View Full Version : Search Feature is outdated

I just read a thread about some getting flamed bigtime by a mod. The frustrating thing is, the question originally asked was a fair one, and one that took me over half an hour to find a while ago. I did a search using the words "How To Get Validated" and threads like this came up - Post your coupes here, Gday from Darwin to all, and Financial Advice. That was just a random selection from 500 threads that came up under the search . Tell me what these, or 99% of the threads that came up in that search have to do with how to become validated.
I know, it's also covered in the FAQ section, but I only just found that out myself. To be knoest, I never actually saw the FAQ section until now. Sometimes even the most obvious things are hard to see. Ever try finiding the vegemite in the pantry, only to be shown by the missus that it's right in front of you?
I just feel that the search feature is way too broad, and even though validation has been covered heaps, other searches come up with just as many and just as random results. Even when using the advanced feature. Mods, give the guy a break.

If you want to find a specific thread or answer, you can easily go to advanced search, click the drop down box that says "search entire posts" and change it to "search thread titles only". Advanced search is there to help you narrow down your answer and find the specific one you're looking for.
If you search entire posts it will just scan all threads and pick out the ones with those keywords in them.
Easily fixed. :D

I havent seen the thread in question, however you hit the nail on the head, people have to LOOK.
Try answering shitloads of PM's every day about questions that answer themselves if those involved took a bit of time to look into the issue....
People are too quick to email or pm moderators BEFORE they have looked, when they search they search the ENTIRE forum rather than the help section or the appropriate forum section.
We do our best to be helpful and try to keep in mind what is was like when we were newbies.
Spare a thought for blokes who do this voluntarily, who validate classified posts and threads every day, answer lots of (often pointless) PM's every day........and then we start checking the forum for dodgy or misplaced threads!!!!!
Food for thought eh??

Fair call, but what's not fair is being harsh to those that haven't yet got a full grasp on things...

Take note of the last post, first sentence, "Welcome to the forum dick head". Hardly a nice way for anyone, let alone a mod, to welcome someone new. Anyone else writing crap like this would have a lot to answer for.
Edit:
I don't want to make it sound like I'm concentrating this thread on the mod in question, the point of this thread is that when doing searches for some topics, a lot of random stuff can come up. It's happened to me a hell of a lot.

It's disgusting.
If the moderators don't want all the "rubbish" pm's then they should not be moderators. It's like being a school teacher and complaining about having to teach kids.
Look at how much text and links there are on the screen at once. Take a non biased view and realise that people are going to ALWAYS ask these sorts of questions.

I have to agree with HRT Strocker and Ryzz from the original post.
User CHAP5 was being an arrogant pr%$k and deserved to have his account suspended.

I only quickly looked over the thread. What I'm trying to get across is that, especially for new users or users that don't know how to use the advanced section properly, the search feature can be really random, and very painstaking. If Chap5 was acting how you said than action should have and obviously has been taken, but not in the manner that Ryzz used. Mods should be, and most of the time are, civil, unbiased and fair. I dont think his post was very civil.

Fair point... and maybe the tone was a bit harsh from a mod, but he was obviously reacting to what had been said previouslyfrom several posts by CHAP5
I do agree with you though that we should give some slack to new users and shouldn't hammer them just because the question has been raised many times before.. everyone was a new member once

Hardly a comparison unless you want to pay the moderators a teachers salary and you classify yourselves as children.
To get to the Help Section to posy you HAVE to view that forum listing before you can click on the new post button, and the most common questions and answers are there stuck to the top of the thread list. It just requires people to spend some time reading rather than being lazy and posting inane questions that have been answered many many times before.
