and will be sad when it goes. I used to have a VT before, so i know the handling of the Commo willl be far less superior to that of a 350z, which can be compared to a go-cart when it comes to handling. The Z is fantastic, as you stated, when it comes to curves and winding roads. Having taken the Clyde and Brown mountains to the south coast on many occasions, I think its fair to say i have never been challenged by a V8 when it came to performance in such conditions.. There performance in a straight line however is less that impressive, howvere Nissan's claimed top speed of 291.6km/h for the 6 speed manual is nothing to be sneezed at..

Bottom line is im at the age now where i need 4 doors, and i dont want to go backwards in terms of performance (all round), therefore the VE SS caught my eye.. Good luck with ur Z, no doubt your getting the 07 230kw, which is more powerful than my 04, yet is heavier.. Nissan kinda f'd up if you ask me..

WORKING IN A HOLDEN DEALERSHIP THE FUEL ECONOMY VARIES SO MUCH IT SUPRISES ALL OF US HERE. BUT ONE SURE WAY OF GETTING THE FUEL ECONOMY:woohoo:, NOT SO MUCH DOWN AS THAT DEPENDS ON YOUR DRIVING STYLE, IS TO GET CAI AND FREE UP THE EXHAUST THEN AN EDIT :)

BUY THE VE

hey bud, i switched from a Z to a Typhoon about a year and abit ago and dont regret a thing !!!
The phoon is hands down a much quicker car than my old Z with a lot more potential - one of the main reasons i sold the Z was because to get anymore power i'd need to call APS and write a $15k cheque for a TT kit haha..
I had kinetix hi-flow cats, JWT popcharger and hi-tech cat back exhaust on my z so it sounded nice but didnt quite have the go

Compared to the Z the phoon (and an SS, xr8 etc) will be like Oliver Reed in the drinking stakes.. but a light right foot helps a lot.

like a lot of people have said, the VE is the newer and arguably better platform, but if you aren't planning on spending too much on mods then the XR6T + $400 injectors + $1200 EDIT/Tune will see close to 300rwkw with plenty more on tap.
If you have deep pockets then i reckon go for an SS plus a GenTT kit, not sure what the bucks would be but close to $12-14k for a fully engineered, tuned, fuel systemed, intercooled and installed setuP???

or if you have the time wait for the Orion to be released because i have a feeling there will be something special in the pipeline..

I agree, Commodores are big ass 4 door cars... but... while the Zed may appeal to one person more for carving up windy mountain roads, i will still put $100 on the VE SS taking the win over a 5km stretch of road...

All this talk about mid corner speed makes me wonder why motor dont do a 'mid corner speed test' on every car over a couple of diffrent radius's on a specified surface... 30m and 100m radius circle for ever car... I'd put money on the EVO VIII for a win

Has anyone got a 'published' lap time for a stock standard Zed at Wakefeild or Eastern Creek that we can compare with a VE SS?

Clearly they are 2 different cars, designed for different road conditions... The Z has its advantages, as does the SS, EVO, WRX etc etc etc etc etc... what is the SS top speed, if your going to place $100 over a 5km race, ud wanna make sure its quicker that 291.6km/h, as reported by Nissan, apparently the Autos are slightly quicker.. :)

Mmmm, Brown Mountain. One of the great drives in NSW. The run from Pambula to Bombala is awesome as well.

In terms of commited driving in these conditions, the Z would be the better car. It gives you better levels of feedback, which means you feel more comfortable pushing it towards its limits. Having said that, I reckon a VE SS would be quicker to the top of the mountain. It's quite a bit quicker in a straight line and not that much slower even in the tighter bends. In fact, one of the things that made me look at the VE in the first place was its lap times around Oran Park's North Circuit (in Motor's Bang for Your Buck issue). Anyone who's driven there knows how tight it is and from memory, the VE was 0.1 behind the Evo. Anyone got that handy to confirm? That would put it a bit in front of the Z.

It'd be too hard to do to be practical. You'd be amazed how much difference there is in terms of grip with different track temperatures. I'm sure you've noticed taking your car around Wakefield. On top of that, there's too many other variables, like relative humidity, track surface (amount of rubber, etc) and so on.

EVO VIII, MY06 STI or Lotus Exige is where I'd have my money.

ROFL yeh i was the same with the Z - looked great, handled great but one day i just sorta got over it??? maybe i had a quick early mid life crisis at 27 hahah

Theres lots of rumours/speculation about Orion some of which are so far fetched its beyond a joke, but the way i look at it is Ford released the Typhoon which after a couple of hiccups pretty well dominated everything at its price point (and pre-VE) in terms of out of the box performance and cheap modability, and even now against a muuuch newer and totally revised and a bit more exxy VE GTS it still holds up pretty well.

So IF Orion is a big step up from the BA/BF platform, one can only hope/think/wish that the new Phoon is another step above that again.. but time will tell.. and by then (early-mid 2008) it will be trade in time for me!!!! gotta love test driving everything around haha... Im thinking this time i might be swayed for some kinda V8, gotta love the sound!!

And i dont really need to drive a penis extension any more, surely 9 inches is long enough (hehe..).. The only thing that fustrates me now is waiting for the 350z to sell... I may be asking a lil too much for it, (46k) but it gives me room to negotiate, and i dont really want to be out of pocket too much when i but the VE SS.. Took one for a spin yesterday, i liked it.. Mind you i took the Nissan Nivara for a spin too.... LOL.. I do alot of surfing/coastal trips, so its also another car im looking at... Talk about comparing chalk and cheese!!! LOL

The refelction would have made it 18!!! haha.. to be honest, the only reason why im not too keen on a XR6T anymore is it looks like the BA XT's, but with a spoiler.. Holden at least make there models look diff from one another...
