View Full Version : How do you differentiate between WH I and WH II Statesman/Caprice??

Hello People,

I realise that a simple answer to this may simply be to check a VIN number, but I hope to gain a more practical ‘spotters’ guide. Somewhat analogous to spotting unmarked police cars with lower suspension, unwashed brake dusted wheels, no mudflaps, oh and the rather forbidding person behind the wheel in a light coloured long sleeved business shirt.

My motivation for asking, is such that I have a 2001 WH Caprice. Now, on the back is says Caprice Series II. But looking a Voodoo’s Caprice, with the chrome insert around the rear number plate, if in fact mine was a series II, I should also have chrome insert, which I do not. Hence, I am wondering if someone has simply thrown on a series II badge, or simply mine might be a low spec series II??

Does anyone know if there were any series II’s in 2001? Are there any ‘giveaways’ that can be spotted to differentiate at a glance between a WH I and II?? (Apart from the badge at the back :)).

I realise that much of this information may be found by scouring Holden manuals etc, but I felt a discussion on the matter might be warranted.

Safe driving one and all.

One of the vehicle reference guides used to tell you the differences between Series I and SII models, can't recall which one though. I had a quick look at redbook.com.au and it's not that one!

You can also check the indicator stalks - see this page here (http://www.users.on.net/~nweber/holden/wh/index.html)

Cheers

Series I dash.

Series I dash. Most obvious thing is the steering wheel.

Rear of Series I.

Rear of Series II. Notice the Caprice is now in a badge format instead of along the back.

Wheels on Series I.

Wheels on Series II.

hope it helps.

Looks like the 2001 Series II after August 2001 did not have the chrome surround.

hope this helps.

Hi Markone2, Daniel996 and LS1Grange,

Thank you all for your information and especially thank you to LS1Grange as a picture is worth a thousand words, several pictures even more, but a thankyou will have to do for now.

It appears then that I have a hybrid vehicle. It looked stock to me when I purchased it from an old couple, so perhaps a previous owner has done some mods. I have the Series 1 interor/dash, but it has the series two bootlid/gardnish/badges and the series II wheels. I have missed out on the nice chrome piece around the rear number plate though. Prior to purchase I did extensive history and accident checks and I have a full hisotry of the vehicle and have since been in contact with the orginal company director who ran his compnay from a postcode adjacent to mine (hence the reason for the tracking down).

All the paint matches with no signs of repairs etc, so all I can think of is that someone has added the series II pieces to the car.

Thanks again for all your help :)... I'm going to give Holden a buzz to see if I can source the chrome number plate bizzo :)

Safe driving.
