As i understand it they were formed from members of 4RAR with some SASR guys thrown in. They are trained the same as the SASR guys. I know the SASR used to rotate everyone through the different branches so everyone could do everyone else's role. Not sure if they do this now with TAG east and west because of the 'War on terror'.

Of course of guys are among the best in the world. Up there with the Brits and Israelis, but we are the best at long range surveillance. Remember Golf war 1, hunting out the scuds, and taking control of all western Iraq a few years ago.

My understanding is that it is 4RAR out of Holsworthy, although it could be components of the SASR and 4RAR Commando combined in the film clip.

The idea behind TAG EAST (think 2000 Sydney Olympics and beyond) was to maintain a ready Tactical Assault Group capability on the eastern seaboard, to compliment state police tactical groups (as well as to do things that only the ADF can).

And undoubtedly, these groups ARE world class.

Out of curiosity, can anyone name the artist and title of the background song??? It has been keeping a few colleagues guessing for quite some time.

Cheers,

Macca

NZSAS have done the same thing, with the demands on the unit from the war on terror they have been recruiting assaulters separately for the anti-terrorist mission. Assaulters still must pass selection but are then trained solely in the assaulter role and whilst are adminitered by the SAS, they are not badged(I think).

This leaves the rest of the squadron available for the war on terror (which the have been doing a good job at - US Presidential Unit Citation as well as an SAS trooper awarded the VC the other week)

Fancy them using Nissan Patrol 4WDs!

Those vehicles wouldn't compare with a Toyota Landcruiser for robustness!!!!

For that kind of work the difference between Patrols and Landcruisers are just the same as the difference between Commodores and Falcons, Fark all.

Was rumoured a few years ago that 4 rar was taking over all counter terrorism duties and sas was going back to the long range desert patrol days.

With the amount of metal work on the exterior of the Patrols, there isn't much that they can't drive through.
The bull bars stick out about a foot or so from the actual car.

They are probably the most used patrols in the country, and now because of videos like these they are also the most easily reconisable ones too.

Do you mean because videos like this are on the net and they show what vehicles they use that it's a security risk?

I was bloody suprised when i saw the videos in the thread. But i'm sure if the powers to be didn't want them on there they wouldn't be. Footage had to come from somewhere.

I tend to agree with Buzzbug ... tis a very cool vid but I thought the whole idea of the SAS was stealth, disguise and the element of surprise???

Hard to achieve that with vids of them training and the equipment they use posted on the internet.

I only wish that was true.
Unfortunatly things have a way of making there way onto the net with out any vetting by the appropriate people.

I understand about the security concerns some people have, but remember when there was that big recurment drive for 4RAR/SASR. They had demos put on for all the media and interested people. In that demo they had all the equimpment they use on display. They also did a assult on a building for the cramers. Each time a big event is on the goverment will have these shows to show the public that we have capability if the sh!t hits the fan. When the TAG guys are in town for an event, rest assured they don't drive the patrols around town, plently of defence fleet vehicles for that.
