View Full Version : Changed your VE wheels? Info required

I am contemplating changing my VE SS 18” wheels. I have done the obligatory searching however results appear to be scattered throughout different threads within the forum. If it is OK with the moderators could any VE owners who have changed their wheels post a pic of the new wheel / tyre combination and details of the name / model / size of the rim (diameter and width) in addition to the tyres diameter and profile.
Also, if you are willing to share the knowledge the price you paid, if it was a wheel / tyre package and where you bought it from.
Hopefully with the moderators blessing, this will get the green light and all these details will be in one place for those currently contemplating swapping in addition to those down the track a bit who may want to go through the same exercise.
Mods: If you feel this is more appropriate in a different section please move it there.

Tony,
You probably know of mine already.
Rims: Incubus Paranormal 20 x 8.5" with 40 offset * cost unknown
Tyres: Maxxis MAZ-1 255/35/20 * cost $346 each fitted from Bob Jane in Perth.
* can't say about the rims because I did a swap with my 20" HSVi Supersports with Jeff from Payless tyres.
* the offset is very important. The Paranormal come with a 35 offset so they had to be machined to 40 offset. Jeff from Payless arranged that too.
At the time if I went those rims with Kumho 245/35/20 tyres from Payless Tyres they would've been $3,200 + freight.

Im getting new rims on my VE SV6 at the end of this month. The wheels have just been released, hence the long wait. They are ROH Prowler 20 x 8.5 45p with good 245/35/20 tyres. Setting me back $2890. Ill post pics once i get them. Or visit roh.com.au if your interested.
They look pretty much the same as the wheels above but without the extra black spokes between the polished ones.

Geez they are similar to mine..... looks like they don't have the black spokes in between the silver ones...Beat me to it...and the wheel nuts are visible on the ROH's.
What tyres ?

Im not entirely sure, all i can remember is n7000, i should have wrote that down. I think these will go well with my white sv6. Im contemplating getting really thin white walls as well. Only because they dont have a polished lip. What do you guys think?

I went for 20" XHP Boost from Jeff at Payless Tyres (sponsor on here). His price was between $200 and almost $600 better than I could find elsewhere (tried about 6 places) for the rims alone! Less than $350 each including nuts etc, though think he may have been having a sale at that time. Not sure of offset as apparently the 20" Boost for Commodores only come in one offset which fits fine.
I didn't need tyres as bought JKGMH's original Bridgies from him.

Sorry guys. Forgot to mention, what type of tyres you got to go with the new rims as from what I gather the profile on the VE in different to just about every other tyre apart from the OEM.
Does the lower profile make any / much difference or does it affect the vehicle at all.
Interesting to see the different styles of rims posted to date. Guess that is what makes us all individuals heh :)

Tony my tyres are just the standard 245/35/20 Bridgies Holden supply with the Supersport 20" rims. JKGMH sold them as he wanted to go wider (255 Maxxis) when he got the Paranormal rims.
I can't comment on the differences the 20" low profile tyres made as the morning I picked the car up I only drove it about 1 km to the local tyre place with the original rims on and had the new rims and tyres put on. I can say that I had the 18" rims on my VZ SS and really notice very little difference over bumps etc with these. Possibly they're a fraction harder over bumps but maybe that's my imagination because it's what I expect.........

To do a proper comparison you would have to compare the different sized rims on the same car.

Sorry, that's what I meant. I didn't drive far enough with the original 19s on to make a direct comparison to what it's like with 20s but to give Tony something to work on knowing the problems he's had in the past with his back I threw in the comparison between the 18s on the VZ and 20s on VE. As quite a few people have commented in the past I'm surprised at how well the 20s on the VE ride.

Found this on the ROH site
http://www.roh.com.au/asp/hot_shots_customer.asp
Click on Holden on the drop down bar and scroll down to about the 8th line on the right hand side.
Unless my eyes deceive me they are the Walkinshaw rims and are called 'BLACKHAWK'
If they are the same I wonder what they are worth
Apparently the Prowler, Flash, Flare and Mantis also fit the VE

Yep, I discovered that a while ago (saw them in an ROH catalogue) and mentioned it in a thread somewhere in response to something redoctober asked but at the time couldn't remember the name and back then they weren't on the ROH site.
Would certainly be interesting to compare their price to Walkinshaw's but the Walkinshaw price seemed amazingly good! From memory $3200 with Bridgestone 20s!

They are the same wheels - ROH supply Walkinshaw with these wheels.
Although I think ROH only sell them in chrome.....
I would prefer the Walkinshaw non-chrome myself:)

Strewth that would be too narrow...need to find some decent VE R8 after market wheels...any suggestions people the wheel I was looking at was at Tempe but I think the $2800 for the set is due to the narrowness...What is a set of brand new R8 rims and tyres worth to sell???

Daz, 20x8 on the rear would be sacrilege!! As you would expect given all the rim swaps he's done Tita has quoted the correct sizes.
You'd have to go at least 9.5 (275) on the rear. In another thread someone was discussing the possibility of 10 (295) on the rear I think it was and for that you apparently may need guards rolled a bit.

295 on 10" at the rear "might" squeeze in without guard rolling.
daz the size of rims and tyres explains the cheap price of $2800
20x8.5 with 255 tyres with a decent rim will be around $3500-$5000
make sure you check the rims meet aus standards as alot are coming in and not meeting the standards and crack etc...

My hunt is over
I ended up with the Walkinshaw Performance wheels they had on special. I had them organised through the QLD distributor, Power Torque. The wheels arrived in a couple of days and were fitted by the boys at my convenience.
Once again, great service from them.
They look great on the Red SS and I have received many positive comments whilst out and about. They really fill the guards out nicely and yes they come with the same factory option 20" Bridgestone’s.
Great value considering the type of rubber and the ROH rims look the goods. Originally I was a bit skeptical of the ‘bullets’ around the edges of the rims but when I saw them in the flesh I quite liked them
Thanks to WP in Melbourne and Brisbane for the service
Oh one thing I nearly forgot to mention. The tyre sticker on my VE SS did not list 20" rims as an option so my friendly Holden parts man got me the HSV sticker which covers the 20" rims.

Sorry mate I don't have a pic on my car yet but if you go to post number 13 in this thread and follow the instructions those are the wheels I ended up with. I don't think Walkinshaw have them on their web page any more as they will not allow the fitting of larger brakes which they also offer (not enough clearance) so I assume they are clearing out any stock of these hence the great prices they are doing on them. Hope that helps and clears things up for you.
Also, if you are in Brisbane last time I was at Power Torque (Walkinshaw reps up here) they had a set of these wheels on display and they are also the wheels Mark from PT has on his Calais

Just had a look tonight as I was putting back on the GTS 20's, 295 max I would hazard a guess at. But that is at my ride height with is 30 mm lower than stock.
275 & 245 Bridgie's on HSV's are a softer compound than the 245's on the SS and SSV's.
I noticed the traction issues running around this week on the SSV 245 x 19's with the 300 rwkw. :)
My mods ... full exhaust, CSVDTI, CSV tune, CSV Custom baby cam.:)

Daz if you go a different size you won't be able to move them from front to back. I went 255/35/20 all round so I could move front to back. The 255's look heaps phatter than the 245 OEM tyre. Rims are 20 x 8.5". You'll have to be careful with the offset to your brakes on aftermarket rims.
