View Full Version : What's the most daggiest car you've owned?

I've just been browsing through Ebay when I came across a type of car I used to own. Which got me thinking, I wonder if anyone can top my most daggiest car?

It was a metallic brown 1981 Toyota Corolla XX 2 door! 5 speed of course!

In 2000, when my VK SS got flogged, I needed a cheap car coz I was out of money. I bought the Rolla from my next door neighbour for $300! but hey, it beat walkin'.

The best accessory was the "TRD" sticker on the rear window, I made a space between the T and the R and inserted my own U!

It used to chirp seconds, and I used to crank up WILD Vol. 2 or 3 or what ever is was at the time.

How daggy is that? :nyuk:

1972 Mark I Ford Escort with peeling purple paint. Massive 1.3 litre.Used to cut out if I drove through a puddle, wait 20 mins for it to dry out and restart.

I still have nightmares about that car, lol.

1956 hillman minx, huge hole in fuel tank so we used to have a 5lt jerry can under the bonnet with the hose running in thru the lid...was a real head turner but hey I was 15.
The other was when I was 14, old triumph 2500 twin carb thing. Had the grandpa metal visor on the windscreen etc, pretty daggy looking after driving with all the mates and the auto dies so we had to drive about 4-5 kms home...............in reverse.

78 celica coupe which had to be started with a spark by a screwdriver....the auto was that buggared that you had to push with your feet on the ground to reverse....however it would get up to 65km/h, changing auto gear and all, without touching the accellerator - yep the bands were slipping bad on that thing.

Oxford Blue '82 XD Falcon sedan - 4.1 litres of unchained fury 6 cyl on dual fuel, complete with four wheel discs and a LSD.

I bought it for the LSD and four wheel discs because it meant i could stick a 5.8 Cleveland in it without changing rear brakes (4W disc requirement up here).

It rusted out quicker than I could save up for the engine, and I lost heart. In the end I flogged the snot out of it and it refused to die until it eventually returned to earth and a huge rust hole in the LH front subframe ended its life.

Last seen on the back of a car trailer after some passers by noticed it by the road with no plates and gathering cobwebs so they helped themselves to it :lmao:

1982 TF Gemini Panelvan.

Painted gloss black with a brush and repaired floor made of swimming pool tin.

It had it all ... unreliable, rusty, underpowered and bland. Motoring Nirvana.

Close second would be a UC Torana Sunbird or affectionately known as the Sunturkey. The starfire 4 ... if ever an engine should have been uninvented, that would be it.

First car....Skoda Estelle - actually it wasn't that bad but handling was dangerous. That was the one with the bonnet opening sideways - (actually the bonnet at the front was actually the boot - had the engine at the back).

Also owed a 76 volvo 245 wagon - realised oned day when sitting in the boot with green wellies on whilst my daughter was horse riding that I was ageing too fast.

Since then all good...Acclaim... Berlina ... SS...S/c S pak and now SS-V - a fairy tale ending.

Close second would be a UC Torana Sunbird or affectionately known as the Sunturkey. The starfire 4 ... if ever an engine should have been uninvented, that would be it.

I had a starfire in an old (vb/vc.. can't remember) commodore that I bought to get to work while I was rebuilding my Dodge pickup, the brake booster started leaking so I had that clamped off with a pair of vise grips, wasn't fancy but at least I had a pedal :eyes: swapped that for a 265 CM Valiant, the old val was good except a previous owner had cut a hole in the roof and fitted an old caravan window for a sunroof :1peek:

Beige, sheepskins on the front seats, no air con. Slow? oh yeah.

It did have a party trick of being able to hit speed bumps at 100km/h. The suspension was so bouncy you hardly felt it.

I had the floor shift auto - carpet in the xe. 225 tyres were interesting considering the lack of weight in the rear.

You've just reminded me how I fixed the water getting into the boot. I drilled holes in the spare wheel well to drain it rather than fix the problem.

1. Baby poo yellow :spew: Mazda early 70's vintage. I had to push the thing out of the driveway then push it down the street to get it started. This was in Toorak Gardens in Adelaide I would always imagine the snobs peering out behind their curtains looking down their noses at me.

2. Blue paint & pink bog also 70's Corolla 2 door thingy. Gearbox decided to die one day. It was better than walking & riding a bike which I did for 18mths after the bitch died.

Savvy.

Had a nice 308/4speed HQ ute that I'd done up years. Was a great ute.
But I got a brainstorm to start a handyman business when I moved to Newcastle in 89.
Sold the HQ and bought a friggin Toyota Lite Ace ute. Couldn't pull the hat off your head!!
Fortunatly this moment of insanity didn't last too long. Didn't start th handyman business and went back mechanicing, got rid of the lite ace and bought HQ Sandman ute with 383 chev.
Still got the Sandman and it's getting a ground up rebuild atm.

VC sounds nice. Cool car.

first post in a loooong time........ tha daggiest was also my 1st. 1969 FIAT 124 Sport AC coupe. in baby poo brown. had a forward hinged bonnet and the latch was broken. at about 95-100 kmh the bonnet would lift up about 15cm and i could watch the motor ticking over while driving, even at night (had a bonnet light!). kind of daggy, but cool at the same time:driving::weirdo:

Canary yellow HJ panelvan, black plstic bubble windows, Guns&Roses curtains, crome skull door locks, black velour (spelling) interior with matching mattress, 308, traumatic, 12 slotters with no caps, WB tail lights, HX GTS front and a shit load of rust.
It was unreliable, noisy and slow but ahhhh the memories!!!!

RAWKUS
25-07-2007, 09:19 PM
Ah.... don't knock the chrome skull gear! My HX pano had the lock knobs and the gearknob! Had a little noose hanging from the rear view also! Baaaad Aaarrrssss!
Cool car though on my P's: 253 with quaddy, 5 speed toyota box, 265 BFG on 9's rear, loud twin exhaust, decked out rear, Caprice front, GTS dash, mirrors, wheel etc etc. Not daggy, just tuff!

Sold it to get a house deposit and got behind the wheel of a 1978 Corolla wagon. Bought for $300 with 4 speed and 1.2 litre donk.
Gave it the semi rebuild and looked awesome in smurf blue and Cheviot hurricanes, General Lee style! The most expensive part was the new headlining for roadworthy....then came the stereo. Kept me going for a few years with a Hi Compression 1.3 litre and 5 speed conversion...from a donor car I bought for $150. Everyone used to comment on how hard it went and was loud to match with an exhaust made up from bits of other exhausts, but sounded terrible with the cracks and pops on overrun and clutch in. Neighbours used to love it when I left for work in the mornings.:flip2:
Finally died after the head went on it for the 3rd time. Alloy head decked to maximum and Iron block...not a good combo for reliability.

Went straight to VT Berlina.....I had stepped up in the world!

2000 Hyundai Excel.

Bought it brand new as a work car, had the engine rebuilt under warranty as it suffered from piston slap, put a set of cams in it while it was apart and used to keep up with 5 litre commodores day in day out.

Also managed to fry the tyres in 1st, 2nd & 3rd.

All in all, it wasn't a bad runabout, but I only kept it for 45,000km, was getting worried it wasn't going to handle much more of my driving.

Apart from that a Datsun 240K sedan & TC Tina.

My First Car (which I still have tucked away in Dad's Garage) was a 1965 Vauxhall Victor 101, wasnt totally daggy as i rebuilt it with my Dad from the age of about 14, but a 1600cc 4 Cylinder which was fairly torqie but slow, drum breaks which before a power booster would lock up and send you sideways, the actual car can be seen in the 100 years of GM in Australia at the top of i think page 137 (GJ227 Plates was also on that car too)

First car I could drive was an beige XC sedan. 4.1 xflow with 3 on the tree.

Only 390,000km on the clock when i bought it. Still on the original motor, not rebuilt or anything. Used to take 1L of oil every week wether it had done 10 km or 1000km of driving.

Drove the living guts out of it for about 5 years then sold it to a guy to use as a car pool vehicle to travel to and from his work. Saw it about 5 years ago, still looking as shitty as it was, but now it has 900,000km on the clock. Apparently they gave it a rebuild when the motor got to 750,000km

But it served the purpose. Still don't know what that purpose was, but it served it. LOL

Scariest car I ever owned was a series 3a LWB Landrover wagon with a red motor converstion and limited brakes. Had heaps of go but you had to pump the brake pedal 3 or 4 time to get the bugger to slow down.

I had one of those little upright Daihatsu Vans as a paddock basher, from memory it had a 3cyl 660cc engine.
After breaking the drive shaft we repaired it with huge amounts of race tape, and it actually worked!
When you pushed the button for the windscreen washer it would dribble water out of the centre air vents which came in very handy when driving around the farm during summer.

I had a mini moke 998cc powerhouse. We used to go jumping this trainline at Northcote in it.Was very light.(till we bent/broke the sub frame in the front end).It had no curtains on the side and whenever I was driveing in the rain I used to get swamped with water from cars going the other way.Brakes went on it one day and I smashed it up the ass of a camry. My mates head hit the sun visor and the little plastic clip broke and inbedded in his fore head.....We just rolled around laughing.

I once had a 180B with a Webber and extractors. I swapped a carton of sparkling ale for it with the proviso that I gave him the Webber back when I was finished with it. Heaps of fun, used to get my dad to bring home used oil from work to run it on. 2 liters per tank. I ended up giving the whole car back to the previous owner and when he rebuilt the engine it was remarkably clean in spite of all the used diesel oil it used to pump out of the exhaust..A weekly plug clean was required though.

Corona wagon with a starfire 4 I brought for a work car in Kal. Had a really loud squwark when you put your foot on the clutch like a thrust bearing fault. It was caused by the engine thrust bearings being so worn that when you hit the clutch it pushed the crank gear into the timing cover!

I removed the timing cover, recessed it to give the gear more clearance and sold it. Cheap.

With such a quality repair I am sure it is still running these days. not.

Had a 81 Celica RA40, the one with the boot (ugly!)
4 cyl manual faded light blue and in parts grey primer, but the feature was the polished scorpion rims! Used to check my fuel level with a stick. Drove it 75kays a day to work and could not kill it. Not bad for $500.00. The only car ive owned where the value nearly doubles when you fill it with premium fuel.

I seem to remember reading an article in a car mag a few years ago where they produced a list of the 5 worst cars ever produced in Australia and the Crapira was on it.

Along with the immortal datsun 120Y, the 6cyl Ford Cortinas, the Mazda MX6 and the the Leyland P76. If I've stuffed any of these up I apologise in advance.
