I don't live in a metro area so it tends to be a little harder to push prices down, yes I could buy one online but then you've got postage to include :)

The main thing stopping me from going out and getting a GPS unit apart from available cash is that they use whereis mapping. There have been numerous times where i have used whereis maps on the internet for directions and have had to revert to the Melways to find my way. Whereis maps don't inspire me at all. Do all GPS's in Australia use Whereis maps?
Brad.

Is it the maps themselves you don't like or the route it picks? All of them use the same maps, but each can pick a slightly different route.
You also may have the option to choose faster vs distance and main roads vs back roads etc.
So maybe take note of a Whereis route from the internet - one you don't like. Then try the same points on a GPS unit and see if the route it picks is better.
If it's the maps you don't like, there may be some no-name brands out there that use Navteq maps - but even then I'm not sure they're just rebranded Whereis maps...

yeah its really good, easy to use interface, the alternate route function is handy for finding a different way ( sometimes longer though) way of getting some where. The roadblock function works well too. As has been said battery life isnt the greatest but mostly gonna use it in the car pluged in. And for the price $333 gotta be happy

Santa got me a Garmin 510 and after all the settings were fine tuned, it works a treat - it tried to send me through a TAFE colledge as a shortcut at one stage.

I think that is correct. I have a Garmin 2610 and I tried putting POI on the memory card but the GPS wouldn't recognise them.

Purchased NavMan S80 and took it back the very next day :
Very inaccurate "keyboard"
No pre-planning of route via PC software
Limited in it's POI support and "Gimmick Icons"
Exchanged it for TomTom GO720 :
Plenty of POI support
Can operate all functions of the TomTom via PC software
Can locate Satellites from within my home (couldn't on the NavMan)
Comes with USB cradle for sitting on your desk
Bluetooth works brilliantly with my Nokia E65 including contacts list (but not SMS)
Having said that, the NavMan picked up the Speed Camera around the corner from my home, whereas the TomTom didn't. So it would appear that their preloaded Camera files are not from the same source. I have since downloaded more accurate ones.
Note : the TomTom advertises the fact that it comes with free 2008 Maps....but these are not downloadable until June 2008.
I've also purchased the Car Mounts from "kioskcommunications" (one with power cord and one without). Both work extremely well.

I am picking up a NavMan S90i on thursday. It also has a 2 mega pixel camera in it. I got it for a song and it was to good a deal to pass up. I hope mine works alright and I am not rushing back to swap it over for something else.

I used older nav mans and they kept breaking at the back where you mount them, got a TomTom One XL, cheaper - feels stronger, more features... Only issue I have is I went to upgrade maps to v7 maps and they charge like wounded bulls for them but, I bit the bullet and brought them only to find it has taken 2 weeks fro mthem to proccess my order and there is no calling them about it.
So if anyone here has the latest v705 maps for TomTom One XL, I am more then happy to buy a copy off you. PM me

I just traded in my Navman PIN300 on the Navman site for a Navman S30 for $179. It was too good a deal to pass up as the PIN300 was broken at the power connection to the unit. The new S30 is pretty basic but this works well as it is mainly for the missus and she confuses easily (lol). It has V14 maps and speed and red light cameras preloaded. For the price we are pretty happy with it but the Navman telephone support service if a DISGRACE! I had been on the waiting list with repeated "your call has progressed in the queue" for in excess of 2 hours. I rang 7 seperate times for a total of 3.5 hrs of my life that I will never get back, and still didn't get the answer I was after! I even got a message to call back during business hours of 8am to 5pm at 3pm on a Friday afternoon, so Navman your customer service :flipoff::vpo:
Sorry for the rant.....

Once you have had a Garmin or Magellan you understand the difference!.
Out of interest, does the flip up aerial on the 600 series give you any grief?
I am tossing up between the 600 or the 700 which has the aerial built in.
Might even look at the 800 series, now with voice activated input instead of punching in addresses manually.

the voice activated blue tooth is apparently a pain in the ass, due to the fact that like windows its speach recognition is 'Enlish (United-Kingdom)' so you need to have an accent to even get it to go "wtf are you trying to say"... IMHO If I where you, id skip speech recognition this time and go for the trusty manual input, atleast you know its going to get it right the first time right?

Hi,
I recently got to try out the the TomTom One XL for a week. Overall i was really impressed with it. The only thing that dissapointed me about it was the inability to connect via blue tooth with my nokia phone. It is very easy to use and provides clearly spoken and wriitten directions. I went to Brisbane for the first time and hired a car to go out to Ipswich. With the GPS it took so much stress out of finding my way around.
Having tried the One XL I decided to go out and buy the TomTom GO 720. Fantastic. It connects with my phone with ease, and being able to use the GPS to answer and make calls whilst on the road is great. I have a blue tooth earpiece and the TomTom leaves this for dead. Being able to use the TomTom as a MP3 player is also a big plus. Also if you buy a TomTom before March 31 you get free upgrade to the 2008 maps. There is the occasional issuse with the maps but this is a 'whereis' issue rather than a TomTom issue.
I got the Go 720 for $618 from the Good Guys.
Cheers Brad.
I bought a no name brand 4" GPS unit from
www.dealextreme.com
or the product page of the unit I have
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.8333
Free shipping to Australia. Comes with everything you need. The beauty of this unit is you can load on whatever GPS software and mods you like. I've got about 3 types running on it at the moment which I can switch between (Route66, I-Go and Tomtom). Might be worth checking out.

I bought a Garmin 760 for when we were over in the US and got the 2008 Aussie Maps when we got back. What I have found is that they are brilliant in the states, but seem to waver a little bit over here. Ie driving on the SE freeway out of Brisbane and it may tell me I'm on a side road at times (specially coming through where the work is for the new tunnel).
Other than that it is brilliant! We use it a heap and also loaded all the speed camera and red light camera locations in, nice feature that.
I prefer the Garmin over the Tom Tom, but that is a personal thing. The 760 works well with the integrated aerial, and the ability to put your own routes (ie store them) in is great, we used this for several long distance trips when in the US to get from a to b to c to d!

had a previous version installed.
If you didn't already do so it might be worth trying to totally uninstall all versions before connecting it up so it acts as a totally new install. There is a small chance it is trying to use an old .dll file or something.

Not from the TomTom XL I have I don't think (haven't seen it though haven't specifically looked for it) but it may be possible on the higher spec models eg. 720.
I actually bought my wife a new TomTom XL on Wednesday for her birthday and Mother's Day as I am very happy with mine and she has decided after getting lost in North Melbourne last weekend that she needs one rather than a street directory. Cost me $331.

Dude you can get them so much cheaper in the states. I was recently in Alaska and picked up my GO720 for $440US and that's from a retail store. Online I'm sure you can get them cheaper. And with the 720's so cheap the XL's would be a bargain. If your concerned that you will have to pay through the nose to get the AUS map fear not as the latest maps can be acquired here.

I had a look at the One XL today, and thought everything was excellent bar the mount, which looked and felt cheap, and was hard to detach from the unit when mounted on the windscreen.
The new one is coming out mid year, and hearsay has it that Tom Tom has designed a new mount for it.

I've gotta add my 2c here...
Where I work we sell Tomtom, garmin, vdo, and some other ones, and by far the biggest returns are the tomtoms. They are frequently cacking their software, faulty screens etc; at a very rough analysis perhaps 5-8% of them come back faulty. They also have very clunky and unintuitive OSs compared to other brands.
We hardly see any VDOs come back but that's because we hardly sell any of them... they're big and bulky and not really that powerful.
By far your best bet on the market these days is the Garmin units, especially their mid range units and above. They are very compact, look slick, have very easy to use software, the biggest screens with best viewing angle, sunlight rejection etc... they have the fastest route calculation and smoothest scrolling by far... The popular units also have SD slots, some with bluetooth, mp3 player, camera, photo viewer etc... And they're the most reliable brand I've seen.

Hi All
This is an ongoing question? But here goes anyway. What is the best brand/unit on the market at the moment? I also want to get a map of France as part of a deal. So who is putting together the best packages at the moment. I am happy to spend abvout $300-$500 on the unit plus the additional map of France on top of that. Can I be lazy and get a "shop' to set it all up for me? Happy to also consider a Western Europe map but just need to understand the differneces.
IMHO the Tom Tom One XL is the best value for money unit on the market currently.

I haven't used any others but am very happy with my XL. It sometimes doesn't use the routes I'd use knowing an area (I'd guess most or all others may have similar quirks) but whenever I've really needed it in an area I didn't know it has always got me there without any issues.
The supposed 'good' thing about TomToms is that supposedly maps are readily available for 'free' :nyuk: download from many sites. :D Haven't tried to see if it's true......

If you select 'fastest route' the software calculates according to the speed given to each road by Sensis. It may not be the route you normally drive, however according to Sensis it is the fastest route.
It doesn't mean you need to take that route. Just drive whatever way you want to do and it will adjust the route accordingly.

3 cars and CBF moving them between. One is a work car which is used to visit many many sites (100's) across all of NZ per year, so the Navman 520 gets a real workout. The TomTom is in my runabout and kept portable for trips to Aussie and the 720 is hardwired into my R8 for family outings.
Fuuny but I have acutally put them all in one car once and tried to set them the same (prefer main roads, shortest route) and got given 3 different ways to get somewhere. The TomTom took an unusual route, but may actually have been shorter!

garmin nuvi and use the bluetooth feature with my phone, works awesome.. will even read your sms to you and have your phone book in it for touch dialing.. also if you use the accommodation (and other business search's) features you can ask it to take you there and also call them.
hope the iphone will work with the nuvi's??
We have all three in our business Tom Tom 720, Navman S90 and the Garmin 760......all work well and do the job however the Garmin is by far the best unit.

i would have to say tomtom. did some mucking around on mine today and made my own car icon on the map. Of course it was a rear shot of the back of the ute, and it turned out pretty good, so i uploaded it onto tomtom under "ve ute":)

aside from buying one of the clic-on mounts for my TomTom One XL, does anyone know where I could buy a replacement OE windscreen mount?
my current mount has become loose.

Assuming it's less than a year old as I don't think the XLs have been around in Australia for that long, can't you get it replaced under warranty Goggles?

I purchased a MIO C520 and can not fault it at all. You can select different accents for the orator, and I'm finding the English lady a little horny.

Thinking about picking up a Tomtom Go 720 tomorrow, already have a Navman ICN320 and a ICN520 which no maps are available for, only an upgrade option.
Hoping the Tomtom is the way to go

I have a Tom Tom 1 and it is the easiest to use. Compare to the rubbish Mitsubishi gave us for my wife's Outlander which has nearly caused an accident on a number of occasions

there are 2 screws on the back of your window mount, if you tighten them the swivel will not be loose.
good luck

i have been researching these units and have even been into jb hifi to play with them.
im leaning towards the garmin nuvi 760 because it has plenty of features and can be used with custom maps from oziexplorer etc...
will be good for my new 4x4.
media player is also a nice feature, as well as the fm transmitter. apparently they can be had on the street sub $600 which doesnt include the $100 cashabck offer in at the moment.

I have seen them on ebay. Not all the time, but from time to time.

Mate, you will love it. The other half got me one yesterday for my birthday. Well it was early birthday present.
It's bloody wicked. Piece of piss to use and packed with features. Spoken street names, ipod connectivity, plug it into your stereo with a cable or transmit with the fm transmitter in it. Connect to your phone via bluetoof and make and take calls, send sms. you can load mp3's in it and play these out via cable or fm transmitter.
I was looking at teh tom tom 1 XL but this one is the same size with all the extra goodies. Also has auto switching between day and night mode. You can also get a remote for it.
I reckon you'll be very pleased. I've downloaded new POI which include all fast food joints around the place :)

Can't offer too much advice about the alt route function but I can say Tom Tom is much more user friendly than Navman. My father inlaws navman is a shocker to navigate through.

They both do the job, but TomTom seems to be more popular and hence there are more second hand ones available. The price is right!

I love my 760, works a treat although I don't have any oziexplorer maps on there. I have the US and Aust maps, used it when we were in the US earlier in the year.

Yep, got the Go 720 and loving it, hardest part was where to mount the critter but I finally found a spot for it, ended up using a dash mounted phone bracket.... Even got the kids to record their voices so when approaching poi's, cameras etc I hear their voice not a robot :)

I agree, the TomTom 720 is awesome.
Just wondering, with the memory card [SD card I think] that comes with the unit, can larger capacity memory cards be used and to what size? Great for music, ebooks etc which works great via the car radio via the fm transmitter.
Cheers
Brad.

GO720's don't come with a memory card as they also have 2GB of internal memory.. What I have done is load the US, Guam and AUS to the internal drive and I'm using a 4GB SD cars for music alone.

reviving a relatively old thread, but I notice that Holden now supplies the Garmin as an accessory for its Commodores:
http://www.holden.com.au/www-holden/action/ownerinfoaccessories?aid=21384&&modelid=4006&bitmask=1
wonder how many of these they will sell in comparison to the inbuilt sat nav system??

can't believe anybody would be sucked into buying one. I have a TomTom, (IMO the best Sat nav on the market due to ease of use) and it cost me in the high 300's. It sits and looks exactly like this picture. As has been discussed on this forum in relation to other parts some people will just see it and request it.

Since this thread's been re-invigorated, I'll post up how I mounted my Garmin a couple of years ago.
I hate drilling holes in my car so I didn't want a permanent mount on the dash or console and also wanted it to be easy to whip it out for security.
After much umming and aahhring I kept coming back to the cup-holders since I never use them because I have a no food/drink policy in my car, and I came up with the following Bunnings' special.
I bought a short bit of 70mm PVC pipe and a blind cap for the end of it. (The suction cap won't adhere to the blind cap by itself so you have to stick-on the mounting disc that they provide). I then cut it to length to suit the height I wanted (72mm) and, using my bench belt-sander, buffed down the outer circumference of the blind cap so that it was a snug fit inside the rim of the cup-holder (other wise it slops around a little). Final step is to cut a couple of notches in the bottom lip of the pipe so that they fit snugly over the arm of the cuppie. I originally gave it a quick coat of black satin, but since this one is Mk111 I haven't got around to it.
It works quite well, although some may find it's a bit sloppy laterally, which as good as you can get given the natural slop/flex in the cuppie. But I'm happy with it and it's worked well for almost 2 years now.
