I know a couple of guys on this forum have a suzuki swift.
My GF loves them she thinks there the funkiest little car going around.
I was going to wait till i was off my P's and update to an SS M6 but she only has an auto licence and pretty soon we are going to need 2 cars anyway. I said she could have my VT when i update but she doesnt want it she has her heart set on a swift.
Just wondering if any of you guys have driven or own an Auto Swift? iv seen a couple of 2005 models going for $11k. is this about right?
What are they like to drive? it will be driving in between Lakes Entrance and Bairnsdale (mostly HWY) and around the 2 towns - Fuel comsuption? reliability? build quality?
ETC
I would rather see her in an astra but she loves the swift
Thanks for your comments.
Cheers

You will be impressed with the Swift.
Wife had a 2005 Swift auto & it was a fantastic car, build quality excellent & no probs at all, in fact we are buying another one this week (brand new) as a second get around car (save the SS for good weather & outings).
After looking around for a while & doing comparisons, you get what you pay for & I think the Swift is excellent buying.
$11k is pretty good buying (depending on K's of course) from what I have seen they hold their value very well.
Good luck & happy motoring.

Yep, gotta agree a good little car, built well and options for price are great. Wife has an auto 05 swift, pulls 2500rpm at 100k, average about 10 L/100k (bit less)around town in peak hour traffic. Only suggestion is cruise would be good, are bloody hard to hold on 100k/h, and cops/camera's between lakes and Bairnsdale! Bit doughy below 2500rpm, but if you want to rev it they are pretty quick. Power band starts about 2500 so is reason why hard to hold on 100.

Is there an alternative car that anyone would recomend?
She likes the new Barina (not as much as the swift) but i told her if she is gonna get a barina it will be the old euro one.
Plus i think a barina would be to small, a large small car or a medium size car would be better. What is leg room like in the swift front and back? i know in my dads subaru liberty i cant quite get the seat back far enough which can be frustrating on long trips.
She has already said she wants a black Swift with Red personalised number plates.

Swift and Barina are similar in size.

Don't forget, the swift has ABS, electric windows, aircon, leather steering wheel with radio controls, remote central locking and DUAL airbags minimum. From memory the barina didn't even come close for features, they also go like a tired snail. As to leg room, it's a bit cramped in the rear with the seat way back, but in the front it's fine because you sit so upright(high). Rear cargo space when the rear seats are folded is suprisingly large and deep.

It was only time till i saw this :P
I have an 06 Swift, although its a manual.
They are very good value for money, as someone stated the saftey features are great, and if you get the S model (i think Z in QLD) it has curtain airbags/alloys and fog lamps on top.
As for fuel, i am averaging 6.5 L/100km at the moment, and i do peak hour runs accross the outskirts of Syd every morning now. It sits great on 100km/hr, i have been on some long trips (5 hours) and its comfy and roomy and got there just as fast as anything else.
I would recommed it, i didnt look at any other small car, but value for money there is no point, the build quality is great, mind u i when i lock the doors one makes a sound now so i need ot get that fixed.
And for $11000 you are getting a good deal if its in good nick and low kms, when i was looking about a year ago i couldnt find one under 16000 and there were very few at that.
Good luck with your choices.!

I currently have my inlaws 05 Swift to use at the moment and for a small car I consider it a lil ripper of a runabout. Me isn't exactly a small person by any means and yet I've still got plenty of leg/headroom etc. Its got ABS, Airbags, A/C, Fast glass, Cruise, P/S, Slushbox trans, Stereo with Factory 6Stacker and Amp. My right foot is never ecomonical regardless of what I drive, but running between Echuca/Rochy the worse I could manage was 8L/100km (3 adults/windy day) and best was 6.2L/100km (driver only) by the instant fuel reading cruising along @110.
The Swift had a full tank/trip zero'd when I got it last Monday, today I refuelled it, fuel used 33litres/distance 490kms.
That roughly about 6.8L/100Km or 42 mpg in old terms.
Only complaints I with it are
1 - Slushbox kills performance
2 - Suspension needs firming up as it can bottom out.
3 - Front Seats are a lil hard and needs lumbar support.
4 - Dash lights don't have a dimmer
Considering I haven't had a small car to use until now, I'd have to say it's damn good car for its size. The Swift would be a good first car for a p-plater, A GF's car, second hack/flogbox or shopping trolley for the wife.
Tomorrow I loose it to the betterhalf for the day, will be interesting to hear her feedback.

My daughter has had a 2005 manual and it's a great little car - she loves it! Pity for you that it's not an auto as it's for sale at the moment - her and fiance are rationalising their cars as they have 3 between them and are trying to save for a house. Not as low as $11,000 though - that one must have a lot of kms on it or a big problem. If not, grab it as it sounds a bargain!!

I'm surprised to read that, I understood this to be an ADR requirement....

I34 - Dash lights don't have a dimmer
When you have lights turned on, trip meter reset is used to dim dash lights, push reset button with lights on till squares come up, use reset button or button on centre dash display(I can't remember which) to adjust dash lights.

Just went outside after reading your reply.
Yep you're correct.
I was looking for a seperate obvious looking dimmer control and not something built into the instruments.

Thanks guys i will definatly be thinking more seriously about it now. They do look like a cool little car i think some decent wheels would set a black one off nicely.

My missus had a Swift GTi, she bought it new in 1996, and sold it 4.5 years later with 90K on the clock. Rock Solid, well built, Reliable - everything Korean built small cars are not, was alot smaller than the current model, but was still OK. And at the end of that time we lost $3K on the car....
Got a few friends with similar stories. You do get what you pay for, they are a great car.

I reckon the swift is a great little car. It is exactly what the new mini should have been imo. I haven't driven one but I reckon they should be a pretty good package. The sport looks awesome too.

These cars are great value for the money. My wife has owned one from new since Jan this year and uses it for work mainly but is currently on her way to Queensland with the kids to visit her brother.
Informs me that the car is going well and put 30 litres in at Ballina for a 745km return which is brilliant for 3 kids and some luggage.Hers is a manual by the way.
As a second car they're definately worth considering for to and from work and leaving the lsx for play! When she eventually wants that mini(dream car)that's when i get the Swift.

We have an auto Swift in the family and it seems to do everything that's asked of it. Great on fuel, quiet ride, decent stereo and good quality interior for the money. I would definately recommend it if that's what you're after.

I've become an increasing fan of the Suzuki's - own a 79 carry van and also a 1200cc Bandit m/c.
Just wondering what the running costs are like on the new Swifts - eg service and parts.
Just had my daughters major service on the Getz - 90000k and cost just under $1k -normal service with belts changed and front pads/disc skimmed.
The service guy said the next major service was due at 120000k. He mentioned that on the V6 Hyundai engines the service bill on major services runs to around $2000k.
I cant ever remember such large bills on my Holdens - so was wondering if they get their money back on the running costs as the entry costs are often cheaper than the Australian or Europoean cars.

I bought my 18yo daughter a 2005 auto suzuki swift auto for $15,500 with 35k on the clock and she loves it. I dont think you will find an auto for 11k 2005 model. Maybe a manual. Auto's are hard to get. But still a great car and a great choice.

My wife has a mazda 2, a genki (dumb name!!!) its the one with the bodykit. Its automatic so its a bit doughy but its not to bad, it handles really well. Best thing is she has had it for a bit over 4 years and in regard to servicing, each 10k alternates between a minor/major service its about $190 for minor and $290 for a major service, best thing is its now done 136 thousand k's and we have not spent a cent on it apart from the services above that includes no brake pads or timing chain, The mazda guy told me that you dont need to change it? its metal or something!! and 1 warranty claim for a back window swich, it must have something to do with the pink number plates!!!

I have had a Suzuki Swift Sport since April and I must say it has many amazing qualities.
Looks the biz,
Great handiling and brakes,
Very good on fuel and very well put together. (all the panels match in colour and gaps and it dosnt sqeak or rattle.)
One thing it definatley needs though is cruise control, the speed just creeps up and up damn the thing just wants to cruise at 160kmh out on the highway as if its got a mind of its own.
I would recomend one to anybody wanting a very capable and FUN small car without hesitation
