View Full Version : US Aircraft Carrier KittyHawk - I can see why they're scrapping it!

Along with about 1 Million other Brisvegans, I went down to check out the US Aircraft Carrier KittyHawk. The planes on the deck were pretty awesome, but the ship itself looked a bit too much like the Cherry Venture for my liking....

It still amazes me these things actually float. I have read the 'science' behind it but the sheer size of these things still makes my small brain think it should be on the bottom of the ocean.

I watched a doco on one of these carriers and still remember them bragging that if they put a VW Beetle on one of those airpowered jacks (which help launch the planes), the VW would be thrown for about 25km through the air !

I reckon there would have been a few people with busted front bars from that place. Some of those bumps were pretty savage (and deep).

I saw a dude with a VT dropped on its guts looking at the front of his car (presumably inspecting the damage).

Maybe you are thinking the massive (40 cm) guns on the USS Missouri that fires a warhead (about 1 tonne) about 25 miles (40Km)
They used to say it was the equivalent of firing a VW Beetle 25 miles!!!!!

The US Navy today announced that it has released a senior Al Quaeda

terrorist after questioning him extensively for 27 days while being

held prisoner aboard a US aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea.

In a humanitarian gesture, the terrorist was given $50 US and a

white 1962 Ford Fairlane automobile upon being released from

custody.

The attached photo shows the terrorist on his way home just after

being released by the Navy.

Far out / a 1 tonne projectile !! (that's insane)

It was the steam catapults they were talking about though.

Those catapults can fling the planes (27000kgs) to about 300kph in 2 secs !!

I've seen a show where they were doing sea trials on the (then) new Carrier Carl Vinson and they actually tested the catapults using weights. They trow things a fair distance, but nothing in the region of kilometres. (To do that it would have to launch them at more like 3000 or 4000fps).

I'll have to remember the show as it was on foxtel last week (Discovery channel maybe). They had a guy on the deck talking about the steam jacks and that a VW could be launched 16miles. They didn't say that they had actually done it though. Maybe it is all hypothetical.

(I only remember it as I live about 25ks from work (F/Valley) , I hate the usual Brisbane traffic and thought how cool it would to be launcehd to work each day!)

As impressive as they are i find it hard to believe they would fire a VW 25 km, i've seen footage of planes that have engine malfunctions as they get launched and don't have full power, and they wallow for a couple of hundred meters before they plunge into the sea, yet they have lift from aerodynamics, which a VW does not

and think about it even if the catapult had the VW at 300mph by the end of the flight deck, do you think that is enough to through a block of steel 25km? it would be no different to driving a car off a 10 odd story high cliff at 300mph (unrealistic I know haha)

also consider the physics of it. gravity effects things at speed at almost the same rate as an object that is simply dropped. that beetle would drop the 10 or so stories in a couple of seconds max, therefore if you allow an extra 50% ( a very rough guess, although if anything it would be less) it would probably hit sea level in 3 seconds or so, therefore the beetle would have to travel 25km in around 3 odd seconds. obviously I have taken a wild guess on these figures but it im sure you can imagine what would be required

perhaps they meant if the catapult fired a car that was rolling on the ground it may take 25kms for it to roll to a stop (even still i fond it hard to believe)

It would be good to see a couple of those jets aboard the ship actually sink the aircraft carrier out at sea in a display of fire power, and it would make another great diving site.

Think about a projectile from a gun. A 7.62mm round exits the muzzle at around 3000fps (2050mph) and it can only travel 4 or 5 km's (if fired on an ideal trajectory).

Actually that's a good point as a bullet is a lot more aerodynamic than a VW !

We need Mythbusters to try it !

Actually I found this old ad >
LiveLeak.com - Car Launched Off French Aircraft Carrier (http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=bfb_1181177723)

The car only goes a few hundred meters if lucky !

They sunk the USS America (which was a sister ship to the Kitty Hawk).

from
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Missouri_(BB-63)

Missouri’s main battery consisted of nine 16 inch (406 mm)/50 caliber Mark 7 naval guns, which could hurl 2,700 lb armor piercing shells some 24 miles. Her secondary battery consisted of ten 5 inch (127 mm)/38 caliber guns, which could fire at targets up to 9 miles away.

That rust is not too bad. Back in the day when i was in the pus, after being at sea for a while (Usually the day before we went in port) over the side we would go and paint over the rust spots. That ship is a little larger and probabaly take weeks over the side to touch up the rust spots.

The Nimitz went back in The Final Countdown.

I saw Kittyhawk in Perth about 8 years ago, she was supposed to be on her last cruise back then, guess they found some more countries to invade.

Yep, on the old Parramatta the rule was one coat for dust, two
coats for rust, chipping hammers were banned just prior to her

Evening,

I go back to the days of the Sydney (Nam) boat, Supply, DDG's etc.
Jason Pistols, "WIndy Hammers" were the preferred tool to remove excess paint and rust in those times. Since then, the pins that did the job apparently have been claimed to produce all sorts of evil shit we inhaled???

Just an idea, but there appears to be a shite load of current and ex Pussers on the forum.

Perhaps PM me and we may be able to organise some form of get together, AKA "Piss Up", and compare notes. Just a thought.:smilesandbanana:

Cheers,

Correct. If a car was launched off the deck, it would fly about 100m before dropping into the yoggin. Probably not even that.

I've had the pleasure of doing a deck take off and landing in a Tomcat when i was in the Navy. Awesome feeling.

Forget my comment on the VW car going 25km ! (The more I think about it the more impossible it sounds )

I think I just got mixed up with what the guy on the show said, maybe he said they could fling it that far if they first did this & that etc. (build big jump, Squashed the car down to the size of a aerodynamic rubbish bin etc etc)

Something that spun me out about the aircraft carrier is when the jets land
and those wires on the deck catch the hook to slow it down, the pilot actually hits the throttle full bore!. Reason being is that if the catch line fails to hook up correctly the pilot can take of again and not crash into the sea :werd:

Last week the discovery channel had a doco on aircraft carriers and how they are built. The upper sections seem to slot in like lego pieces. Still even before the ship hits the water it looks rusted. Some blokes go around banging out the bumps in the hull with a mallet... sorry... sledgehammer, before its painted. Only then does it look the part. Still, they are a bargain at $4.5billion dollars each.
