Anyone out there think that the horn on the VE sounds dicky? Has anyone changed theirs or have any suggestions. I just want a loud sounding one that nearly pierces your ears, or the car that youre wanting to let know that youre there.:cussing:

Assume the SSV horn is the same as in the SS - mine is a huge improvement over the pi$$y one that was in my VZ SS!

I love the horn in the GTS....very Euro-Mercedes sound to it.

Agree - even the SSV sounds a bit tinny and the two horns not harmonised.
Anyone got any ideas how to improve?

It's much, much better than the Holdens of old - my Dad's VP SS had a very lame horn, and the less said about the feeble high pitched beep in my RB Gemini the better :)

Guys, would the horn sounds discussed here be the same as the one for Calais VY II?
Thank you.

Regrettably Holden seem to apply some sort of status level regulation to it's models. It's bizarre that they seem to think that the lower models don't need the same safety protection a quality horn produces. My HSV horn is the only Holden horn I have had no need to replace or supplement.
Do the other car manufacturers follow this same mad philosophy?

A mate of mine fitted a set of air horns - from a diesel locomotive, no less - to a Mitsu L300 van when we were in high school. Ah, the fun that you can have with that :) He'd honk from the next suburb and we knew that he would shortly arrive at wherever we were...

Re Hornblasters - I was thinking of just replacing the existing electric horns with a better combination (rather than air horns).
Just wondering if anyone had done so and what was a good replacement source -eg are the calais/HSV/caprice horns different models to the other versions?
Next challenge - if they are - sourcing from Holden is likely to require a mortgage - so any other sources?

I was very disappointed with the horn in the VX SS. Had a weak nasally whine that made it sound like a Hyundai with a flat battery. I ran some checks on the car and found that it had the wiring for dual horns but had only been fitted with a single and a useless single at that. My fix was to make up a couple of new brackets and put on the horns from my old FB holden, the Hi and Low note ones with the little conical trumpet on them. They sounded fantastic, old time real horn blasts were great.

Similar to the previous series, they skimped on the SV8 horn - it only got the single stocky as per exec (SV8 being exec based) - new SS is same philosophy, different name - guess they only gave it one horn?
Go to Holden, buy the other horn ($20?) as fitted to Calais etc and plug it in on the LHF loom, should be already there - one bolt and that's it. Makes a nice difference.

It's been discussed previously on the forums back in 2002 - GL JS Vectra horns are the best OEM option

The VYI Calais has a good one way better than any air horn

Just simply replace the single horn with dual horns out of a Calais/Statesman/Caprice.
All the wiring is there to accommodate the twin horns.

Check to make sure that both horns are connected, the horn at the top of the engine bay on the drivers side on my SSV wasn't connected, wire just not on the terminal, sounded piss weak with just the one down by the radiator, connected the top one and it sounds ok.

Seriously...Yes. Who uses their horn in an emergency. Ive never been in an emergency to use my horn. Horns are only used for waking up the sleeping driver in front of you at the lights, for saying goodbye, for people that cut you off so they look at you and then they can see the finger that you are giving them.:flipoff: If you see a cop car then dont use it or say that a cat ran out from the side of the road. Be creative. If its too loud then youre too old.:booty:

Um is this true or is it a law in WA. I could get fined for sounding my horn to say hi or bye to someone. Bring it on, I'll spend my day in jail for beeping a car horn. no way i;d pay the fine...what is this world coming to

Every car I've ever owned, the first mod has always been to fit a set of tripple airs.
No doubt about it, your LSx is a beast. Give it a noise maker that others can actually hear!!!

I purchased two off e bay a while back for my VY to replace its Noddy style horn.
They are German made and actualy hurt your ears if you are at the front of the vehicle. They sound the same as the European Police emergency heehaw style warning horns. But here is the kicker they are the Hi Frequency side only absolutely piercing sound.
Sold on e bay as horns and also emergency evacuation warning horns. I cant post the link as this place wont let me yet :flipoff: but here is the description
"horn very loud bosch 12v as police type pearcing sound "

there is an adjuster in the horn of most models (changes the loudness)........ small screw somewhere on the horn............
failing this , just go to a wreckers, find a nice sounding horn you like from any car (ive never known a horn not to be interchangeable)
I got me a set of these - great for the ricers at the lights - http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200316674_200316674
Oh yeah - my first and only mod
This is me with my last car - city mode and country mode - LiveLeak.com - One way to get noticed in traffic... (http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=6f7d783550)
this is the time I accidentally left country mode switched on in the city - LiveLeak.com - Guy fits a Ferry Horn to his car, Scaring the hell outta people. (http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=57c7caa817)

Awwe shit one day I must remember to give the horn a crack... Honestly, I wouldn't have a clue what it sounds like, nor the volume. Its such a rare commodity for me to use such things!!!
If ya want LOUD - go the Air Horns. Just not sure why - nor in my case where you would fit such things under the VE bonnet???
