View Full Version : Why are some tyres noisy & some aren't?

I've read it several times here and in other forums when comparing tyres that some tyres are noisy and some aren't.

Why is that?

Is it the compound? Hard = Noisy / Soft = Quiet

Is it the width? The wider the tyre is, it more noisy?

How about the size? Or is it the design or pattern??

What sort of noise are you refering too? General road noise or screeching/squealing?

A wider tyre will have more road noise, and a harder tyre tends to screech more.

I've just put on Continental Conti Sport Contact 3 tyres on the Monaro, and they are the quietest tyres that we've run on this car.
They're are also the widest we've run on the CV8 at 245/35/19's front and 275/30/19's rear.

I guess you get what you pay for.

tread design, compound and width are the main areas that contribute to noise. For me noise rates very low on my wish list for a tyre. Its how it performs that matters.

Never heard any noise..I must be deaf but I can't tell the difference. When you're driving a V8, tyre noise is of no concern at all.

I'm more worried about my suspension coz of all the potholes in Sydney.

On my old landrover, normal 4wd tyres were normal noise, but put a set of bartreds on and they hummed far louder to the point where you couldnt hear someone yell at highway speeds. When I asked, I got this; tyre/road noise is the tyre trapping air against the road or something, the more gaps in the tread and the louder the noise.

My yoko advans A048 are very noisy. Bugger all tread and very wide tread patten so this may have more to do with it than width. They are the same width as my road tyres. They area a very soft compound but grip like hell on the track which what they are designed for. Doing 60 with them on on the road it sound like a 4x4 with muddies on.
My road tyres are S03's and are quiet as a mouse.

Yeah, what HE said? How did you get them to fit? Pics please.

It's due to the tread pattern.

SS :)

I read it comes down to tread pattern and the width of the tyre.
The compound would have an impact too IMO, how great though i don't know.

Having said that, the road condition also has a huge impact i've found.
When driving on the fairly rough tar with some blue metal thrown on top it's noisy as buggery, but drive on some smooth hotmix and the noise drops dramatically.

Tyre construction is also quite an important part of the equation.
As you should be able to tell by now, everyone says that every part of the tyre is responsible, but in a number of cases, the acoustic qualities of certain cars amplify noise as well, eg the current mazda 3 range are well known as being noisy, even with different tyres, whereas the same tyres on an astra for example would be quiet.

Rear rims are 19"x9.5" and required the guards to be rolled.
