Hi all'
I just had a new custom stainless cat back made up it is a twin 3" from cats to diff with two x 4" round by 12" long resinators then twin 2.5" over the diff into a stainless resinator. The system I had made as my twin 3" Xforce was too loud and i wanted something abit quiter and tighter but the problem is the new system is still too loud :vpo:,do new systems like this tend to carbon up a bit and quieten down or do the tend to get louder? the exhaust shop who did the job have orderd me a larger rear resi as they give a sound gaurantee but its only "just" too loud as it is and if it quietens with time then I will keep it as is ,If they get louder with time I will have the bigger resi fitted.
sorry to be a pain in the ar$e but I want to get the exhaust note spot on.
Thanks Darryn
why are you going backwards daz and fitting 2.5" rear

From my experience i always reckon my exhausts always seem to get louder after a few 1000 kays on them.

They said it gives them more controll in being able to fine tune the sound and that as the gas's cool the 2.5" rear is capable enoungh ????
I must say the car seems to have slightly better low to mid pull ,I dont know if it just feels more responsive because its slightly quieter.Still loved the Xforce though but on my set up it was just too loud and I didn't want to butcher it and make it worth nothing.

Thats what I can remmember from the Xforce but wasn't sure if stainless was any different.

I found my Milltek ss exhaust got deeper in sound after a few K's were put on it, do other ppl think it's too loud?? perhaps you just have sensitive hearing to the sound your exhaust is resonating at.

No it is very loud ,sounds sweet but draws alot of attention.
Theres is only 2 main ways to make an exhaust quieter , restriction or volume

By volume do you mean bigger diameter pipes Terry ?

Restriction would be bigger resi's ?? how do you do it with volume ??

would volume be the area of the pipe? Ie: twin 3" compared to twin 2''?

Not sure I don't think so as i went from Xforce twin 2.5 which was too quite to Xforce twin 3" which was too loud so the extra volume seemed to dramaticly increase sound.

Still recommend the twin 2.5 cat back in mild steel from di fillipo.. i picked up alot of go in low to midrange after i had it fitted.. though it does produce the great note.. without being too harsh, and thats with the same headers and 3' cats youre running..

I think the system I have now with combination 3" and 2.5" should be spot on when the bigger resi go's on.Yours sounds great on your vid mate.

you can still use the same diameter pipe but you need a larger muffler which is why i use a 7" x 18 " rear muffler and 10" x 5" centre mufflers on twin 3" systems ,also you need a dense material inside the muffler to absorb the sound waves , the other way is to use mufflers with several expansion chambers to absorb sound waves but these are a little more restrictive

Just looking at my reciept Terry and it says flat 14" rear muffler and when I mention the day after that it is still a little loud they said a round rear muffler will be replacing the flat top and bottom shaped muffler and he said it will add 1.5" top and bottom of extra packing.

a round muffler will give you more surfice area than a flat muffler but needs to be at least 18 " long

Why ? I got a custom system with the option to take it back as many times as I like until the sound is to my liking with a 10 year gaurantee for $650 less than the Difillipo...:):):) cant go wrong mate, so far the sound and quality are great but just want it a tad quieter but it looks like the stainless will get louder with time .

After they have delt with you daz i dont think they will ever offer that people can bring it back as many times as they like to get the sound right again. You forgot to tell them your an exhaust sound conisire.:)

Just cos he gave me the same guarantee for the cam work I was getting done, he told me if I wasn't happy with his setup he would take it all out for free. I've had a number of dodgy dealings with them and a lot of bad advise... which I've told you about before.
Personally I'd rather pay the money for the tried and proven system and be done with it... no stuffing around having it modded a millions times. I think 4 times was how many times it took to get my last system right from there. :1peek:

I hear ya bro, but so far the system is very good. The Difillipo is Too quite for what I was after and the price was out of what I wanted to spend, the Xforce 2.5 was too quite then the 3" was much louder than the 2.5,so I am just trying to find a medium loudness system which I am close. The problem with off the shelf cat backs is you take the gamble that the sound is exactly what you want if it isn't you either put up with it or sell it for half what you paid and do it all over again at least the option I took if it go's back 4 times to get it right then A:I get it how I want it and B:Its at their expense to stand by their sound garantee so customer (me) can't loose.

I would still like to hear yours mate , it may be catback #4..NOT.I am 85% happy with this one it just needs to be toned down a little so my neighbours, customers etc don't complain and Mr plod doesn't pull me over again and ask why my car Idles so lumpy.I now want to blend in a little more but still have a V8 note .PERSERVERENCE is the key.

Fair enough mate... exhaust notes are such a personal thing. My old system was VERY loud at WOT... mostly probably due to the fact it had no cats. It was a nasty raspy sound too, not a sound I liked at all... but I had mates who absolutely loved the sound of it. The sound I have now is very smooth rumble at idle and normal driving which is great for me, but then very loud and aggressive at WOT.
Ahhh... we fussy bastards do make it hard for exhaust places out there - it would seem that no two peoples ideas on a "perfect note" are the same! :eyes:

its good to hear your happy with the system and quality Daz.
Mark its quite sad to see that you had a bad experience with APC.
The guys i have dealt with at APC have been nothing but good to me and have looked after me.
the only hiccup with mine was that they failed to finish it all in the one day like they promised but they got in a 6:30am the next morning and i drove out of there mid morning.
apart from that i am a happy customer.

From the past, the systems I have heard get a bit "smoother" as they carbon up, and deeper. I can't say it's any louder or softer, but different sound. Less harsh.

I thought they got louder with time as the baffles in the muffler wear out?

Yeah, I think Daz is just talking about the first month or so... as the carbon builds up.

yep - they definately get a deeper, louder note to them with age/klms. My stainless system was sometimes I thought too quiet - but now after about 20,000 klms - it is a much more "throatier" noise... glad I didnt go too loud at first!!

Thats what I thought may happen so its booked in on wednesday for a complete new system and to make it quieter ,get rid of the drone and raise one of the pipes that hang too low.

I hope its not the Xforce thats droning It had zero drone on my car,but I am sure you mean your VE as you said that had bad drone. My new one sounds good but still very loud so they are going to make an entirely new system tommorow and I have a list of minor things they can do with the new one.

my vx ss has a twin 2.5" red back system with crossover, high flow cats, and pacey extractors, no rear ressie either.
no droning, and just that mild rumble behind...WOT it wakes up and roars but its a v8 - thats what happens!!!!
it is a very crisp sound but not overly loud. ill try get a sound file for you?
imo one of the best sounding gen3s HOT/WOT :D very unique sound
